Planning ahead!
With the summer quickly coming to a close, we have less than two months to finalize preparations for our annual Fun Run in October!
It made me think of how important planning ahead can be. For those of you who traveled this summer, you may be nodding your
heads as you read this.
I am sure that Mike and Elma did not plan to ride into a hail storm in South Dakota, but they certainly planned their trip and made sure
they were prepared for changes in weather! Todd and Carolyn headed off to beautiful Hawaii and found themselves watching the
road work over breakfast but still had a great time.
So, how have your plans gone and how do you handle it when weather and circumstances change? We all need to be flexible and
think through what we will need to take with us when we head out on the road. Our current weather has been really hot, so do you
have cool ties or a cool vest? Are you taking enough water with you? Have you planned stops where you can cool off?
We have had rain, are you prepared for that? Rich, Michele and Kenan got a full dose of riding in the rain and Rich found himself in
garbage bag chaps in an attempt to keep himself dry! Creative thinking there Mr. Kelley! I believe there is also a member of our group
who could tell you a very interesting story about what a sheep skin seat cover feels like after a rain!
If any of you have been following Joy Medved’s journey to Canada and back she has shared some great descriptions of rolling with the
punches. Here is a Facebook post from her journey: “After 26 years of riding, I had my first encounter with a grizzly bear. He darted
out from the right side of the two-lane road, almost right in front of me, I hit the brakes, but there wasn't enough room to stop. So, I
released the brakes and swerved sharp to the right, hoping he wouldn't slow down or reverse direction. I "bearly" cleared his butt with
the left side of my fairing. It was a "hairy" encounter. I've seen several bears over the years, but this was the first time one actually ran
out in front of me. (Funny, the last two times I did the same maneuver to avoid a crash, I still got hit. This time it worked, but only be-
cause the bear didn't slow down. I guess third time is a charm!) My sister wanted to know if I got a picture. Yeah, uh, no. And, I wasn't
about to stop!”
Thank you Joy for sharing your journey with us! Really glad you are safe and enjoying the journey! Great reminder to be prepared for
anything!
Hope you all have enjoyed your summer and are ready for some gorgeous fall riding. Here in San Diego that still means riding in the
heat for a bit and being ready for cooler evenings. Take some time and be prepared!

Another month has come and gone and our Fun Run is quickly approaching. We had a great time at the Chili
cook-off and a great turn out. I believe there were 9 competitors and a lot of great chili…granted I’m a wimp
so a couple of them were too hot for me but still good. Bonita, thank you for not burning my tongue out of
my mouth! Well, if you are on the e-mail tree then you already know that Ralph took first this year with Mary
and Ken tying for second. Ralph and Tammy decided to continue their competition where the winner gets to
dress up the non-winner for our fun run. Thing is, I get to “inspire” Ralph…look out Tammy!
This Friday many of us are heading up to CA District in Agoura Hills. We have been promised it won’t get over
100◦ so we will see. There are plenty of classes planned and a lot of fun. Coming from a safety background I
want to remind everybody we are really coming into our hot season so make sure you are prepared. Carry
plenty of water or Gatorade (none of those sugary drinks, they just make you more thirsty), have a cool vest or
wet down a sweatshirt and put it on under a light jacket. I am very susceptible to the heat and found this is a
lifesaver!
I hope all of you have enjoyed your summer. I haven’t been around but I did get to welcome my new grand-
daughter into the world. Life is good.
Keep the shiny side up and we’ll see you down the road!

Supporting Fun One Chapter at a Time
When Princess and I ascended to the role of District Directors, one of our main goals was to continue the fun
and momentum that Bill and Rene Johnson had created and for those of you that attended this year’s District Con-
vention, we thank you for your support. As much as we try to promote each chapter’s event, the Region Rally,
Wing Ding, and the District Convention, we know it is the chapter leadership and, especially, the chapter members
that determine whether each event is successful. We know that the economy has not improved as much as every-
one would liked and that the costs and time commitments to visit every event is not feasible for most people. At
the beginning of every year we hold an Officers’ Conference in Bakersfield and this year we asked the officers to
construct a riding schedule that did not interfere with other chapters’ events and, for the most part, everyone did
so. The result has been that almost all of the chapters have had near record attendance this year and as a result
are financially better off because of it. While the fiscal impact has been positive, the biggest gain has been the in-
crease in the number of miles ridden and the new friends made. These friendships have lead to many inter-
chapter get-togethers and the strengthening of the motorcycle bonds that bind all of us together.
Instead of the traditional chapter events, several chapters have opted to hold alternative fund raising events. CA2
-Q and CA2-S both held extremely successful garage sales and CA2-W is holding a “need not be present to win”
raffle with great grand prizes on September 6th. Kudos to all three chapters for thinking outside of the box and
pulling off successful fundraisers! On the 20th of this month CA1-M has their Milk Run and the following weekend
we have a double-header with CA1-Z in Temecula on Saturday and CA1-V in Victorville on Sunday. Please contin-
ue to support the upcoming chapter events so that all of the chapters will have the funds they need to operate on
next year. With all of the events still to come and the best riding weather still ahead of us, we look forward to
seeing all of you soon.
Until next month, ride well and ride often,
Vincent and Pamela Puterbaugh

