Message from District Governor Alan Guy
The Soap-Box
Greetings Fellow Lions and Lioness
I have just returned from the 2016 USA/CANADA Forum held this year in Omaha, Nebraska. Quite a journey to get there, but well worth it.
This is a fairly large event, with some 1,800 registrants. It was very well organized, with several excellent speakers, a wide vari-ety of workshops and panels, and an adequate amount of time to just mingle, chat, compare notes, and find out what other Lions are doing around North America. The event is open to all Lions, and there were significant numbers of first-timers present. Good to see.
The 2017 Forum will take place in Portland, Oregon, which of course is much closer for MD 19, especially District I, and then in 2019, it will be held in our own Multiple District, at Spokane, WA. With these two reasonably close venues for two of the next three Forums, I encourage Lions of every Zone and Club to give some serious thought about attending at least one of them.
Of course, Spokane will be greeting lots of Lions this month
as it plays host to the MD 19 Annual Convention on October 20-22.
There is a little time left to register, if you have not already done so. The Lions away out there in District E will be working very hard to make this event a great success. Again, first-time attendees will be warmly welcomed, and recognized.

Enjoy a 9 COURSE CHINESE BANQUET including a wonderful presentation by Nanaimo author
Diane Bestwick.Diane will share her 8 years experiences in China that helped
inspire her novel “and a bird sang”, a novel, reflecting the realities during the early enforcement period

challenge of women who must decide between subservient obedience or honouring their inner voices.
Diane Bestwick is an advocate for the equality of women and plays a supportive role to several foster homes in China including her commitment to Swallows Nest.

Spring Ahead
Membership Drive
What Is It?The Spring Ahead Membership Drive is a 2017 project that will ask each Lions Club in MD19 to hold a membership event during the week prior to the start of Daylight Savings Time (Sunday, March 12, 2017).
Why should my club participate?Almost all Lions Clubs will benefit from new members. More members equal more service. New members bring new energy, new talents, and new ideas. Also, participating Clubs have the opportunity to win some great prizes. We will send more prize information in the coming months.
So what do we do next?• Plan a membership event for any day during March 5–11, 2017. You can plan an open house, contact potential members at a community event, or walk your local businesses with membership applications.
• Send an email to MD19 Public Relations Chairperson Kathy Crawford at [email protected] to let us know that you are going to participate. We will share the names of Clubs that plan to participate.
The MD19 Membership Manual includes a complete Open House manual. This is a proven method for holding an open house. We encourage you to follow the manual and avoid taking short cuts. Here’s a link to the manual:http://www.lionsmd19.com/manuals/2016%20Membership%20and%20Open%20House%20manual.pdf
The link here takes you to a LCI website page where you will find a lot of ideas and resources for gaining new members: http://members.lionsclubs.org/EN/lions/invite-members/index.php

AM-FM REPORT
A Minute for MembershipBy Lion Burnie Smith,
District 19-I Membership Retention Chair
As your District Membership/Retention Chair this year, I will try to give some brief actionable ideas. I am always open to ideas and comments on my thoughts as most of the ideas I am not using myself and this will motivate me to improve too.
How many of you wear articles of clothing on a regular basis that have the names or logos of the manufacturer on them?
Why not wear an article with the Lions logo on it as you go about your daily activities? Let people see and know that you belong to this great organization.
Note that I am not talking about wearing vests of special activity clothing for Lions projects, but every-day clothing such as T-shirts, golf shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, or jackets.
EYEGLASS COLLECTION
By Lion R.E.(Bob) Scales
The Comox Valley Lions Club have established a large route of used eyeglass collections in the Comox Valley. Every few months we gather these up for sorting and packing for shipment to the Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre http://clerc.ca/ in Calgary, Alberta.
In the above picture our September work party saw us box up 2,463 pair of used eyeglasses.
CLERC has distributed over three Million pair of used eye-glasses to needy area around the world and the Comox Valley Lions Club is proud to participate in this service.ALBERNI VALLEY
Lions ClubBy Lion Ron Metcalfe
September 2016 was a busy month for the Alberni Valley Lions Club. The Club engaged in nine activities and contributed 288 hours of volunteer time. Some of our activities are shown below and full details are shown in our website and the current edition of the “Alberni Valley Lion” newsletter.
The 2016 Bullhead
DerbyOn Sunday,
September 4, 2016, 14 Lions gathered at Clutesi Haven Marina for the annual Children’s Bullhead Derby, organized by Lion Art Halsall.
Good weather resulted in about 270 entrants. Local dignitaries, Mayor Mike Ruttan and MLA Scott Fraser,
assisted us with measuring the bullheads and making presentations. This year’s winner was Nathalie Taberner with a 245 mm.
bullhead. Second place was taken by Sofia Harris with a bullhead measuring 214 mm. Both winners were presented with dedicated and “keeper” trophies. About 70 prizes were also distributed to randomly selected entrants.
Much to the delight of children and adults alike, the “Dancing Lion” made an appearance at the 2016 edition of the Bullhead Derby. The Lion circulated through the crowd, demonstrating some of his finer dance moves and partnered with members of the assembled masses.
In 2017, the event will be moved to Harbour Quay.
The Alberni Valley Lions Start a New Website
The Alberni Valley Lions Club developed a new website – http://www.avlions.ca (or simply avlions.ca). Our main objective was to provide an easy address to remember, allow a little more flexibility and permit easy navigation of the site.
All items in the e-clubhouse site have been retained and have been presented in a manner similar to that already in place. The menu has been reorganized to fit the new format. The new website, together with the e-clubhouse site will be updated until the end of November, after which we will migrate to the new site. When you have a little time, check us out!
The Alberni Valley Lions Club would like to thank Noel Villeneuve of Hookflash Solutions Inc. for his sponsorship of and assistance with our new website.

