August is Back-to-School Month

Homework Help Resources for Kids and Teens It’s time to gear up for back-to-school! Of course with back-to-school comes homework, projects, and last-minute papers. You can find infor-mation on just about anything from anywhere in the world through our online resources. To get started with any homework help, visit bcpl.org and click “Research”. You will find some trustworthy Research Tools that can help take the stress out of assignments. Scroll down to Homework Help for Kids or Homework Help for Teens. Most of the research tools require a library card. Obtaining a free library card is easy if you don’t already have one. Stop by any of our locations with an ID and proof of address, and one of our staff will assist you. (If under 18, a parent/guardian must sign your application.) An-other option is to request a temporary digital card by visiting our website. Here are highlights for some of the tools we think you will find most helpful.

Homework Help for Kids

Britannica Elementary provides resources on a variety of topics, from plants and animals to science and mathematics. This a great database for students that are looking for basic information on a variety of topics.

Tumblebooks is an online collection of books for K-2 that contain sounds, animation, and narration for young readers.

Primary Search contains primary sources that elementary students can cite as they are learning how to research.

Homework Help for Teens

EBSCOHost contains primary sources appropriate for teens doing re-search. Over 30 different databases can be searched through EBSCOHost. Teens should become familiar with this database because it is heavily used in college.

Gale Literature Resource Center offers a broad range of informa-tion on authors and their works. It provides in-depth analysis, general overviews, and criticisms.

LearningExpress Library provides access to practical academic skills and resources. Students can take practice college entrance exams, work on job skills, review major academic concepts, and more!

Additional Resources

Access Video offers thousands of award-winning educational films, acclaimed documentaries, independent films, and helpful instructional videos!

Mango Language offers 70+ language learning courses and 20+ English as a second language learning options.

National Geographic Virtual Library provides access to the complete archive of National Geographic magazine along with a cross-searchable collection of National Geographic books, maps, images and videos.

Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints

Researching all sides of a much-debated topic has never been easier! Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints gathers continuously updated viewpoints, topic overviews, full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, statistics, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites all in one place. With over 450 debated topics ranging from civil rights to cloning and a special section on national debate topics, you will be presented with unbiased and expert sources and the data to support them. Opposing Viewpoints can be found at bcpl.org/research under Education and Lifelong Learning. All you need is your Library card to begin exploring all sides of an issue and draw your own conclusions.

African Americans in Boone County History

When Boone County was established in 1799, some settlers had already been in the area for sev-eral years. Many of these families were slaveholders who brought enslaved African Americans with them. The labor of these enslaved pioneers helped to clear the land and build the communities in which we now live. In the 1799 tax list, there were 269 enslaved people counted by the enumerator; by 1800 that number had grown to 325, which represented 21 percent of the population, a percentage that would hover around this mark for nearly half a century. Many enslaved people from Boone County left for freedom by way of the Underground Railroad, with the heaviest escape activity taking place from the mid-1840s up to the Civil War. This may account for the percentage of enslaved people dropping significantly by 1860 to 15%. After the Civil War, many who had been enslaved left the area, though African Americans still represented 10% of the total residents in 1870. Socio-economic factors prompted further migra-tions to other communities over the years, and by 1980, less than 1% of the total population of the county was African American. As these families disappeared, awareness of their once having been a part of the community began to dim. Though ample records exist, African Americans were largely absent in the county’s historical narratives and school curriculums. As a result of this omission, the story of our community was incomplete. In 2014, BCPL’s Local History and Genealogy Dept. launched the African Americans in Boone County History Initiative, which includes several projects that have begun to fill the void in our county history. The Underground Railroad in Boone County project has produced several interpretive materials including: a bus tour; classroom presentations and field trips on enslavement, the Underground Railroad, and abolitionists; and an Underground Railroad of Boone County website. Addition-ally, the African Americans of Boone County Resource Collection has advanced several projects including, but not limited to: The Private Daniel Goff Revolutionary War Memorial project; Out of Kentucky: African American Migration project; the Barkshire Family of Rising Sun, Indiana road-side marker project and a growing collection of genealogical data of over 3,300 African Americans once enslaved in Boone County.
