New shop caters to cycling enthusiastsBy LaureL robertsonIt started in a closet. Twenty years ago Michael and Teresa Johnson set out to make the expensive sport of cycling more affordable.

They began by selling high perfor-mance tires mail order out of their small apartment (they kept the inventory in the closet). In 1997 they moved the business online. Michael spent 10 (hot and cold) years shipping cycling parts from a “hot box” rented metal building.

Finally, this past March, the Johnsons celebrated cutting the ribbon on their new Texas Cyclesport shop on Fitzhugh Road just east of Dripping Springs.

The new shop itself is spacious and airy…”a wonderful change from the hot-box metal building!” a relieved Michael reports.

In the front showroom a dozen or

more colorful, streamline touring and all-terrain bicycles represent the state-of-the art in bicycling technology.

A carbon wheel rim that’s strong enough to withstand the hardest rigors of touring can be easily lifted with just three fingers; bicycle saddles are incred-ibly small and sleek, yet surprisingly comfortable.

The much larger back room and loft are strategically setup for rapid shipping operations and inventory storage.

Michael, trained in architecture and planning, designed the building to maxi-mize air flow and cooling capability. “I learned about the need for that at the pre-vious location,’ he says with chagrin.

as $5,000 for ultra-light, carbon frame bicycles. Assisted by a bicycle builder who works with professional teams, Mi-chael says they configure bicycles any way the cus-tomer wants.

By partnering with distributors across the country, they pride them-selves with being able to deliver merchandise any-where in the U.S. over-night or next-day.

The new location of Texas Cyclesport was chosen with care. Teresa says they’re now able to offer the greater Austin cycling community a safe and strategic location from which to set off for rides into the beautiful Hill Country beyond.

Though it’s been their tagline for years, “A Better Ride Begins Here” takes on new meaning now that cyclists can park in the safety of the Texas Cyclesport Shop parking lot (with 24-hour sur-veillance) to launch their rides and rely on their shopful of bicycle parts for emergency repairs.

On April 27, Texas Cyclesport is part-nering with Austin’s Please BE KIND to Cyclists non-profit organization to spon-sor the second annual One Lap Around Lake Travis ride.

Beginning at 6:30 am that Saturday, riders will leave Austin Cyclesports park-

ing lot on the beginning of a 120-mile ride that goes to Lakeway, Liberty Hill, Burnet County, Marble Falls, and Cy-press Creek Ranch before returning to Texas Cyclesport.

“It’ll be a tough ride,” agrees Mi-chael, who notes that the route really puts the “hill” in Hill Country.

Bicycles can be configured any way you like at the newly-opened Texas Cyclesport bicycle shop, located at 13505 Fitzhugh Road. Photo courtesy Texas Cyclesport.

Dripping Springs Youth Activity Fund (DSYAF) hosts the 4th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser Thurs-day, May 16 at Falconhead Golf Club. DSYAF was

formed to provide financial assistance to children that re-side in the Dripping Springs Independent School District who would otherwise be unable to participate in extracur-ricular activities due to financial constraints.

With your help, DSYAF was able to increase their reach from helping eight children in their first year to 49 applica-tions in 2012. The group is already processing 20 children’s applications from the first part of 2013.

There are many ways to be a part of the DSYAF Golf Tournament Fundraiser. You can sponsor a hole, enter a team, donate a raffle or silent auction item, supply goodie bags for the golfers, or become the Title Sponsor.

of Volunteers & the City of Dripping Springs.

Don’t miss the 26th Annual Drip-ping Springs Founders Day Fes-tival April 19-21. The fun-filled,

family friendly weekend will kick off Fri-day with The Mighty Thomas Carnival at 4 pm. Then, at 6:30 pm celebrate at the traditional hometown Grand Parade on Mercer Street.

The annual City of Dripping Springs, Texas Founders Day Festival commemo-rates and celebrates the founding of our community in 1850 by the Moss, Wal-lace, and Pound families. The festival promotes cooperation and volunteerism in the community and generates commu-nity spirit and recreation.Sponsored by numerous local businesses and individu-als, this year’s Founders Day fest theme is “Drippin’ Goin’ Green.” Admission to the beloved festival is free.

Guests can stay after the parade Fri-day evening to enjoy delicious festival food, drinks and entertainment until midnight, all in downtown Dripping Springs on Mercer Street. On the Main Stage at 7:30 pm Friday, Carport Casanovas will play their brand of cover songs and dance music, followed by more live music from headliner Bobby Pounds at 10 pm.Then, all weekend long, enjoy the festival highlights at Found-ers Day, including the carnival, live music all weekend on two stages, a washer-pitch-ing contest, more than 200 arts and craft vendors, and 50-plus food and drink vendors.

Cook-off contests are a huge part of the fun at Founders Day. This year, more than 100 cooks compete for top prizes in the Cook Off contests for Fajitas, Chicken, Pork, Brisket, Salsa, Chili, and Beans.

The Dripping Springs Cook Off Club is a strong non-profit organization supporting lots of organizations in Dripping Springs. Club members frequently donates “cooking time and expertise” to local events, and have always played a major role in the spirit of Founders Day. The Dripping Springs Cook Off Club donates its profits back to the community and, over the years, has given extra funds to Helping Hands, the Senior Citizens Activity Center, North Hays County Fire Department, Hays Country Crime Prevention Program, EMS, Dripping Springs Youth Sports Association, and purchased animals from 4-H Livestock Show youths.

Beer will be available at Founders Day. Plus you, can compete in a chicken-clucking contest, enjoy a car bash, a live auction, children’s activities amd plenty more fun.

Major sponsors of 2013 Founders Day festival include RECON, Vaquero, Goodwill Industries and HEB. This city-administered volunteer committee event could not hap-pen without great support, financially and with donations from community individu-als and businesses. Many volunteer hours go into making the Founders Day festival fun, safe, and entertaining for the entire family.

FYI • For more information about the 26th Annual Founders Day Festival April 19-21, call 512-858-4725 or visit the web site at www.foundersdayfestival.com. Admission is free. Parking is available around Mercer Street, but there are streets next to Mercer that will be blocked off by barricades.
