Dear Readers

You may already know that the Olympic torch is coming to Southampton on 14th July. Being

rather cynical, I couldn’t initially see what the fuss is about. But I’ve changed my mind. You see,

it’s not just about seeing a flame being carried; the real opportunity is to cheer on the local

people who have been chosen to carry the torch. When I Googled the details of the

route (page 4) the London 2012 website listed the torch bearers and a little bit of

information about them (www.london2012.com/torch-relay/torchbearers). We have

eighteen and I’ve highlighted only three but all are equally worthy of the honour.

Hilary Corrick from Southampton. Hilary has worked tirelessly as a social worker for

many years and since retiring still works in social care as a consultant. A keen runner,

she is an inspiration and a wonderful role model.

Heather lambert from Totton, a local foster carer and has dedicated her life to looking

after vulnerable children.

Jim dowdall, 86 from Thornhill, who suffered a mini stroke at the age of 71 and part of

his recovery was to challenge himself to run the London Marathon at 73. Since then,

he’s completed eight marathons, raising nearly £16,000 for a local cancer charity and

has been awarded an MBE.

Everyone’s stories are in equal part inspiring and humbling in that there are so many

people out there who seem to achieve so much more than the average person.

Sometimes the individuals have personal challenges to deal with and yet still manage

to contribute to society and to all around them; and sometimes the torch bearer is just

an ordinary person who has devoted so much of their time to help others. Every one

of them looks to be deserving of this recognition and honour so I wish them the very

best for their day and – please – could someone just switch off the rain for a few hours!

To follow on this theme, if you know of a special person who deserves recognition, let

me know and I’ll get their permission to feature them as a “local star”. As always, please send in details of local

events, local charities and anything of interest you think others in your community would like to know about.

Once a case is accepted, a home visit prepares allthe paperwork and all cases are submitted with anexpert medical report produced by Senior MedicalPractioners with experience of elderly care.

“Compensation is not going to bring back a relativewho has sadly passed away but helping to recovera financial legacy that was lost due to poor PCTpractices is very important for the families leftbehind.”

Are the shoulder straps digging into your shoulders? Is the back ofyour bra riding up? Are your breasts bulging out of the cup? Doesyour bra move when you raise your arms? Is your bra so old it’s losingits elasticity and support? Do you suffer from neck, shoulders andbackache? If any of your answers were YeS then please read on.

It is really important that you have your bra fitting checked regularly -ideally by a bra fitting specialist and at least once a year. You will notremain the same bra size throughout your life. Weight loss, pregnancy,breast-feeding, a new exercise regime, your monthly cycle, contra-ceptive pill and HRT can all change the shape and size of your breastsas well as your general size.

The effect of the wrong size bra is that it will not provide enough supportfor your breasts meaning your muscles have to do all the work. The

British Chiropractic Association have warned that wearing the wrong bra size could lead to manyproblems, including back pain, restricted breathing, abrasions, breast pain and poor posture. An ill-fittingbra will almost certainly cause back pain as you get older due to the adverse effects on the shoulders andchest. However the right fitting will mean improved posture, minimised back pain, uplifted breasts andeven an improved body shape.

When shouldI get my petneutered?

MAnY of us currently own pets and alot of our pets have been neutered. Thequestion of why we do this is often askedby owners of pets and can be explainedby the following;

For females there is no chance ofunwanted pregnancies, as well as noseasons, which can cause mess andunwanted male dog attention! Thefemale is also less likely to suffer withmammary cancer and infections ofthe uterus if neutered early in life.

In males there are also many benefits toneutering. For example, by removing thetestosterone influence on behaviour, weare reducing problems such as aggressionand wandering. Neutering will also stopany chance of testicular cancer as well asreduce the problems of prostrate diseaseand other related cancers.

The question of when to neuteris also commonly discussed atthe veterinary surgery and theanswer is normally at ayoung age. In cats we liketo carry out the procedurearound 6 months of age tostop unwanted litters. Indogs there can besome variation inopinion, although ingeneral we wouldrecommend that thestandard age isaround sixmonths, thismay vary withbreed and individual patient needs and would need discussing

with the vet prior tobooking the procedure.

Some animalscan put on abit of weight

after neutering but this is easily controlled with a suitable diet –it is just a matter of adjusting your animals’ calorific intakeaccordingly.
