DELIAH BRINKHUIS His photo was published on District- Mail’s front page last week as he lay on a duvet on the floor of the Helder- berg Hospital, his face covered in blood. But the 42-year-old William Abra- hams, a Sir Lowry’s Pass resident, was already dead at the time the newspaper was published. He apparently died after nearly a week in the hospital without treatment. A DistrictMail reader, Monique Car- else, had taken the photo of Abrahams and sent it in because she had seen him lying in the same position on the hospi- tal’s Emergency Unit floor for nearly 12 hours. Abrahams had been taken to the Hel- derberg Hospital on Monday 20 October. According to his family, he spent three days outside the system, never being ad- mitted for treatment, before they were in- formed on Friday that he had died. DistrictMail traced Abrahams’s last days at the hospital: ) Monday 20 October: Abrahams was admitted to the hospital by ambulance at 21:00. When his family left the hospital just after midnight, he was lying in the Emergency Unit on the bed the paramed- ics had left him on. ) Tuesday 21 October: Abrahams’s family found him in the parking area, put him into a wheelchair and wheeled him back into the hospital. In the Emergency Unit, a nurse said, “So this is the man crawling around the hospital the whole night that you were looking for!” ) Wednesday 22 October: The family went to the Emergency Unit to visit Abra- hams at 19:00, and again they could not find him. They found him at the entrance of the ward, slouched against the securi- ty gate. They gave him the duvet they had brought for him – the one he was photo- graphed with and eventually appeared in the DistrictMail with. They asked for a wheelchair and placed him in it. They wondered why his wound had not been attended to and why his face was still covered in blood. His sister told staff that she would wash Abrahams herself the following day. ) Thursday 23 October: DistrictMail reader Monique Carelse photographs Abrahams lying on the floor at 06:50. She sends the photo to the DistrictMail at 08:30 while still at the hospital, and notes that he is still lying on the floor when she leaves at 11:00. Meanwhile, the hospital has phoned the family just after 08:00 to tell her that they need not visit Abra- hams that day, as he is to be transferred to Tygerberg Hospital. ) Friday 24 October: The hospital phones the family at 11:00 that morning, asking that they come to the hospital. A doctor tells them Abrahams had ad- vanced mouth cancer and was booked in- to Helderberg Hospice, but had died while a nurse was cleaning him. However, Patricia McNaught-Davis, spokesperson for Helderberg Hospice, told DistrictMail that they have no record of a referral for William Abrahams. Beverly Carelse, Abrahams’s sister, says the family did not know he had mouth cancer. They took him to the hos- pital because he had a bleeding wound on his tongue that had become infected after an alleged epileptic fit a month be- fore. He had not eaten properly for weeks and was too weak to walk. She says her brother deserved better treatment, “especially if it is true that he had mouth cancer”. “Perhaps they thought he was nothing, because of his appearance,” she says. She says the family did wonder why he was not in a bed, and she asked for Abrahams’s file twice, but staff told her that the file is “with the doctor”. “Willie would have had a more digni- fied death at home than what he had in the Helderberg Hospital,” says Carelse. Hélène Rossouw, spokesperson for Western Cape health minister Theuns Botha, said that they cannot comment at present as the incident is still being in- vestigated. She undertook to provide comment once the investigation had been concluded.

Towtrucks raise resident’s ireJAMEY GORDON

ADistrictMail reader has taken photos oftow trucks apparently aggravating trafficflowaroundanaccidentscene inSomersetWest on Monday.

One of the images shows the tow trucks ofthree local towing services –N2Towing, Steyland En Route. Two En Route tow trucks canbe seenparked in the road, blocking two lanesof traffic at the intersection ofMain andLour-ensford Road. The Helderberg resident, who prefers to re-

mainanonymous,saysthewaytowtruckdriv-ers speed is “ridiculous” and getting out ofhand.Theresident explainshowhewitnessedthree tow trucks speed up Bright Street inSomerset West in a race to try get to the acci-dent scene first.According to Sergeant Suzan Jantjies,

spokesperson for the Somerset West Police, the accident occurred at 15:50 on Mondaywhen a car that jumped a red traffic light col-lided with another car travelling in the direc-tion of Lourensford Road.No-one was seriously injured. The resident

explains that the En Route tow truck camespeeding up the street into oncoming trafficto be at the accident scene first.Another reader, Pippa Malherbe, also con-

tacted the DistrictMail and says she was re-versingoutofaparkingbay in thestreetwhenan En Route tow truck came speeding intooncoming traffic. Malherbe says fortunatelyshe sawwhatwashappening and slammedonher brakes.Malherbe says she confronted the driver of

the tow truck, but said he apparently couldn’tbe bothered listening to her.Meanwhile the Steyl and N2 Towing trucks

