MissionStatement:The West Michigan District of The Wesleyan Church exists to join God in His desire for every person within our District to begin a relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ and be filled with the Holy Spirit. (Luke 19:10) It is our honor and privilege to serve a growing number of Wesleyan churches in our District in their attempt to reach out to their communities with the love and forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ. DistrictMinistriesThe top priorities of the District will reflect our unified District mission of every person coming into a relationship with Jesus Christ and our commitment to do this through serving the local church. Presently, are top three priorities are: 1.ChurchReproduction

Because Church Planting is presently one of the most effective ways in North America to introduce individuals to a relationship with Jesus Christ, we will facilitate the planting of healthy, reproducing churches among every people group within our District.

2.LeadershipDevelopmentBecause we believe healthy churches are evangelistic churches, bringing people to Jesus Christ and because we believe leadership plays a vital role in the functioning of a healthy church, we make leadership development through the training of pastors and leading laypersons a top priority of the District. The expected result of this training is that there will be an ever-increasing number of healthy, reproducing, growing churches within the West Michigan District who are winning people to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in that relationship.

3.HealthyCultureBecause we believe every organization has a culture, either by design or default, we make it a top priority of the District to introduce people to Jesus Christ and help them grow in that relationship by creating a culture whose distinctives include:

Leaders who are spiritually fully alive to God Leaders whose family lives are healthy and strong Leaders who are living a missional/evangelistic lifestyle themselves Leaders who are growing through intentional effort Leaders who are operating (a growing percentage of the time) from their greatest strengths Churches that have formed a strategy to reach their full redemptive potential Churches who are actively engaged in multiplying other churches Churches who are building a culture of diversity

GlobalMinistriesA second level priority of the district will be networking congregations and resources to plant and grow healthy, reproducing Wesleyan churches beyond the cultural and geographical boundaries of the district. StrategicPartnershipsA third level priority of the district will be working with other evangelical ministries, regardless of denomination, to plant and grow healthy churches through alliances and project that create a win for each ministry and for the advancement of God’s Kingdom.

DistrictBoundary:The West Michigan District shall comprise that part of the State of Michigan, south of a line beginning at the northwest corner of Ottawa County, thence due east, following county an township lines, to the west boundary of Genessee County, thence south to the northern line of Livingston County, thence west to the northwest corner of Livingston County, thence south along the western boarder of Livingston and Washtenaw Counties to the north boundary of Lenawee County, thence west to the northwest corner of Lenawee County, thence south to the Ohio border.

StandingRulesAnnualConference

The fiscal year of The West Michigan District of The Wesleyan Church shall begin on June 1 and end on May 31 of the following year.

DistrictBoards1. District Board of Administration shall consist of the district superintendent, the

assistant district superintendents, the district secretary, the district treasurer, and nine other duly elected members-at-large with due consideration for equal lay representation. The assistant district superintendents and the district treasurer shall be appointed by the District Board of Administration. District Board of Administration members-at-large shall be elected to serve for a two-year term.

2. District Board of Trustees shall consist of the district superintendent, the district treasurer and one additional member appointed by the District Board of Administration from among the members of the District Board of Administration.

3. Wesleyan Village, Inc. Board of Directors shall be appointed by the district board of administration in accordance with the bylaws of said corporation.

DistrictCommittees1. The Conference Action Committee.

A district conference may establish a district ConferenceAction Committee (1180:9) that shall perform the functions of a resolutions committee. It shall consist of the district superintendent, the district treasurer and from three to nine other members elected by the conference with due consideration for lay representation (cf. 1175:2). The district conference may delegate the election of the committee members to the district board of administration. The district superintendent shall be the chair or shall appoint another to serve instead, and the committee shall elect a secretary and other officers as deemed necessary.

2. The Nominating Committee Each district may have a district conference Nominating Committee consisting of the district superintendent as chair, and two or more ministers and an equal number of lay members elected by the district conference (1180:10). The elected members of the nominating committee shall not succeed themselves and may not be reelected until after a lapse of one year. The committee shall organize itself. It shall serve for one year and shall meet as called by the chair.

3. The District Building Committee shall be appointed by the District Board of Administration with due consideration for equal lay representation.

