In most countries over 90% of people over 65 liveat home. Between 50% and 70% of peoplereceiving care for a serious illness say they wouldprefer home care at the end of life.
As death approaches some may wish to acceptcare in an inpatient hospice, hospital, elderly carehome, or nursing or residential facility.
In most countries a majority of people actually diein hospital. However, variations in the proportionof people dying at home suggest this is related tothe organization and delivery of services ratherthan peoples' preferences. In most countries anincreasing proportion of deaths occur in nursinghomes.