had come to a standstill in the middle of theintersection, says the resident. This allegedlycaused traffic to come to a halt and preventedotheremergencyvehicles fromgainingaccessto the accident scene. He says the drivers of

the tow trucks onlymoved their vehicles afterthey had inspected the accident scene.“The drivers of the Steyl and N2 Towing

trucks parked their vehicles on the side of theroad, but not En Route,” says the resident. After a second En Route tow truck arrived

on the scene, both tow trucks blocked off twotraffic lanes for more than 20 minutes, saysthe resident.“Why do they think they have the right to

stop their bakkies in the middle of the roadand hold up traffic? Just because they havelights on the roofs of their bakkies, does notmean that the road rules and regulations donot apply to them. They put so many lives atrisk when they speed on roads.”According to Inspector Maxine Jordaan,

spokesperson forTrafficServices,non-officialand non-emergency vehicles have to complywith legislation governing the general rulesof the road, and are not exempt from this inany way. Jordaan adds that all tow trucksmust be fitted with amber lights that have tobe used at all times when towing a vehicle.DistrictMail tried on numerous occasions

to obtain comment from owner and managerof En Route Towing, to no avail.JeanSteyl,ownerofSteylBreakdownServi-

ces, admitted that hewas the driver of the towtruck that had sped to the accident scene thatday, and witnessed the En Route tow truckspeeding into oncoming traffic to get to thesame scene. Steyl explains that it is no secretthat tow trucks speed to accident scenes, butthat they try to do so in a law-abidingmanner.Jean Meyer, owner of N2 Towing, told the

DistrictMailheisnotawareoftheincidentandtherefore could not comment.

Lwandle evictions report discussedParliament’s human settle-ments portfolio committeehad the opportunity to “quiz”the Department of HumanSettlements on Tuesday 4 No-vemberaboutthereportof theministerial inquiry into theLwandle evictions. This follows after the re-

port, which revealed that theevictions were “illegal”, wassubmitted to the committeebyHumanSettlementsMinis-ter Lindiwe Sisulu on Thurs-day 23 October. While outlin-ing its findings, Sisulu saidthat Sanral and the City, aswell as the Sheriff of Strand,SAPS and the law enforce-ment agencies of the City“knowingly conspired” and

Foulplay suspected indisappearanceofgeeseJAMEY GORDON

Aresidentof theLaVistasecuritycomplex in Somerset West sus-pects a fellow resident has beenshooting Egyptian geese on thepremises.

According to Mia Broekman, thecomplex’s gardenerhasalreadybur-ied four of these geese. She believes the resident has been

killing Egyptian geese for the pastmonth simply because they maketoo much noise.Broekman explains that Egyptian

geese would often visit the dam be-low her house. She says that in the seven years

she has been living at the complex, she became used to the presence ofone particular gaggle that had pro-duced several batches of goslingsover the years. Now, according to Broekman, on-

ly the gander remains. She also knows of an incident

where two Egyptian geese were sit-ting in the swimmingpool enclosurewhen they were shot from nearby.Shenowdescribestheatmosphere

at the pond as “very quiet” since thenoisethebirdsweremakinghasdieddown – detracting somewhat fromthe otherwise sylvan setting.Broekman says she has reported

the matter to the police as well as tothe chairperson of the board of trus-tees, Dr Gareth Arnott.Arnott told DistrictMail that he

does not know for a fact that a resi-dent in the complex is shooting the

birds. He says this allegation is onlyhearsay and that the complex sur-rounds a dam, which is municipalground. He says thatwhat happens on that

ground is beyond the scope of the in-volvement of the trustees.Furthermore, Arnott says that

they have a “sophisticated” What-sapp group for reporting any dis-turbances (used for rapid reportingfor suspicious or criminal behav-iour, alarmssounding, andso forth). He says no one has heard any fire-armbeingdischarged. “Inacomplexof our size, it would be impossible tohide this. Thus it is extremely un-likely that a firearm has been usedin or on the grounds,” says Arnott.According toWanikaDavids, pub-

lic relations officer for the Cape ofGoodHopeSPCA, thematterwas in-vestigated by the SPCA.However, no evidence was found

to leadthemtoaperpetrator, asnoneof the neighbours witnessed the al-leged incident.“Therewerenobodies forus to ex-

amine and a lot of different accountsof what had actually happenedwereheard. With no further evidence, wecannotproceedanyfurtherwiththiscase,” says Davids.Davids explains that if a perpetra-

tor is found, the SPCA will presscharges of animal cruelty under theAnimal Protection Act of 1962. If aperpetrator is foundguilty, heor shecould facepossible imprisonment ora fine.

