Some years ago, in the Kano plains of Kenya, a well-meaning development
agency took on the task of improving water availability to a rural
community. Committees were formed, meetings were held, and the local
people were consulted. The main need the community identified was
improved delivery of water for irrigation and livestock. A plan to meet this
need was created, and the work was soon begun, exactly as the
community representatives had requested.
Yet once construction began, it was met by immediate protest from
groups of community women, who came to the site and physically blocked
workers from building diversion channels. Upon further investigation, the
agency realized that the water it was diverting for farming came from the
only source, for dozens of families, of water for cooking, drinking, and
washing. The entire project had to be scrapped.
Why? Because it had never occurred to a single member of the all-male team in charge to consult the
local women. At every stage, it was assumed that the men knew the needs, spoke for the community,
and were able to represent it. Clearly, this was far from the case. The women knew the needs of the
community, and its resources, far better – but their opinion was never sought.
We have had women in Rotary for only the last quarter of our history, and it is no coincidence that those
years have been by far our most productive. In 1995, only 1 in 20 Rotarians were women; today, that
number has risen to 1 in 5. It is progress, but it is not enough. It is only common sense that if we want to
represent our communities, we must reflect our communities, and if we want to serve our communities
fully, we must be sure that our communities are fully represented in Rotary.
Rotary’s policy on gender equality is absolutely clear. Yet nearly one-fifth of our clubs still refuse toadmit women, usually by claiming that they simply cannot find women who are qualified for
membership. I would say that any Rotarian who makes this argument, or believes it, himself lacks the
two most basic qualifications for Rotary membership: honesty and good sense.
A club that shuts out women shuts out much more than half the talent, half the ability, and half the
connections it should have. It closes out the perspectives that are essential to serving families and
communities effectively. It damages not only its own service but our entire organization, by reinforcing
the stereotypes that limit us the most. It leads our partners to take us less seriously, and it makes all of
Rotary less attractive to potential members, especially the young people who are so crucial to our
future.
To tolerate discrimination against women is to doom our organization to irrelevance. We cannotpretend that we still live in Paul Harris’ time, nor would he ever want us to. For, as he said, “The story
of Rotary will have to be written again and again.” Let us see to it that the story we write in Rotary is one
of which he would be proud.

Rotaract Club of Pointe-à-Pitre -
Community Service
At the end of this Easter vacation, which was
promising in Guadeloupe, the Rotaract Club of
Pointe-à-Pitre was pleased to welcome 13 of our
comrades from the Rotaract Club of St. Lucia for
four exceptional days. Discovery, sharing,
exchange and relaxation, the two clubs have
fully recovered during this visit.
Our Saint Lucian friends also discovered during
this visit, mutual aid, solidarity, team spirit and
good humor that we can find on the island of
beautiful waters. Saturday morning, March
26th, each Rotaractor was on point to make our
contribution in form of a community service, a
fine citizen initiative alongside of Pli bel La Ri
association aiming to restore colors to the oldbuilding of Pointe-à-Pitre.
The Rotaract Club of Pointe-à-Pitre
makes two young Guadeloupeans
discover their island!
Do you know that many young people from a
difficult social environment, do not have the
opportunity to browse and enjoy Guadeloupe
islands?
The Rotaract Club of Pointe-à-Pitre created the
Success story project to allow two young
people to discover their island and deepen
their general knowledge! Each month, for a
year, members were pleased to accompany
them during a visit or meeting on a theme of the
history of Guadeloupe! Our youth deserve thebest to succeed! Rotaract of Pointe-à-Pitre is
committed to providing them with material and
educational support through this project.

