The present paper is a database of taxonomic account of aquatici id tifi d f th h bit t f Chikk Bidi l k fangiosperms identified from the habitat of Chikka Bidiru lake of

Bannerghatta, Begihalli village, Bangalore district, Karnatakastate which is about 2‐3 km travel enroute the Sarala BirlaAcademy on Bannerghata‐Jigani road The study was undertakenAcademy on Bannerghata‐Jigani road. The study was undertakento make a regular seasonal survey of the distribution of aquaticangiosperms and to assess any change in their availability.

METHODOLOGYThe Chikka Bidiru lake was surveyed twice a year, viz., April – June and November – January from 2004 ‐2008.  The plants were collected in two parts of which one set The plants were collected in two parts of which one set was utilised for the preparation of herbarium and the other was used to grow in artificial conditions.  For the ggrowth of plants, large plastic tubs were used and even the soil samples were collected from the area of study t  f ilit t       d t ti   d t    b tt  to facilitate an easy adaptation and to ensure better survival.

The literature survey of various floras does not provide any record of plants from Chikka Bidiru lake.  Rather it provides a database of various lakes and other water provides a database of various lakes and other water bodies in and around Bannerghatta of Bangalore district.  The study reveals an occurrence of 27 yfamilies and 62 species of plants which include aquatic  angiosperms ( submerged, floating and

CONCLUSION

Chikka Bidiru lake reveals a drastic fall in the number ofspecies mainly due to human interference like the sandmining and the preparation of bricks.

Many of the aquatic angiosperms seems to have disappearedfrom this lake which were unique to this lake and hadexisted in this habitat for long.g

The sturdy plants have survived even after this onslaught.

The lake which was once used by children to beat the heat ofThe lake which was once used by children to beat the heat ofthe summer has now turned into a dangerous zone for swimmers.

Strong remedial measures have to be taken up by the concerned authorities to maintain this lake and

prevent it from becoming another lake that exists only i hiin history.