Trokke ‘wettig’inwoonbuurtDELIAH BRINKHUIS

GOTCHA! Snakecatcher RudolphHerbst (seen here holding a large female puffadder) was called to catchthis snake when a staff member at Willowbrook Lodge noticed the snake nearthe trail close to the Morgenster bridgeover the Lourensford River at RadloffPark on Saturday morning. Herbst laterreleased the snake safely into the wild.He says he has caught several puffadders in the Somerset West area alreadythis summer. Although he has a fulltimejob, Rudolph has offered his assistancewith snakes and can be contacted at072 523 1589. As Radloff Park is popular with dog walkers and children, people should be aware that thesesnakes have emerged from hibernationand are active at this time of year.

‘Angel’ top learneratOprahAcademyDELIAH BRINKHUIS

Macassar resident, Angelica le Roux hasbeennamed the best overall learner at theOprah Winfrey Leadership Academy forGirls.

Angelica received this award as well as theaward for best learner in all of her nine sub-jects which include: maths, advanced maths, science, physics and languages at their recentgraduationceremonyat the school on11Octo-ber.The boarding school opened in January

2007 in Henley-on-Klip nearMeyerton, aimedat providing educational and leadership op-portunities for academically gifted girls fromdisadvantaged communities. Her mom, Kate and the rest of her siblings

are just as proud of her achievement as herformer primary school, Oklahoma Street Pri-mary and the Macassar community.Oklahoma Street principal Patrick Beukes

was quick to boast with Angel (as he refersto her), saying she had held the school’s namehigh through her years at the academy.Kate said she was overjoyed when Angeli-

ca’s name was called out at the ceremony onthe evening and had jumped up and down..“I couldn’t control the tears rolling down

myface, itwasmylittlegirlwhowasthebest,”she said.Her dad, Christopher,who died in 2012, had

teased her when she started at the academy, saying she would soon forget being raised Af-rikaans and would drink only bottled water.Kate says the opportunity to have her

daughter enrolled challenged the family.Christopher was a policeman in Macassar

at that timeand wasvery ill havingbeendiag-nosedwithpost-traumaticstressandlivercir-rhosis in 2006. The decision was left to Katealone.“I feared it would be the wrong decision to

have her go away to attend the school,” shesaid. Her faith however carried herthrough, and threemonths later she let her12-year-old daughter go with the certaintythat this decision could only bring positivechange to her life.Angel did not let her family down and ex-

celled academically as well as in sport. Themany photographs, certificates and schoolyearbooks in the Le Roux home bear testi-mony to her hard work and dedication.Kate says the school has shapedAngelica

into a balanced young adult, and that shetook up athletics and karate – in which shehas a black belt – as well as started playingthe guitar. She says Angelica’s nickname is Angel

and she lives her life accordingly. She is al-ways ready to encourage and help othersand although she was thousands of kilome-tres away from home, she has been a pillarof support for her and her siblings Melody(22), Christiaan (16) and Christopher (7).Angelica is a humble person who never

boasts about her achievements, says Kate. She was surprised when Angelica was cho-sen as guest speaker at the iLive2LeadYoung Women’s International LeadersSummit at Georgetown University in theUSA in June last year. She was the youngest speaker and had

spokeabout the school’s involvement in theOrange Farm Project, which she had beensteering at the school. The project involvesrunning a food garden supplying a sanctu-ary for orphans affected by HIV.Life as a single parent is difficult, says

Kate, but she is happy that her children areso close to each other. She says she alwaystries her best to make them all feel specialand not to single anyone out.Angelica will return to Macassar at the

end of November to study medicine at theUniversity of Stellenbosch.

Taxi reversesoverwell-knownSomersetWest hairdresser

LastWednesdaywasabeautifuldayand a perfect day for cycljng. Earlythat morning I met up with Wanna-bee Cycling Club members, androde out to Betty’s Bay.

As I needed to get back to work,I decided not to join the group forcoffee in Betty’s Bay and rode backon my own.

I should’ve taken the hint whenIgottwopuncturesonmywayback, but it had been a perfect ride andI just expected a perfect ride back.

However, as I approached Green-ways in Gordon’s Bay Road, just be-fore the turnoff to get into StrandBeach Road, a taxi overtook me andstopped a few metres in front of me.I wondered why he had overtakenme, just to stop a few metres in frontof me. There was a lot of traffic pass-ing on the right-hand side, and rath-er than take an unnecessary risk, Istopped about two metres behindthe taxi to wait for him to pull offagain.

Suddenly though, I saw the taxireversing at full speed towards me,

as ifhewantedtokillme.Therewasnothing I could do. For a split sec-ond, I thought: “This is it, this is thelast day of my life.”

I put my arms up in front of me.There was a big impact. I wasthrown about a metre back, fallingon my shoulders and back. Afterthat, there was only pain.

Fortunately, there were somepeople who saw the accident andcame to help. I was dazed, lying onthe road and waiting for an ambu-lance.

I saw the driver standing lookingdown at me. I asked: “Why did youreverselikethat, andatthatspeed?”

