Ta ’ Barkat is a €60 mi l l ion p lant which treats 80 per cent of sewage produced in Mal ta and was
inaugurated in June 2011 by the Pr ime Minister of Mal ta . The p lant construct ion, at Ta ’ Barkat , means
that Mal ta has become the f i rst Mediterranean country which treats a l l o f i ts sewage before dumping i t
into the sea. The new plant can a lso produce one megawatt of e lectr ic i ty per hour . ASDEA des igned the
Advanced Aerobic B io log ica l F i l t rat ion And Oxygenated Reactor (B IOFOR) bui ld ing for the p lant .
Ta ’ Barkat es una p lanta de 60 mi l lones de euros , que trata e l 80% de las aguas res iduales producidas
en Malta y fue inaugurada en Junio de 2011 por e l Pr imer Min istro de Malta . La construcc ión de la p lanta

The structura l concept of the Petra Indah Br idge was a st imulat ing and complex chal lenge. The proposed
solut ions cons idered a mult i -span cont inuous br idge wi th an e legant i l luminated a luminum cover and a
very complex cable-stayed long span br idge. S lender and stunningly e legant , th is 300-meter- long cable-
stayed br idge has two curved s ing le co lumn towers . The road carr ied by the br idge wi l l be des ignated
as a motorway , wi th two lanes of t raf f ic in each d irect ion and hard shoulders to ensure that any
maintenance work , breakdowns, or acc idents do not cause severe congest ion.
E l concepto estructura l de l Puente Petra Indah fue un reto est imulante y comple jo . Las so luc iones
propuestas cons ideraron un puente cont inuo compuesto por var ios tramos con una e legante cobertura
de a luminio y un comple jo cable tens ionado a lo largo del puente. Esbel to e impres ionantemente
e legante , este puente de 300 metros de largo t iene dos torres de columnas curvas indiv iduales . La
carretera del puente será des ignada para e l uso de motoc ic letas con dos carr i les de tráf ico en cada
d irecc ión y arcenes para asegurar que cualquier t rabajo de mantenimiento , descompostura o un
acc idente no cause una severa congest ión.

This tower is an ambit ious project developed in co l laborat ion wi th SAUD. i t and ZEF Ltd for the
ThyssenKrupp internat ional compet i t ion in Dubai . The shape of the tower is the resul t of complex
studies a imed at enabl ing the skyscraper to funct ion wi th zero net energy consumpt ion. Th is goal
was achieved by us ing a combinat ion of renewable energ ies such as geothermal and wind.

The her i tage bui ld ing “Emic ic lo” , a lso known as pa lace of the exposi t ion , is now used as the headquarters of
the Abruzz i Region. In 1888 the archi tect Car lo Wald is des igned th is unique bui ld ing wi th a hexagonal -shaped
port ico wi th 12 dor ic co lumns. The a im of the project was to restore and strengthen the bui ld ing which was
severe ly damaged by the earthquake which struck the Abruzz i reg ion on the 5th of Apr i l 2009. The se ismic
strengthening was achieved us ing v iscous dampers and Steel F iber Reinforced grout mater ia ls (SFRG) .

The v i l la has three f loors and i t i s immersed in a vast park surrounded by majest ic vegetat ion. The
internal decor was painted in the 18th century . The main ha l l i s 9 meters h igh and is covered by a
th in vaul t open at the center to i l luminate the room. The v i l la was h ighly damaged by the 2012 Emi l ia
earthquake and the a im of th is pro ject was to restore the bui ld ing us ing innovat ive mater ia ls and
techniques such as Steel F iber Reinforced Grout (SFRG) .

Como se menciona en e l ant iguo reg istro de t ierra de la C iudad de Modena, este edi f ic io ex ist ió
desde 1687. La V i l la t iene tres p isos y está inmersa en un enorme parque rodeado de una vegetac ión
abundante. La decorac ión inter ior fue p intada en e l s ig lo XVI I I . La sa la pr inc ipa l t iene 9 metros de
a l tura y está cubierta por una delgada bóveda abierta en e l centro para i luminar la habi tac ión. La v i l la
fue gravemente dañada en e l 2012 por e l terremoto Emi l ia y e l objet ivo de este proyecto fue reparar
e l edi f ic io ut i l i zando mater ia les innovadores y técnicas como Mortero Reforzado con F ibra de Acero
(SFRG)

The idea of creat ing a showcase of Abruzz i ’ s reg ional food was conceived by a loca l entrepreneur and
consists of the renovat ion and se ismic retrof i t of the complex of bui ld ings making up the o ld winery in C i t tà
Sant ’Angelo . The project env isages the integrat ion of d i f ferent structures in a mixed-use complex inc luding
a hote l , a greenhouse, a restaurant , a shop, and a cof fee shop. The complex cons isted of two ex ist ing
bui ld ings and a large new steel bui ld ing . The renovat ion and retrof i t t ing work took three years .