The Education Corner
Chapter Educators
Mike & Elma Maury
It’s the end of August and school is back in session. Take a couple of extra seconds to check for way-
ward children and frantic “soccer moms” as you work your way thru traffic. Both parents and kids can be
highly distracted by other things going on in their lives and thus become a danger to themselves and
others. Triple checking and being hyper- vigilant can be the best thing you could do to keep yourself
safe.
Later this month, we plan to present a Rider Education Seminar that will deal with a “familiar topic” yet is
seldom presented to GWRRA Members. The topic is High Side Scenarios and the presentation includes
4 embedded videos to support the discussion of the things that can create such an accident. The major-
ity of riders have heard the following in one form or another: “Don’t lock up your rear brake in a heavy
braking or skid situation, and then release it in the hope of avoiding a crash.” However, a high side
crash can also occur without over braking.
We hope many of you will join us to explore the traps that can lead to such an accident on September
19th at Maury University at 7 PM.
Then in October, David Gardner will be presenting the Motorist Awareness Seminar for those who need
to take it in order to advance or stay current in their Rider Education Levels. Our final Rider Education
Seminar for 2014 will be Crash Scene Response held later in October. Both of these seminars will also
be held at Maury University.
Even though we will be taking a break from presenting seminars for a few months, Parking Lot Practic-
es will still be held for you to come practice your slow speed riding skills.
September Rider Education Events –
Friday, September 19 – High Side Scenarios, 7 PM, Maury University
Saturday, September 20 – Parking Lot Practice, 8322 Clairemont Mesa,
Time TBD – either 8 or 9 AM depending on weather.

We put the “FUN” in Fun Run!
Our fun run team has been working tirelessly this summer. This promises to be a fantastic event that you won’t
want to miss! Get your registrations in EARLY, so you not only get the registration and ticket discounts…but to
ensure you are on the “A” list for this event. We have a new “Celebrity Guest” just lined up for this event.
Come hang out with your chapter friends, and be a part of the “Event of the Year” for CA1F!
We are pleased to announce the “Celebrity Guest”, “Natasha Badinov”. Natasha hails originally from South Da-
kota, with her debut performance including a sold out summer tour at the famous “Wall Drug” tourist stop. In
the 1980’s, Natasha was well-known in the Dakotas for her priceless “Elvis Impersonations”. Folks were so
blown away at Natasha’s transformation into such a real-looking and sounding Elvis, that Natasha had to retreat
into seclusion on a desert island for much of the 1990’s. Natasha has updated her impersonations for the here
and now. Thanks to losing a bet, and the internet keeping Natasha and her award winning team of costumers
informed of latest trends even in her seclusion, we have the pleasure of her “Comeback Performance” at our
October 25 Fun Run! Natasha will be transformed into her most breathtaking character ever to imitate…!
Also back from retirement are Natasha’s longtime friends and costumers, the Richardson team. Ralph has a dy-
namic flair for color and character development. Crystal brings her attention to detail and her ability to stop
Natasha from throwing Diva-esque tantrums that ARE Natasha. Crystal and Ralph together share a unified vi-
sion of the “Natasha” of 2014, we are so lucky to have “The Richardson Team” as part of this magnificent trans-
formation. The Richardsons are back as a favor to Natasha, and they wish to donate their wonderful talents to
CA1F. We are truly in awe and blessed to witness such amazing talent!
How can you help, you ask? Attend our next “Fun Run” meeting which will be held at Bonita and Dick Long’s
home: 8312 Beaver Lake Drive, San Diego, Ca 91942; the meeting will be held Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:00pm. “Happy
Hour” before the meeting starts will be from 6:30pm-7:00pm. Bring a “Happy Hour” dish of appetizers or a des-
sert dish to share, while we relax and share our summer motorcycle stories!
We will go over the details in the works for the fun run, and we will be making sure all the details of this mo-
mentous event are on track and going forward. We will also reveal the name of the character that will be Nata-
sha and The Richardson Team’s greatest transformation to date. You don’t want to miss this meeting!