He responded by swearing ag-gressively at me as well as at a ladywho saw the accident, and said shewas a witness.

I spent therestof thedayinhospi-tal for X-rays and being examined.Luckily nothing was broken, butmy back and shoulders were verysore. I must still go for a furthercheck- up to verify if any ligamentshave been torn.

As for the taxi driver, I do notknow what he was thinking, but Iintendontakingthismatter furtherandifatallpossiblehavehis licenserevoked.

Most importantly however, Iwould like to thank all the peoplewho stopped to help me, especiallyElsabé who witnessed the accident,theparamedicswhoattendedtome,myteam-matesTomandPennywhoarrived later on at the scene of theaccident, and last but not least. thestaffatMediclinicVergelegenCasu-alty who took care of me when I wasbrought in. I’m more grateful thanwords can express, thank you all. Iam happy to be alive.

SASHA G PATS-NOUGUESConstable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokes-person for the Strand Police, re-sponds: “I can confirm that an acci-dent was reported to the Strand Po-lice and an accident report wasopened. At this stage there is no criminal in-vestigation taking place in relationto this incident.”

‘Desire tomorallypolice the community ismisplaced’Your publication on 9 October, page 8 refers, with specific refer-ence to the letter regarding theplacing of artwork on Mooibergefarm.

I came across this letter in theform of a posting to Facebook on 9OctobertovariousFacebookpages,accompanied by a call to emailyourself and the owner of the farmto complain about the placing ofthese artworks.

To claim that the placing of thesculptures would lead to abuse ofchildren is egregious, and invitesthe reader to make a leap of imagi-nation that insults the intelligenceof the common person who woulddrive past there and see that.

I understand the desire to protectthe most vulnerable in our commu-nity, but the ire is sorely misplacedin this instance.

I would not have taken the time

to write and have moved on had itnot be for the public call to actionon Facebook to write to theDistrict-Mailand also the owner of the farmin support of this comedy of citizenmoral policing. It is invasive andit is wrong. From these posts I havealso learned that Cassy indicatedthat she would contact the City ofCape town about the statues.

IinviteDistrictMail toavailitselfof two things; firstly please take thetime to read the many posts in sup-portof theownerof this farmwherethese calls to action have been post-ed, and secondly read section 16 ofthe Constitution of South Africa.

1.c) Protects the owner of thesestatues’ freedom of artistic creativ-ity, and

2.c) clearly defends against theincitement to cause harm.

Posting on Facebook to cause acomplaint against a business that

is fully within its rights can causeharm to the business.

There are more important thingsto worry about in our beautifulWestern Cape than the placing ofmetal sculptures.

Ihopethat thiswillnotgofurtherand that attention to real problemstakeprecedentoveradesiretomor-ally police the community.

het nie.Lewensdekking teenoorbe-

lewensdekking verlaag. In daardie stadium moet daar ernstig

Daar is ongeskiktheidsdekking nodigindien ’n ongeluk sou gebeur en jy dalkongeskik of tydelik ongeskik sou raak.

DistrictMail/BeaumontSixes – isawinnerThis years DistrictMail/Beaumont sixeswas another amazing success. The weatherwas great, the cricket outstanding and thesupport fantastic.

I’m a very proud coach today, as Beaumontwere crowned sixes champions on Saturday. Itcouldn’t have been scripted any better.Hats off to Les Kets of Beaumont and Mark

for jumping on board immediately. The beautyofthecompetitionisthatnotoneschoolhasdom-inatedtheeventovertheyears,infacttherehavebeen 12 different winners since the inception ofthe tournament.Beaumont played De Hoop in this year’s ab-

sorbingfinal.Welldonetobothteamsforplayinggreat cricket throughout the day.To my boys: Juan, Niel, Jared, Josh, Joubert

and Jannick, well done, you made your schoolproud. The thing that struckme themost on the day

was use of spin by all teams. Gone are the daysof teams having one spinner. My side for exam-ple had three spinners. It has become apparentover the years that taking the pace off the ballis very important . If one scrutinises the score

sheets it’s evident that the spinners took morewickets thanthequicksand conceded lessruns.Insayingall this though, it isalsoevidenthow

the standard of batting has improved over theyears.About10yearsagothe finalistswerescor-ing 150 or 160 runs (total after three matches)nowteamsarescoringwell inexcessof 200runs.De Hoop scored 240 runs after their three

games this year and Beaumont 220 (the twoteamswith themostrunsoverall on thedaycon-test the final). So although teamsare becoming shrewder by

picking spinners, the batsmen have adjustedwell. There were 80 sixes hit on the day, an im-pressive effort by primary school boys. Againit just proves how good the standard of juniorcricket is in the Helderberg. Thanks toDistrictMail for their ongoing sup-
