President’s Corner It’s an amazing world out there.

According to a recent article published by Smithsonian Magazine, the European Space

Agency has launched a very special astronomical space camera, named Gaia, that is explor-

ing our own Milky Way. Apparently, it is the most powerful and advanced camera ever

launched. It is so powerful, it can distinguish a coin on the surface of the moon. Among

other things, it has shown that there are over a billion stars in our own galaxy.

Just like people. There are a staggering number of people liv-

ing on earth as we speak. And the number increases every day.

In many of your lifetimes, you have seen the population of the

United States increase from 200 million to over 300 million.

And everyone of those individuals has a story to tell. And

many have problems. Some severe problems. Problems that

you would not wish on your worst enemy.

There are no doubt many compassionate people and countries

around the world. But we live in the very best, hands down.

There may be as many charities and social services as there are

stars. And that does not include the countless churches in every

town and community in the US.

And hopefully every one of them is using their resources for the betterment of their commu-

nities. No doubt most of their causes are worthy and deserve your support. One big prob-

lem, you cannot support them all. You have to be selective. Your own resources only go so

far.

Which brings us to one of our own local charities that need help. Hope Women’s Resource

Center. This will be the third year that we will participate in the Mother’s Day Baby Show-

er Drive.

Kiwanis will set up outside Super 1 stores at 28th and Hazel and the store on Dollarway

Road on Saturday May 12th from 9:00 Am to 3:00 PM. We will hand out fliers suggesting

that shoppers purchase baby items that new mothers need for their babies.

This event is not for you to donate money, but for you to encourage others to make a contri-

bution. It is an opportunity for you to earn service hours. Lucinda Lawson is in overall

charge of the event. Stewart Marshall has agreed to be responsible for the Dollarway Store,

and Lucinda will take care of the 28th and Hazel store.

We will be joined by individuals from Hope Women’s Resource Center, and perhaps some

Key Club members. Plan on giving an hour or so for this very worthy cause. And if you

want to buy a package of dippers, that’s OK.

Your Kiwanis Club will be working at the Business Expo on Thursday May 3. Let me

know if you want to participate. We will be manning a booth, promoting Kiwanis, and try-

ing to recruit new members. Another opportunity to earn service hours.

Hope to see you at both of these events.

happy to serve Jefferson County.

We look forward to helping again with the

summer.

WISDOM:

An old station hand named Billy was overseeing his herd in a remote pasture in the outback when

suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust.

The driver, a young man in a Brioni® suit, Gucci® shoes, RayBan® sunglasses and YSL® tie,

leaned out the window and asked the old man, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves

you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?"

Billy looks at the young man, who obviously is a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing

herd and calmly answers, "Sure, why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell® notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular

RAZR V3® cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satel-

lite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans

the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The yuppie then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop® and exports it to an image pro-

cessing facility in Hamburg, Germany...

Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot® that the image has been processed and

the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL® database through an ODBC connected Excel®

spread sheet with email on his Blackberry® and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet®

printer, turns to Billy and says, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, you'll be helpin' yourself to one of me calves, then, since you won it fair en

square." says Billy.

He watches the smartly dressed yuppie select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as

the man gingerly picks it up & stuffs it into the boot of his car.

As the yuppie is carefully brushing the dust & hair off his suit, Billy says, "Hey, if I can tell you

exactly what work you do & where you come from, will you give me back my calf?"

The yuppie thinks about it for a second, wondering what this wrinkled up dirt encrusted unedu-

cated old man could possibly know? He grins and then says, "Okay, old fella, why not? I'm a be-

liever in fair play."

"You're a politician & you work in Canberra." says the old timer.

"Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but, tell me how on earth did you guess that?"

"No guessing required." answered Billy "You showed up here even though nobody called you;

you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You used millions

of dollars worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you

don't know a thing about how working people make a living - or about cows, for that matter. This

is a herd of sheep. Now give me back my dog."
