Welcome to the winter edition of “District News”. We hope

you like the new size, name and layout. We are able to offer

advertising at discounted rates to local businesses and

organisations. Please contact the editor if you would like to

receive further information or email press@lewes.gov.ukAll information on collections is included in this edition on

pages 15 and 16, so please keep and refer to during the

Christmas and New Year holiday.

We have a new recycling service to offer you. Small

electrical items including broken hair dryers, irons, kettles

and toasters can now be recycled. The recycling banks are

intended for items that measure up to 30cm wide and

25cm high. The newly installed recycling sites can be

found at:

Following the trials of cardboard recycling

earlier this year when 93% of residents

involved found the system easy to use, we are

pleased to be able to extend the service across

the district during the coming months.

HAPPY to flat PACKResidents told us they are happy to flat pack

cardboard into the bag provided and leave out

with the rest of their normal recycling for the

next scheduled collection.

The following items can

be placed in the bag for

cardboard:

• All cardboard food

packaging – cereal packets,

pizza boxes, egg boxes, etc.

• Brown cardboard boxes (flat packed and

torn up to fit within the bag)

• Card from other packaging such as toys

and electrical goods

• Leaflets or junk mail made from thin card

Look out for the leaflet Cardboard Recycling

during the coming months as we will be

rolling out the new kerbside cardboard

collection service across the district in a

planned way.

With Christmas fast approaching, if

you’re organising a gathering with

family, friends or work colleagues at a local

restaurant, pub or hotel, don’t just check out

the menu, check out the food hygiene rating

as well.

It’s easy to check out the ratings by looking

them up online: www.lewes.gov.uk/foodratings

You can also look out for the distinctive

green and black stickers that businesses are

encouraged to display at their outlets to tell

their customers the rating they were given.

The rating from 0-5 is based on their hygiene

standards when a food hygiene inspection is

carried out by our Environmental Health

Officers. You can search on the type of

business (e.g. cafe, indian take away) as

well as by area.

As a result of intelligence gained and a

multi agency approach that involved

Lewes District Council, Lewes District

Neighbourhood Policing Team, VOSA,

Trading Standards and the Environment

Agency, checks on 45 vehicles were made to

make sure any metals they were carrying

were legally acquired. We also took the

opportunity to check for waste crime and

vehicle construction.

Thefts of metal are estimated to the British

economy at £770 million every year and we

know that this crime is on the increase

across the UK with Lewes district following

the trend. Copper wire/piping is currently

worth £4,000 a tonne and scrap lead is worth

about £1,000 a tonne.

We will continue static road checks with our

partners in the future.

Pubwatch schemes in Newhaven, Peacehaven, Seaford

and Lewes are now online. Pubwatch “online” provides

licensees faster and easier access to up-to-date information

that helps ensure safe and well run venues for all to enjoy;

for example information on excluded people.

The move to an online system allows us to continue to

provide support, but to deliver it in a far more streamlined

and cost effective way. Online schemes enhance information

sharing amongst licensees and in turn ensure well run

premises for the local community to enjoy.

ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOURThe regular Pubwatch schemes work in partnership with

Neighbourhood policing teams and Lewes District Council to

tackle anti-social behaviour. All the schemes across the

district are set to be linked to further enhance information

sharing among all licensees. PC Wilkes told us: “Lewes town

has a large number of licensees within a concentrated and

vibrant area. Working together they are all committed to

ensure well run venues for everyone to enjoy, free from crime

and disorder.”

Olympic excitement is

heading to Lewes after

it was announced that

Lewes is one of eight towns

and villages in the county of

East Sussex that will host

the Olympic Flame on 17

July ahead of the London

2012 Olympics.

We are working closely with

local residents, businesses

and community groups to

Olympic experience but also

the Queen’s diamond

We are confident our plans to bring

more regeneration into the district

have been greatly improved by confirmation

of its inclusion in the Coast to Capital Local

Economic Partnership.

