NO CONNECTED CAR WITHOUT APIS
APIs allow the cars and apps to communicate with
each other.
Sensors in the car connect to internal
systems using an API.
Currently 23 million cars on the road are connected to the Internet in some manner, by 2020 its expected that 152 million cars will be connected.2
In the next 5 years, this industry is projected to grow at a rate of 35% to $132 billion.3
By launching a mobile application that allows people to request a driver with just a click of a button, Uber has basically created an API between cars and users, through their smartphones. Using their API, a new niche market was opened and a $3.5 billion company was born. Now Uber is thought to make ~$1 billion in gross bookings1. After the 80% cut to drivers, this is about $200 million in revenue each year.
