Classroom ToolsWriting Prompt Builder

You can search the Writing Prompt Library for images/video accompanied by suggested textor create your own writing prompts with the help of the Writing Prompt Builder. You can

access all your saved Writing Prompts by clicking the My Content link at the top of thewebpage.

1. Click the Teacher Center link in the navigation bar at the top.

2. Click Writing Prompt Builder.

3. Click the Create New button. Notice you can also search for writing prompts.

4. On the General Information page, enter your data. Be sure to notice the WritingPrompt option at the bottom to receive an Email notification when a studentcompletes one.

5. Click the Save/Continue button at the bottom.

6. On the Select Media page, use the Search Media box to locate an Image, Clipart, orVideo to include in your writing prompt. Keep in mind that you cant play video from

the DES website during the school day. A lab of students completing this writing

prompt will not be able to watch a video as a part of the activity. However, an

individual student completing makeup work, not a school or not during the school

day, would be able to play the video.7. After you add any media a Border box will be displayed to set the size and color.Your resource will also appear in the Selected Media box.

8. Click the Continue button.

8. On the Customize Text web, Set your Font choices and edit your Title is desired.9. Enter your Caption. Notice the variety of text formatting tools, as well as buttons to

create hyperlinks, insert html and tables.

10.Click the Save/Continue button at the bottom.

11.At the Preview page you can see what your students will see.

You can click on any of the previous pages at the top to go back and makechanges.

You can print the writing prompt.

You can copy the writing prompt to Word.

At the Assign page, you have 2 options for how to give the assignment to your students.

1. Provide the Assignment Code: In Internet Explorer, students will need to go toStudent Center at http://students.discoveryeducation.com/genericStudentIndex.cfm

and enter the assignment code, their first and last name in the fields provided. Youcould create a link to the Student Center on your website for students to click so they

dont have to type in the URL.

2. Provide the Assignment URL: You can use the URL to create a hyperlink on yourwebsite. When student click the hyperlink they are taken directly to the Student

Center. Students enter their first and last name in the field provided to start theassignment.

Students ViewHeres a sample of what your students will see. Once they finish writing and click the

Complete Writing Prompt button, the completed assignment will be saved and a print link

will appear.

Completed Assignments1. To see students completed assignments go to My Content.2. Locate the writing prompt and use the drop down menu in the Action column to

select Grade Book.3. Click the Go button.

4. Click the triangle next to the assignment and it will expand and show a list ofstudents, when they completed the assignment, and their grade. You can click the

view link to see the students work.

Quiz BuilderThe Quiz Builder tool allows you to create online quizzes. Students access quizzes through

the Student Center. You can access all your save quizzes in My Content.You can:

search over 2,000 pre-made quizzes in the Quiz Library

choose individual questions from the Quiz Builder databank

write your own questions

1. Click the Teacher Center link in the navigation bar at the top of the screen.

2. Click the Quiz Builder icon.

3. Notice you can use the Search Quiz Library to locate existing Quizzes. Click theCreate New button.

8. On the Add Question pages, use the Add a Question from the Question Databank boxto locate existing questions to use on your quiz.

9. Use the Create New Question box to choose a question type and enter your own.

The types of questions include True/Falase, Short answer, Multiple choice withone right answer, Multiple choice with more than 1 right answer.

You can include Video with individual questions.10.Click the Continue button at the bottom.

Assignment BuilderUse the assignment builder to create online activities and web-based projects for your

students that integrate a variety of resources. Students access assignments through theStudent Center. You can access all your saved Assignments by clicking the My Content link

Creating a new Assignment

1. Click on Teacher Center in the navigation bar at the top of the screen.

2. Click the Assignment Builder icon.

Curriculum ResourcesCalendarThe Calendar tool is a great way to locate videos that are associated with important events in

history, prominent people, commemorative events and cultural celebrations.

1. Click the Teacher Center link in the navigation bar at the top of the screen.

2. Click the Calendar icon.

3. Calendar events are categorized by subject area. You can customize your display byviewing all events for a specific day or choose to view events for an entire week or

month, sorted by subject.4. Click on an event title to view a full event description and a list of resources which may

include full videos, video segments, articles, and images.

4. Lesson plans can be viewed or saved in PDF or MS Word format, or Added to MyContent.

5. To save a lesson plan, click on the appropriate format and select Save.6. Navigate to the desired location. You can change the name of the lesson, but must keep

either the .pdf or .doc file extension.