This means the council’s regeneration plans

and work will be enhanced by already being

a partner in the South East Local Enterprise

Partnership, which became fully operational

in April 2011 and encompasses East Sussex,

Essex, Kent, Medway, Southend and Thurrock.

Capital LEP will strengthen business

relationships and enhance opportunities for

delivery on enterprise and international

trade. Inclusion will also provide a skilled

workforce, land and space for businesses to

grow, and complementary facilities at

Newhaven Port to the existing hubs at

Gatwick Airport and Shoreham.

There is already a strong history of partnership

working, especially on rural development, and

this has been evident across Sussex (East and

West) for a long time. The relationship has

been strengthened by the designation of the

South Downs National Park.

7more time to speak atplanning meetingsWe now have a new planning protocol that will give

people more opportunity to have their voice heard on

planning matters, as well as improving and helping town

and parish councils to find out more about the planning

process as they look to prepare their neighbourhood plans.

A representative of a Town and Parish Council can speak for

five minutes, and members of the public now have three

minutes. The protocol can be found at:

from strength to strength in its support

of start up businesses in Newhaven. It

provides small furnished incubator units for

start-ups, workshops, and larger units aimed

at businesses who employ up to ten people.

MODERN, eco FRIENDLYClaire Duc manages the Denton Island

Enterprise Centre and spoke to us about the

regular working relationship she has with

officers from the District Council with whom

they have a management agreement. “We are

able to maintain full occupancy because the

facilities are modern, eco friendly, with good

parking arrangements and the building is

just four years old. The terms negotiated

with local businesses are flexible allowing

them to plan ahead, which is particularly

important during times of recession. We

also work closely with Lewes Business

Development Action Group that offers

further support to local businesses.”

wanting improved facilities at Piddinghoe

Park for basketball. We suggested he get in

touch with our “Big Parks” project.

MORE people INVOLVEDThe pursuit of new basketball facilities is

going very well. The time from my email and

being at the presentation has been very

quick. I have been able to get a lot more

people involved. Thanks to Matthew Frogley

and Lee Arnold who have helped out towards

this campaign.

If I had a wish for 2012 well thecourt would be my first choice.However, I wish for basketball

to grow in popularity and get morepeople playing. I'm hoping with theOlympics coming it will encouragemore people to play the amazing game that is basketball.

INSPECTORKATYWOOLFORD,Sussex Police Katy works with local

partners, including Lewes District Council

to reduce anti social behaviour within the

district for the benefit of victims and the

wider community. She is a neighbourhood

policing Inspector and is involved in many

weekly operations every Friday and

Saturday evenings to target anti social

behaviour especially alcohol abuse, working

with young people and the youth team. She

is passionate about community safety and

making the area safer. She told us:

Southover House, one of the offices that

staff from the District Council work from,

is now solar powered.

INCOME and SAVINGSThe precise amount of electricity to be

generated will depend upon a number of

factors, including amongst

other things – the weather,

but it is estimated that the

installation should generate

approximately 26,000 Kw per

year, generating about £10,000

income and savings for the

Council.

is committed to encourage

renewable energy generation

both in our own buildings and

throughout the district. I am

very pleased to see the project

being completed, which will

be both cost effective and

environmentally friendly.”

Photovoltaic panels have now been installed

in other buildings included in our sheltered

housing schemes at Reed Court in Lewes and

St Davids Court, Peacehaven.

VOLUNTEERSWave Leisure is currently hosting 40

volunteers in various roles within the

organisation. Our volunteers are

used to support functions of the

business that directly impact our

customers and our services.

Our volunteers have a range of

reasons for wanting to volunteer

including adding work experience

to a CV, updating and refreshing

work skills for a return to paid

employment, social and

friendship development as well as

wanting to give something back to the

community. Some of our volunteers

have progressed to paid employment

within Wave Leisure and others have

moved on to University or other jobs.

We are always looking for people to

support our work within the community.
