WHY TEACHER EDUCATION AT LYON? In keeping with its mission as a liberal arts institution, Lyon College ensures that its graduates who become licensed teachers have completed a liberal education. Anchored in the EPIC common core, the elementary education major integrates liberal arts coursework for a well-rounded preparation in all academic content areas. Likewise underpinned by the core, the secondary and K-12 concentrations are paired with a major in a liberal arts discipline. At Lyon, we believe that liberally educated people are thoughtful, ethical, critical, and creative men and women with ingrained habits of reasoned thought and virtues of honesty, fairness, and respect for others. We want candidates with these dispositions to become teachers and future leaders in our schools. Combined with intensive faculty mentorship and many hours of field experience throughout the two-year program, Lyon’s liberal arts focus in teacher education prepares graduates to do just that. Dr. Nikki Yonts, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Education, has served as division chair for the social sciences and director of the Nichols International Studies Program. Ms. Karin Brown, Assistant Professor of Elementary Education, coordinates the elementary education program. She taught for 19 years at the elementary level and has worked in teacher education since 2011. discover TEACHER EDUCATION Lyon’s teacher education program provides aspiring teachers with professional training and extensive classroom experience in addition to a solid education in the liberal arts. The program prepares students for teacher licensure in elementary education; secondary education in English, math, and social studies; and K-12 education in choral music. All candidates pursuing teacher licensure must complete the required major and professional coursework, a two-year field experience sequence during which they gain hands-on experience at our partner school districts, and additional testing and professional development as required by the state of Arkansas. » The elementary education major prepares candidates for licensure at the K-6 level through a course of study grounded in the liberal arts and linked closely to the College’s new core curriculum. The curriculum is designed to foster intellectual skills, humane instincts, content and pedagogical competence, and an understanding of the developmental processes of children. » The secondary education concentration prepares candidates for licensure in grades 7-12 and is taken in conjunction with a liberal arts major in the teaching field.