4. The District Statistical Committee shall be appointed by the District Board of Administration.

DistrictDirectorsThe following directors shall be appointed by the District Board of Administration: (1) Director of Christian Education; (2) Director of Evangelism & Church Growth; (3) Director of Leadership Development; and (4) Director of World Missions DistrictCouncilsThe Council of Ordination shall consist of the ordained ministers of both the District Board of Administration and the District Board of Ministerial Development.


DistrictRevolvingLoanFundThe West Michigan District of The Wesleyan Church shall have a Revolving Loan Fund. The Revolving Loan Fund shall be administered by the District Board of Administration or by their appointed representative.LocalChurchAssessments

1. The District Assessment (DSF) shall be reduced by 1% for every five hundred thousand ($500,000.00) dollars of assessable income up to one million five hundred thousand ($1,500,000.00) dollars.

2. The following are the guidelines for determining a local church’s annual assessment

$1,000,000 - $1,500,000 1% $5,000.00 .5% $2,500.00

3. Church plants and restart projects shall be assessed by the district according to the following scale: a. No budget for the first year. b. 25% for the second year. c. 50% for the third year. d. 75% for the fourth year. e. 100% for the year thereafter

Property

1. All local church property and district property including any bequests of property shall be held in the name of The West Michigan District of The Wesleyan Church, Inc. in trust for The Wesleyan Church in accordance with The Discipline (para. 4610).

2. All local church property and district property shall be insured in accordance with the current district policy.

OperatingPolicies

The District Board of Administration shall review the operating policies and a compilation of all current operating policies shall be published on an annual basis.

OrdinationCandidates…Rev. Andrea Abrahamson

Andrea is working to plant Transformation Church in Lansing, MI. Although she is originally from Grand Rapids, MI, she and her dog, Monty, packed up and moved to Lansing in the fall of 2017 to embark upon this new ministry assignment. The new congregation will launch publicly in September 2018. Prior to accepting the call to church planting, Andrea has served with various ministries in Michigan, Kentucky, and Alabama. This includes the areas of worship, creative arts, college ministry, and discipleship. However, she could not escape the reality that there are so many people who have yet to come into a life-changing relationship with Jesus and that church planting is the most effective way to reach them. She has a passion to develop emerging leaders and seeing others discover their God-given potential. Andrea holds an MDiv with a specialization in Church Planting from Asbury Theological Seminary and an MBA from Cornerstone University. Andrea is engaged to be married to Austin Shaull shortly after the church launches.

Rev. Gabrielle Engle Gabrielle Marie Engle is currently the Connections Pastor at Overflow Church and continues to grow as a sought after itinerant preacher. She is a graduate from Indiana Wesleyan where she most recently earned a Masters of Practical Theology after earning two undergraduate degrees in Biblical Literature and Christian Ministries. Gabrielle desires to equip people to live in the freedom and truth that the Gospel offers. Her heart beats for justice and desires to tangibly live out the Gospel in the here and now. This looks like being actively involved in her

community, being a good neighbor, and listening to those who are often unheard. The greatest gift Gabrielle offers to the local church is not her numerous accomplishments, rather her intimacy with God. In fifty years she desires to be known as a faithful servant and humble leader who pointed to Jesus every step of the way.

Rev. Joel Gorveatte Joel is a graduate of Kingswood University. He is happy to return to Grand Rapids, Michigan, after living in Eastern Canada for six years. In 2016, Joel joined the pastoral staff at Journey Church in Caledonia and is grateful to be a part of what Jesus is doing in the greater Grand Rapids area. He is passionate about the local church and seeing people become fully alive in Jesus. He is newly married to Christie, and they are very excited to begin the adventure of life and loving others together.


Rev. Jeremy Hatley Jeremy serves as the Lead Chaplain and Advance Care Planning Coordinator for Trinity Regional Medical Center and the entire Fort Dodge region of UnityPoint Health in Iowa. He is originally from Amarillo, Texas, and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts from Texas Tech University as well as a Master of Divinity from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Sarah, have been married since July 2012, and they currently have no children but they do have a small and feisty Minature schnauzer mix named Topsy. Jeremy and Sarah have almost completed the process of becoming licensed foster parents in the state of Iowa, and they look forward to welcoming children with special needs into their home in the near future. In their free time, Jeremy and

