I am convinced that

healthy ministers

contribute to

healthy churches,

and healthy

churches

contribute to

healthy ministers.

The statistics are not new, and every day they scream out to us who are involved in ministry. At a casual glance, they reflect words and numbers on a printed page, but in reality every one of them has a name, a face, and a location. America’s Dilemma: More than 20,000 ministers left the ministry last year! Many felt discouraged, hurt and alone. Most of us have read or heard some of these stats.

90% of pastors report working between 55 and

75 hours per week! 90% feel they were inadequately trained to cope

with the ministry demands! 90% said the ministry is completely different

than what they thought it would be! 94% of clergy families feel the pressures of the

pastor’s ministry! Every hour in America a church closes, never to

reopen again! Time and space do not permit us to consider all of the statistics available to us through The Fuller Institute, George Barna and Pastoral Care, Inc. However, as I read through some of these recently and thought about you, our ministers and churches of New Mexico, my heart cry was “We can’t afford this!” But what is our responsibility to respond to these things, and what can we do? One of the priorities we are committed to in New Mexico is developing Healthy Churches and Healthy Ministers! I am convinced that healthy ministers contribute to healthy churches, and healthy churches contribute to healthy ministers. It really is a partnership that we want to foster in every way possible. We are grateful for ministries like Pastoral Care that we introduced at District Council earlier this year. You will find a wealth of resources available through their website at pastoralcareinc.com. Here in our district we have kicked off two ministries specifically designed to contribute to this cause in different ways. Our recently implemented New Mexico School of Ministry (NMSOM) is an incredible resource that is designed to provide a high level of training for anyone involved in ministry. One of the goals of NMSOM is to contribute to the health and effectiveness of our ministers.

The second area of focus is Church Development Cohorts. The focus of this ministry is to partner with all of our churches as they strive to become healthy growing churches. Cohorts are about Church Development; they’re about Leadership Development; they’re about Building and Transforming Churches. Already, more than half of our New Mexico churches are involved in this process, and over the next couple of years, the goal is to have every church involved as we train more coaches to assist with the process. For more information on this, check out our New Mexico District website, and as opportunities develop, I urge you to get involved! I want to personally encourage every church and minister to take advantage of every possible option and resource to help us all to be healthy and growing! It is our joy and honor to serve you, and we pray for you daily as you serve in ministry throughout New Mexico. Let’s make a difference…until He comes!

Congratulations to Pastor Melvin and Kathy Suttle and Roswell First Assembly of

God as they celebrate the church’s 85th anniversary.

The New Mexico District School of Ministry (NMSOM) had a rousing start in September with a total of 28 students coming together at Harvest Fellowship here in Albuquerque for the first classes of our school and academic year. I am gratified by the part icipation and enthusiasm surrounding NMSOM. Our students arrived well prepared and ready to learn; our instructors have eagerly agreed to teach; and our District at large has shown great support for this new endeavor. All of our students earned high marks and demonstrated diligence at the first class sessions, and almost everyone registered again for the October classes. With our new registrants, we anticipate having about 39 students for our upcoming October courses. NMSOM students rock! I believe there are several reasons why the School of Ministry promises to be such a success. We offer quality instruction in our home state at the hands of learned senior pastors, many of whom are already known and respected by our students. We also offer the opportunity for our students to fellowship with other students around the state and establish mentorships with caring pastors. Lastly, I believe it is the school’s affordability that attracts many. Our students pay just $25 to register for each credential level (certified, licensed, and ordained) and $55 per course, in addition to textbook costs. NMSOM is truly cost-effective, quality, religious instruction.

However, we have already noticed that these nominal fees still pose a hardship for some of our students, and we are beginning a campaign to establish a NMSOM scholarship fund based on student financial need. We solicit ideas from you about potential resources for our scholarship fund. What a privilege it is for us to help potential ministers in our District answer the call of God to ministry! Please join me in this impor-tant effort to prepare ministers for service to God.

I am gratified by the

participation and

enthusiasm surrounding

NMSOM.

THIRSTY!

Women’s Conference 2010

“Come all you who thirst, Come to the waters...Seek the Lord while He may be

found. Call upon Him while He is near...For as the rain comes down, and the

snow from heaven...So shall my word be that goes forth from My mouth...it [email protected]

Thank you to everyone who attended, labored and prayed. This was the

conference that I’ve been dreaming about for several years! The Word was

central, the Worship was powerful, the altar time effective and the fellowship

sweet.

We arrived Thirsty and the Holy Spirit quenched us, not to the point of

satisfaction but rather, to the point of awakening in each of us our great need

for more of Him!
