About Agra District
Out of the 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh state, it is the most well known historical districtwith its administrative headquarters located at Agra city. For the first time the name ofthe city Agra was mentioned as Agrevana in the great epic Mahabharata. The termAgrevana a Sanskrit word which means "the border of the forest". According to thelegends the city was founded by a Sikarwar Rajput king named Raja Badal Singh , (c.1475). During his time he made a fort name Badalgarh which is situated on or near thesite of the present fort. During the period of Mughals it was called as the golden age forthe Agra city. When there was the rule of Emperor Akbar, he named the city asAkbarabad and it remained the capital of the Mughal Empire under the rule of AkbarJahangir and Shah Jahan. But in the year 1689 Shah Jahan shifted his capital toShahjahanabad. Motilal Nehru , an eminent Indian lawyer, an illustrious activist of theIndian National Movement and an important leader of the Indian National Congress wasborn on 6 May, 1861 in Agra. He also served as the President of Congress party for twotimes (1919-1920) and (1928-1929). He was the originator of India's most renownedpolitical family, The Nehru-Gandhi Family. Girish Chandra Saxena, a former governor ofJammu and Kashmir State was born at Agra city in 1928. He joined IPS in 1950 and heldmany prestigious position police department . He retired as the Director of the Researchand Analysis Wing , India's external intelligence agency.
Geographically, the district lies at 27°18'N latitude 78 °01'E longitude and 169m altitude .The district encompasses an area of 4,041 sq.km. and it is bounded by Mathura district,Mahamaya Nagar district and Etah District on the north, Dholpur district of Rajasthan onthe south, Bharatpur district of Rajasthan on the west and Firozabad district on theEast. The climate of the district is characterized as humid subtropical climate. Thesummers of the district are dry and extremely hot where as the winters are mild. Most ofits rainfall occurs during the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 341.1mm in the year of 2015-16.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 6 tehsils-Etmadpur, Agra, Kiraoli,Kheragarh, Fatehabad and Bah. Moreover , it comprises 27 towns and 929 villages Thereare 3 Lok Sabha seats and 8 Assembly constituencies in the district.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 44,18,797 (persons) out ofwhich 23,64,953 (males) and 20,53,844 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 868females for every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in thedistrict was 22.05% (persons) including 20.58% (males) and 23.79 % (females) . Themajor religion in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 88.77% and 9.31% o f the totalpopulation.
Tourism is the backbone of the economy of the district. Taj Mahal , Agra Fort andFatehpur Sikri these are the glorious heritage sites in the district which made it a prefecttourist destination. Some of its population 's livelihood is based on agriculture. Somechief agricultural crops in the district are wheat, paddy, bajra, mustard and potato. It isfamous for leather goods, carpets, handicrafts, Zari and Zardozi (embroidery work),marble and stone carving and inlay work. These all are also contributing in its economyto a notable extent. In the year 2013-2014 the gross domestic product in the districtwas Rs. 9,92,619 lakh at current price.

Agra College is one of the oldest colleges in India which was established in 1823. AgraUniversity, established on 1 July 1927 is the reputed college in the district and most ofthe colleges in the district are affiliated to it. Agra University was later renamed as "Dr.Bhim Rao Ambedkar University" by T he Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Ms. Mayawati. Asper 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 71.58% (persons), 80.62% (males)and 61.18% (females).
Taj Mahal, Agra fort and Fatehpur Sikri, all three of Agra are UNESCO Word HeritageSites which made Agra a popular tourist place. The district has also some othermarvellous centres of attraction which allure numerous traveller across the world. TheTaj Mahal, the mausoleum of Shah Jahan's beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal is the mostadmired creation in the district. It is included in the Seven Wonders of the World. AgraFort was made 1000 years before but renovated by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565.During the period of Emperor Shah Jahan, he reconstructed the red sand stone fort andmade it a beautiful palace. Fatehpur Sikri located about 35 km · from Agra was built bythe Mughal Emperor Akbarand he made it his capital. The site has many structures whichdisplays significant historical importance. I'timād-Ud-Daulah, Akbar's tomb, Jama Majid,Ram Bagh, Mariam's tomb are some other foremost creations of Mughal rulers in thedistrict.
