ARE YOU AGED 19 OR OVER AND THINKING ABOUT FURTHER EDUCATION?

Most learners aged 19 and over, studying at Level 3 to 6, will qualify for these loans from the UK government. It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £21,000 a year.

k If you're aged 19 or over and want to study an Access to Higher Education Diploma, or a Level 3 to 6 Vocational Qualification, you'll need to pay your college or training organisation for the cost of your course.

k The Advanced Learner Loan is a government-funded loan to help learners. It's easy to apply for, doesn’t take your household income into account and doesn’t involve a credit check.

k Repayments are linked to what you earn and not how much you borrowed.

k You only have to start making repayments when you’ve finished your course and you’re earning over £21,000 a year (which is £404 a week or £1,750 a month). Until then you don’t need to pay back anything, but you can make voluntary repayments at any time*.

k You pay 9% of the money you earn over £21,000, before tax. For example, if you earn £22,000 a year, your monthly repayment will be £7 a month; and if you earn £35,000 a year, it will be £105 per month*.

k Interest is charged on a sliding scale between the Retail Price Index (RPI) and RPI +3%, depending on how much you earn.

k If you are looking to go to university, and are considering enrolling on an Access to Higher Education course, the cost of your course will be written off entirely if you go on to complete a university degree.

You may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. These loans help you to pay the fees charged by colleges and training organisations.

YOUR GATEWAY TO

“I left the army in August 2016 after serving as a frontline medic for 7 years. I decided to visit the College to explore my options as I knew I wanted to pursue a career as a vet. I chose to study an Access to Higher Education course with pathways in Chemistry, Biology and Applied Science- alongside my GCSE maths and English.

The staff at the College have been very supportive. Their industry experience and depth of knowledge has been invaluable to my journey.

I recently had an interview at the University of Bristol and was offered a place at the School of Veterinary Sciences – one of only 6 in the UK.

The college provided me with a stepping stone to my desired career. ”

Q Q

QQ

Can I study English and maths at South Devon College?Absolutely! Refreshing or developing your skills in English and maths can have a significant, positive impact that lasts a lifetime. The ability to read and write confidently is essential in a variety of careers, but can also benefit you greatly in your day-to-day life and open up possibilities you hadn’t previously considered. See page 16 for more information.

Will people on my course be a similar age to me?Don’t worry, we do not have an upper age limit on our adult courses, therefore groups tend to be varied. If you are coming to study on a full time vocational course it is likely you will also be learning alongside some of our 16-18 year old students. Studying among students with a varied age range is a great way to diversify your social circle and gain an enriching experience!

As an adult, can someone help me decide which course is best for me?Yes, our award winning matrix accredited guidance team are here to help you make the right decision that is best for you. We can assist you every step of the way to give you the right information and advice that helps you to choose a course that suits your ability, interests and long term goals. We understand that stepping back into education or employment can be a huge one to make and we want to make sure you are supported with this move so that is a positive experience.

Can I undertake an apprenticeship if I am over 19?Of course! It is an assumption that apprenticeships are only for people under 18, however we find that most employers value the experience and dedication of older students. The biggest barrier tends to be the wage; however some companies are willing to pay more than the national living wage for the right candidate. With an apprenticeship, you are also more likely to be able to progress within the company once your apprenticeship has finished. See page 12 for more information.

Take your first steps toward a rewarding career in Teaching with South Devon College!

I've always had a passion for animal welfare and having worked in the industry for many years I felt it was time to progress with my career. I decided to enrol on the FdSc Animal Science degree at the University Centre based at South Devon College.

The tutors were extremely supportive and encouraged me to complete my top up year at Plymouth University. I had gained so much from completing the Foundation Degree it was an easy decision for me. I went on to graduate with a Bsc (Hons) in Animal Conservation Science.

During my studies I was lucky enough to secure work on the Animal Unit, based at South Devon College. It was during my time studying and working at the College that I realised I wanted to teach. I wanted to share my knowledge and passion with others and hopefully inspire them to pursue a career in the sector.

I have just completed my Diploma in Education and Training.

I'm so grateful I decided to return to College; every step of my journey has presented me with new opportunities. I now work at the College as a Lecturer in Animal Science helping students take the first steps toward their chosen career.