Act ‘X’perience Event
During the evening of April 9 to 10, 2016, we
organized a dancing party, in order to fund our
future actions.
It was a major action where team discipline and
fellowship was essential for the success of the
action.
After a project management training made by
the President of our sponsor club, the Rotary
Club of Lamentin, we were able to immediately
apply what we’ve learned from this session, by
managing this project methodically.
Our leadership is found on our experiences,
because we saw our strengths and weaknesses
and we could move forward together.
Rotaract Club of University of Guyana’s
Rota-Ready Race
In observance of WRW 2016, the RCUG held its
Rota-Ready Race project with goals ofincreasing the awareness of Rotaract and by
extension Rotary; create an opportunity for all
Rotaract Clubs to fellowship and demonstrate
being a G.I.F.T to the world through the
activities of the race that embodied Rotary’s
areas of service.
2 member teams raced from UG campus and
were given clues to their next check point; thereteams had an activity to complete; from reading
to a child at the National Library to purchasing
water for a homeless person. It was a fun-filled
and wonderful day and DRR Giselle participated
and learned about Guyana.

11th Charter Anniversary: Being a gift to
the Children
On January 21 2016, the Club celebrated eleven
years of hard work, fellowship and committed
service to members of the community. The
Club having being approached by a consulting
firm who brought awareness to the passing of a
single-parent in Morvant, Trinidad and her now
made orphan seven (7) children, quickly took
up the mantle to assist the children. The
children aged 5-21 required food and clothing.
The Club gathered several articles of clothing
which were given to the children and young
adults. The Club utterly enjoyed giving to those
in need for its 11th Charter Anniversary.

Rotaract Club of Mount Hope’s World
Rotaract Week
We, the Rotaract Club of Mount Hope,
celebrated WRW back in March. We
distributed two hampers to two of the pediatric
wards at the Mount Hope Hospital and we had a'Be a gift to the world' drive in which we
basically asked members of the school
population what is their gift to the world.
Another day, we gave out free cakes, cookiesand other goodies to the school population as a
Thank you towards the support the club has
received from the school population and to end
WRW we hosted a medical clinic at the
Emperor Valley Zoo with our sponsor club,
Rotary Club of San Juan. All projects were a
huge success and we recently got awarded a
Presidential Citation.

Batman vs Superman Raise Funds for
Rotaract Youth Work
The Rotaract Club of POS West premiered
block buster movie - Batman vs. Superman as a
fundraising initiative at the Digicel IMAX last
week. Over 350 patrons attended the
glamourous wine and cheese soiree whose
proceeds will go toward the club’s community
service initiatives.
Anxious patrons crowded the lobby sampling
wine and cheese, chicken rings, natural soaps
and body products while being serenaded by
Stefan Roachon the guitar. The event was a huge
success with corporate partners from HADCO,
Nestle, AMCO, Massy Distribution Ltd.,
Associated Brands Industries Ltd., and AiNaturals.
The Rotaract Club of Port-Of-Spain West is a
rotary sponsored community based group for
young men and women, ages 18 to 30 with a
focus on Community Service and Leadership
Development, Rotaract (Rotary-in Action) is a
group of young leaders dedicated to
community outreach and promoting
international understanding and peace, always
remembering ‘service before self’. Our
projects are designed to improve the quality of
life of citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
Rotaract Clubs of San Fernando’s New
Born Aid – “It takes a Village”
Another opportunity was granted to make a
difference in our community. On March 26th
2016, the Rotaract Clubs of San Fernando &
Arima executed the second part of our
community service project: New Born Aid, "It
Takes A Village”. We were able to supply
donations of baby supplies for at least six
months for the newly born baby girl. The
candid expressions that mounted the faces of
our recipients were quite rewarding, although
their situation was birthed in the face of
tragedy. Yet again we were all able to fly the
Rotaract flag high embodying Rotary’s ideal of
service above self, while simultaneously being
a gift to the world.

The Rotaract Club of Arima provides funding for the construction of security guard
booth at the Cumaca R.C. Primary School!!
On Saturday, 19th March 2016, the Rotaract Club of Arima presented the Principal of Cumaca R.C.
Primary School, Mrs. Paula Gomez, with a cheque to the value of Sixteen Thousand One Hundred
Dollars (TT$16,100.00) for the construction of the guard booth at the school compound.
The school’s history would reveal that most of its student population comes from poverty-stricken
families, making it difficult for it to raise funds for this work.
In the absence of proper facilities for hired security personnel, the school has experienced incidences
involving unauthorised personnel entering the compound, disturbing the students and teachers, and
using the already limited facilities available to the school’s students and teachers.