Sarah both enjoy reading, playing board games, watching movies, and traveling either by car or cruise ship. They feel very blessed and grateful to be members of Frontline Community Church in Grand Rapids and are also very involved at Prairie Lakes Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Rev. Joel Leipprandt Joel has been serving in the West Michigan District as a lead pastor for six years. He first came into the WMD tribe because he LOVED the passion he saw for church planting. Although he is a part of the Greenhouse Church Planting Network (shoutout), he loves how the district’s passion for reaching people continues to increase. This is the same kind of thing he has dreamed of and committed himself to be a part of. The MDiv and ordination process has been a crazy journey. Did somebody say grueling? Joel wants to say “thank you” to everyone in Greenhouse and the WMD who supported him, encouraged him, challenged him, and kept him going when he wanted to throw in the towel. Most of all, he wants to thank his wife, Kelly, for being his rock. Kelly, thank you for who you are and how you are. I love you so much, and I love this journey God has called us into. Rev. James grew up in the beautiful landscape of Northern Michigan where maple and pine is king, rivers and lakes are everywhere, and recreation was the only thing there was to do. He attended church his entire childhood and fell in love with Jesus right away. He attended Spring Arbor University where he fell for a beautiful girl named Jessica, who quickly became his best friend and eventually his wife. James felt a call to ministry early and decided a life of ministry was the life for him. He earned his BA with honors and served the local church as a youth, senior, and now kids’ and family pastor. He has five perfect kiddos ages 1-9 who always keep him on his toes. He loves his life,

family, and the occasional Starbucks and Star Wars flick.

Rev. Steve Spitters

The best part of Steve’s life after knowing Jesus as his Lord and Savior is definitely the fact that when he asked Lisa to marry him she said, “Yes!” She is his compliment and confidante – planned when he is too spontaneous, compassionate when he has had enough, creative when he is stuck, and practical when he is out in left field. He loves the wisdom of God in bringing them together. Steve and Lisa have shared the journey of marriage and student ministry in the Holland community for seventeen years. Together they are parents to four children: Ellie (15), Anna (15), Kenzie (13), and Kaden (10). Steve and Lisa are intentional about creating laughter, building memories, and experiencing God as a family. One highlight has been baptizing Ellie, Anna, and Kenzie in recent years, and they thank God that they continue to live public lives for Jesus! Steve has a passion for students and a bigger passion to see them encounter the Living God who is in the business of redeeming and transforming lives. A summer as a camp counselor impacted Steve so much that he switched from studying architectural engineering and ended with a Bachelor’s in Religion (Youth Ministry) from Hope College. He served as the middle school pastor at Central Wesleyan Church in Holland, Michigan, for six years prior to stepping into the role of Student Pastor. When Steve is not involved with ministry, he enjoys getting out in nature. Mountain biking is his preferred way to do this. Basketball is also a love of his. It is good that those two things are active because he also loves to eat chocolate. His mother-in-law says he eats more chocolate than any woman she has ever met…Steve thinks that is a compliment!

Rev.ChaseStancle Chase loves the Lord. He is a loving husband and father of four. He has served in ministry leadership for 16 years in the greater Grand Rapids area. He currently serves as the Lead Pastor of Unison Christian Church. He is deeply dedicated to ministry in the urban community that sparks and encourages partnership of many different entities, believing that God is honored and the community as a whole is better when we do life together. Mrs.RenataEllisRenata is a grateful believer in Jesus Christ. She serves as the Kids Hope Director at her church which partners through Jefferson School to amplify the hope and life of Jesus through matching church members with students for weekly mentoring. Her husband, Rev. James Ellis III, works at Hope College as a Chaplain of Discipleship. They have been blessed to live and minister in six different states over eleven years of marriage.

Rev.JerryDeRuiterJerry was the youngest person to be elected to the Kent County Board of Commissioners. He was twenty-three years old at the time and served for eight years. In 1981, he was elected Mayor of the City of Kentwood. He served the city for eleven years. Jerry also served as the Executive Pastor at Kentwood Community Church. Jerry is retired from Hope Network and currently serves as a chaplain for the Kentwood Police Department.

WesleyanVillageIncorporated Wesleyan Village Incorporated May 31, 2018 The Wesleyan Village Incorporation was formed in 1959 as a subsidiary corporation of the West Michigan District of The Wesleyan Church. The purpose of this corporation was to assist pastors with retirement needs and to give them incentive for long‐term service in the W. MI District. Because of the merger, however, this benefit is in process of being shut down. As of this year’s report no new participates will be added, future service credits will be adjusted for inflation rather than being a factor of overall earnings and a plan is being formed that will payoff earned service credits.
