COME AND PLAY HOCKEY!Clearwater and District Minor Hockey is dedicated to promoting the game of hockey for the enjoyment of all players. It is our goal to promote sportsmanship and good citizenship among the players, parents and fans.

In Minor Hockey, your child will learn much more than on ice skills. Hockey teaches children responsibility, commitment, co-operation, sportsmanship, integrity and respect for themselves and others. It is excellent exercise and helps form bonds of friendships that last a lifetime. Sports create a healthy environment for children, and promote leadership. We hope that every player will graduate from the Minor Hockey system with a love for the game and a desire to continue playing or coaching for the rest of their life.

Raft Mountain Skating Club is a local non-profit club that has been in existence since 1975, operated by volunteers. The club offers programs taught by a certified coach to all levels and ages of skaters.

The figure skating program offers opportunities for skaters of all ages in the Clearwater District and surrounding areas to develop fundamental skating skills.

There are 3 levels within the skating program: Canskate Preschool, CanSkate and StarSkate. All levels are led by an NCCP certified professional coach. CanSkate Preschool and CanSkate levels are taught in a group format. StarSkate may provide instruction in short group sessions, but is primarily offered in private or semi-private lessons. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system.

We hope that by introducing the skills of skating at a young age in a fun & positive environment, these individuals will be active and healthy and continue to advance and learn skills that will allow them to participate in skating for life whether it is figure skating, hockey or just recreational skating for fun!

Skating starts in September and runs until March. During the year, the StarSkaters will attend a test day and one or two competitions. The club presents a year end Carnival to showcase the skills all the skaters have learned.

In 1975 the Sportsplex opened, the Wells Gray Curling Club was formed and curlers took to the ice in style, their first time on artificial ice. Curling is a team sport, played by two teams of four players each on a rectangular sheet of carefully prepared ice. The teams take turns sliding polished granite stones down the ice toward a target called the “house”. The final positions of the stones or rocks determines the score for each end of play. Curling season starts in the middle of October and ends in the middle of March. Curling is a great way to get some exercise and meet old friends and make new ones.

Another exciting season of Ladies Hockey is upon us. Our ladies team is in our 12th year and we have upwards of 20 members. We are always looking for new recruits. We welcome all levels of experience. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t laced up your skates since grade school and don’t have an idea about how the game of hockey is played. We are always willing to give support and lend a helping hand. Come out and enjoy a great form of exercise as well as being part of a team, road trips, and just to have loads of fun here at home.

We skate every Sunday at 5:45pm.

Our team enters in at least one away tournament per season and tries to get away to as many more as we can. We also bring in teams throughout the season to play on our home ice.

Your brain is the most important organ in your body, and it is yours for life. Protect your most valuable asset and wear a helmet when you are participating in various sports.

How to fit your helmet: • Every helmet should be CSA approved and be easily adjustable. It should rest half an inch above the eyebrow.

• The chin strap should fit snugly under the chin; if more than one finger fits between the strap and the chin, the helmet is too loose.

It is recommended, especially for younger children, to have a face mask on your helmet. This will help prevent damage to teeth, chin and mouth, common injuries in skating.

1. Put some hop in your skate - as you make your way around the rink hop two footed over the painted lines. This practice will help develop your balance and coordination. Key skills for mastering your ice time.

2. Do you spend most of your time at the rink in the stands? Hockey/skating parents why not spend some time at the arena getting your own workout in? The stands in Meeker Arena make for a great stationary stair climber and the seats are the perfect height for triceps dips.

3. Skating is a great physical activity for all ages; bring your friends and family year round to Oceanside Place for some ice time.

Community Recreation Healthy Living ProgramActive Community = Happy Community!

Physical, mental, and social health are all positively impacted by increased physical activity regardless of our age. Youth and adults can explore physical activities that are of interest to them, be it a team sport or an individual pursuit.

Just because you are not a star athlete certainly does not mean you should leave it all together. There are a variety of activities offered in our community such as fitness classes, community drop in sports, karate, softball, hockey, skating, etc. And in case you haven’t noticed, we live in an outdoor paradise with each season offering ample fitness opportunities! Get outside with friends or family and take advantage of our local ski hill or cross country ski trails, go for a snow shoe, hike to one of the many waterfalls in Wells Gray Park, mountain bike, kayak on the river, canoe or swim in Dutch Lake. The possibilities for a healthy dose of exercise are endless!

Do you have an idea for a program or workshop you’d like to offer through the CRHL program? The District of Clearwater would love to hear about it!Where do you start?Start by developing a clear vision for the program, including a title, objectives, a brief description and requirements for your space and equipment. Once you’ve got an idea, submit the program outline along with your resume and copies of any relevant certifications to the District of Clearwater Office, or email to:[email protected]

The District of Clearwater wishes to thank the Wells Gray Community Forest and the United Way for their continued support in the Community Recreation Healthy Living Programs. Their contributions have been instrumental in the success of the programs offered to our community.

TAKE A PLAY BREAK!Are your kids getting the recommended 60 minutes a day of active play? Reaching the goal does not neces-sarily mean you need to build a schedule of organized sports. There are lots of activities and games your kids and their friends can try, many of which you yourself probably enjoyed as a child. Take a few minutes to show them how to play and have fun together.

1. They may be classics but the fun is as fresh as ever with these great group games; Red Light Green Light, Sardines, Capture the Flag, Hide & Seek, and Kick the Can.

2. Want something a little less structured? Throw a dance party, climb trees, fly a kite, go on an impromptu nature scavenger hunt, or pull out the sidewalk chalk for a hopscotch challenge.

3. Visit www.participACTION.com for lots of other great ideas and some cool printable activity charts.

Remember, you are your child’s number one health role model! If they see you being active and engaging in a healthy lifestyle, they are much more likely to do so throughout childhood and their adult life.

Farm to School Program

The Farm to School program is an initiative coordinated through the District of Clearwater’s Community Recreation, Healthy Living program. The program would not have been made possible without the support of United Way who provided $2,500 grant, North Thompson Communities Foundation – who provided $500, CSS staff Brent Buck, Jim Zednai – contributed the garden shed, Raft River School staff - Liz Shook, Raft River Elementary School PAC, CSS PAC, various other individuals and organizations including Tim Pennell who donated funds from his Electoral Director’s discretionary fund for the garden tools , YCS and a long list of teachers, students, District staff, administration and community volunteers and most notable is Sharon Neufeld who donated the garden space.

The primary goal of this initiative is to provide hands on approach for children and youth to learn and understand where food comes from, beginning with choosing the seeds for the vegetables they wish to grow, prepping the garden for planting, planting seedlings, watering, weeding and everyone’s favourite…harvesting and eating!

Often school gardens fail for the obvious reason: there is no one to look after them during the summer. Thanks to the generosity of Sharon Neufeld donating a garden plot at Forest House Wellness, her endless watering schedule, and the amazing volunteers who have been weeding throughout the summer, Clearwater’s school garden is growing very successfully! The HARVEST FEST takes place in September for all students from Grades 6 – 12 at CSS!

So whether you helped build the garden shed, donated funds or supplies, or volunteered to weed, a huge thank you goes out to all who have contributed to the amazing success story and very worthwhile community project!

Child & Babysitting Safety • XSLF 0600Babysitting is usually a teenager’s first attempt at building and running a small business. Our new Child and Babysitting Safety course comes with a magazine-format guide designed to engage and inform the aspiring babysitter. It gives teenagers everything they need to know from getting started, to dealing with parents and children, to key safety, caregiving, and first aid tips.