La idea de crear una exposic ión de la comida reg ional de Abruzzo fue concebida por un emprendedor loca l

The project cons isted in strengthening an ex ist ing 73 meter h igh industr ia l tower . The beams average
work ing temperatures ranged between 40 and 75 ºC. To eva luate the bond behav ior at d i f ferent
temperatures , severa l bond tests at d i f ferent temperatures ( ranging f rom 40 to 120º C) were performed.
The tests were analyzed by us ing a f in i te e lement (FE) model based on fracture mechanics which
prov ided important ins ight for analyz ing the exper imenta l data .

El proyecto cons ist ió en forta lecer y reforzar una torre industr ia l de 73 metros de a l tura . La temperatura
promedio de las v igas osc i ló entre 40 y 75 grados cent ígrados. Para eva luar e l comportamiento del
enlace en d i ferentes temperaturas , se rea l izaron var ias pruebas a d i ferentes temperaturas en un rango
de 40 y hasta 120 grados cent ígrados. Las pruebas fueron anal izadas usando un modelo de e lementos
f in i tos basado en la f ractura mecánica que resul tó en interesantes descubr imientos .

The complex cons ists of two adjacent bui ld ings jo ined by a vaul t (ca l led Cavalcav ia ) opening onto V ia Cairo l i :
the former is the anc ient Pa lazzetto Venez iano. I t was erected by the Venet ians as the seat of the ir governors
some years af ter conquer ing the c i ty . To the west of the square r ises Pa lazzo Mer lato and was constructed
between the late 17th and 18th century . Mater ia l character is t ics , geometry and construct ion technology were
studied for each important e lement to bui ld accurate archi tectura l and structura l models . The resul ts of th is
invest igat ion suggested an acceptable r isk leve l and prov ided the informat ion usefu l to se ismica l ly s trengthen
the bui ld ings .

El comple jo consta de dos edi f ic ios adyacentes unidos por una bóveda que terminan en la ca l le Ca iro l i : e l
pr imero es e l ant iguo Palazzetto Venez iano. Fue er ig ido por los venecianos como e l as iento de sus gobernantes ,
a lgunos años después de la conquista de la c iudad. A l oeste de la p laza se a lza e l Pa lazzo Mer lato y fue
constru ido a f ina les del s ig lo XVI I y XVI I I . Las caracter ís t icas de los mater ia les , la geometr ía y la tecnolog ía de
la construcc ión fueron estudiados para cada e lemento importante para constru ir modelos arqui tectónicos y
estructura les adecuados. Los resul tados de esta invest igac ión sugieren un n ive l de r iesgo aceptable .

The study of h istor ica l bui ld ing goes beyond the modern pr inc ip les of earthquake engineer ing and requires
a good knowledge of the bui ld ing techniques at the t ime of construct ion and of the bui ld ing transformat ions
over the centur ies . The a im of th is pro ject was the stat ic and se ismic vu lnerabi l i ty assessment of an anc ient
19m high bel l tower erected in the X I I I century and located in Guardiagre le , Abruzzo, I ta ly . An extens ive in s i tu
exper imenta l campaign was conducted to ident i fy the mater ia l propert ies and the exact geometry of the tower
as wel l as the strat igraphy of the support ing so i l .

El estudio del edi f ic io h istór ico va más a l lá de los pr inc ip ios modernos de la ingenier ía s ísmica y requiere un
buen conocimiento de las técnicas de construcc ión a l momento de la edi f icac ión y de sus transformaciones a
través de los s ig los . E l objet ivo de este proyecto fue la eva luac ión de la vu lnerabi l idad s ísmica y estát ica de
un campanar io ant iguo de 19 metros de a l tura , constru ido en e l s ig lo X I I I y s i tuado en Guardiagre le , Abruzzo,
I ta l ia . Una extensa invest igac ión exper imenta l se rea l izó para ident i f icar las propiedades del mater ia l y la
geometr ía exacta de la torre .