September launches the year for us – starting with us helping the Kidney Walk raise over $11,000 this year. We provided tables and chairs and tents and lots of volunteer Lions to help make it happen. We’ve also started the Saturday meat raffles again at the Riptide Pub. We hope to raise at least as much as last year – $3,400! Almost all the tables are already sold for our November Craft Fair!
Lion Tom McKenzie is a Charter Member of our Club, and he has been made into a Life Member to mark his stepping down from the Presidency. Congrats to Tom and his new hip for completing the Kidney Walk! Lion Tom McKenzie

SORTING THOUSANDS OF BOTTLES and CANS and such on Sunday, September 18th
As we had to put only a certain number in each bag we were constantly counting so had no time for chatting but we still had fun! Four of the Sooke Lions joined in,
handling the heavier glass bottles.Organization of our time was handled by Lions Jane and Al Beddows.
Waiting to be sorted next Tuesday. We ran out of bags on Sunday!
Bagged and ready for pickup
by Alpine.Sooke Lions handling the glass.
The Sooke Harbourside Lions had been asked by the Police to assist with a bottle drive that was raising funds for the Tour de Rock riders. Money raised
goes to sending children with cancer to Camp Good Times.
The help we gave was to sort and bag the bottles & cans already collected.
We made a substantial dent in the pile!

To All Canadian Lions Clubs:
Re: 8th Annual Lions/CDA
NATIONAL TAG DAY We are writing this letter to each Lions Club across Canada to invite you to participate in this year’s Annual National Tag Day in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association.
It’s our goal to see every Lions Club in Canada participate in this event either through taking part in an awareness fund raising event or by making a Club donation to Tag Days that happens this year on November 12. The Annual World Diabetes Day is every November 14th. If you have participated in this event in the past, we thank you and hope you will again set up a site in your commu-nity. If your Club has not participated in Tag Day, please consider being part of this important and impactful event that takes place annually across Canada. This one-day event takes about 5 to 8 hours and is held in a high traffic area within your community.
Each Club is provided “Tag Day” stickers and posters.
We would like to encourage your Club to put on your Lions vests and show our communities that you support the Cana-dian Diabetes Association. All funds collected on this day will be used to support services and activities within your community through your local Canadian Diabetes Association offices.
The remittance cheque should be made out to the Canadian Diabetes Association and mailed to your National Lions Liaison who will, in turn, deliver it to the Canadian Diabetes Association. The Committee hopes that your Club will participate in this year’s event to help reach our goal of 100% participation across Canada.
If you have any questions or would like to receive supplies for the event, please contact me.
Yours in Lionism,Georgia Medwedrich, PDG

It is also an awareness project.
Not withstanding, Lions will still go to the schools to give handouts and deliver the
Diabetes Awareness message for the students.
The collection cans will still stay in all of the businesses for now,
but that may change in the future.
As Diabetes is an LCI Initiative, the service hours for this count.
This project would be ideal for “new” Lions as they would only need to put in a two hour shift.
The people who sign up to help at the November 12 Tag Day
would take a shift in a high traffic area.
Two people at each table per shift.
A 5 hour shift with 6 people per table, total of 12 people.
We give out Tag Day stickers
to anyone who donates to the cause.

LADYSMITH Lions Club
By Lion Jim Masyk
To highlight the 75th Anniversary of the Ladysmith Lions Club, the town of Ladysmith proclaimed the week of September 18-24 as “Lions Week”.
A project that the Club has been involved in over the past 5 years was to re-establish the “Ginkgo Grove” in the community arboretum destroyed during highway improvements. In 2011 PIP Wing-Kun Tam initiated an international project to plant one million trees. Our Club received two fir seedlings that were nurtured by town staff for 5 years and were planted in the arbore-tum and dedicated on September 22, 2016.
Ladysmith Mayor Mr. Aaaron Stone and Lions Club President Stoney Stonehouse did the honours.

CRESCENT BAYLions Club
By Mary Lou Waitz, Secretary
The Crescent Bay Lions Club has started their $7 Sunday breakfasts with new cooking teams as of September 18, 2016. The first two Sundays have been steady with customers, but we are hoping for more on Sundays to come.
At the August 24, 2016 meeting, we were honoured to have Zone Chairman, Maureen Winn as a guest. She presented President John Kent with a pin representing Clallam Bay Sekiu Lions Club and Secretary Mary Lou Waitz a Lion cookie cutter in hopes Lion cookies would be included in her next visit. Zone Chairman Maureen reminded the group a Zone meeting will be October 1 at Quilcene at the Timberhouse Restaurant at 12:00 p.m.
The District Governor, Alan J. Guy from Mayne Island, BC will visit Oc-tober 12 at our Pot Luck gathering. President John Kent presented the mem-bers with Certificates of Appreciation, but surprised Treasurer Rick Hartley with a beautiful plaque for outstanding Club leadership and dedicated service as Treasurer.
September 7, 2016, President John Kent, Vice-President Ray DiVacky, and Secretary Mary Lou Waitz at-tended the Port Angeles Lions Club meeting. Lion Maureen
