Welcome to your offi cial community guide for Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs.

The region truly is a strong community of small neighbourhoods, close friendships and big dreams.

That’s why we all love living and working here. From the

soothing shores of the lake to the snow-capped mountaintops all around us, the area’s beauty is hard to ignore.

The small town charms are all around us, too. With pastoral settings and the Best Fall Fair around to mom-and-pop shops you know and trust, there seems little reason to ever leave!

But changes are all around us, too. The area is constantly growing, with new businesses and services starting up all the time.

We’ve published this guide to help you navigate the community and rediscover your own backyard. We also wanted to highlight the hidden gems you may be missing, as well as pay homage to the internationally-acclaimed highlights that draw in tourists year after year.

But besides being a mecca for tourists, there is a vibrant business community here, growing in earnest thanks to our hardworking Chamber of Commerce. Businesses are blossoming and the community is stronger than ever.

WELCOME

Jessica Peters EDITOR – THE OBSERVER

As a residential and tourist community, Harrison Hot Springs is a vibrant location to retire, live and travel to work. With its small school and preschool this attracts younger families. For the retired, it is a place where you can involve yourself in hiking, choir, social club and recreational activities. With fresh air, beautiful scenery, arts and culture, you will fi nd

a place to rejuvenate and relax in a health and wellness environment.

This small Village brings together residents and tourists from around the world that enjoy the quaint boutiques and community events. A true “jewel” in the Fraser Valley.

LEO FACIO – MAYOR

The District of Kent has much to offer if you like to be active, to discover and to explore. Out here you get to experience country life at its best. We are the home to thriving dairy farms but in addition, down our quiet rural roads you can fi nd hazelnut orchards, blueberry farms and various greenhouse operations and our famous Farm House Cheese. A really good way to experience our community is by bike, as a matter of fact, Agassiz is well known for its very popular “Slow Food Bike Tour”. You can more fully immerse yourself in the true country experience by staying at one of our fi ne bed and breakfasts. If outing, take a walk on the new Mountain View Trail. When you get hungry, there are a number of fi ne restaurants to choose from; or when all you want is a snack or a fi ne cup of coffee,

there are choices as well. There are golf courses within a 10 to 15 minute drive from downtown and if you like to fi sh or hike there are many good spots in the area. We have many great, wide open spaces to enjoy, beginning with our downtown Pioneer Park. If you are in town on a Thursday afternoon, stop in at the Farmers Market for locally grown handmade and baked goods. Take some time to tour the Museum to learn about our rich heritage. This is also where our Tourist Information Centre service is located.

We are very friendly here. Stop us on the street and we would be happy to answer any of your questions.

Welcome to Agassiz, Enjoy your time here.

RECREATIONA Day for Leisure

Recreation is a vital part of life, and here in Agassiz we take that to heart.

For a full schedule of leisure and recreation programs, visit www.district.kent.bc.ca or visit the Fitness/Activity Centre at 6660 Pioneer Avenue. For more recreation ideas, see our listings on page 12.

A Day for Reading

Have a free afternoon? Try getting lost in the stacks.

The Agassiz Library has a full schedule of activities throughout the year, including a summer reading club for adults and children, Storytime in the Park and special presenters.

Grab a book, an audiotape, a few magazines or even a movie, and hunker down to enjoy a little free entertainment. For more information, visit them at 7140 Cheam Avenue or

online at www.fvrl.bc.ca.

A Day for Shopping

The harder you look, the more you’ll fi nd that our small communities have most of what you’ll need.

Looking for just the right gift? Harrison Village Mall is full of shops fi lled with just what you’re looking for. Or, drop by one of the many small businesses that feature local foods, such as Farm House Cheese or the Back Porch.

A Day In the Park

Every Wednesday through the summer, you’re invited to bring a lawn chair, blanket, friend and even a picnic dinner, to enjoy the Pioneer Park Twilight Concert Series

All performances begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8 p.m., and are free thanks to the support of sponsors. Watch The Agassiz Harrison Hope Observer for weekly information.

Day on the Beach

There are as many reasons to head for Harrison Hot Springs as there are grains of sand on the beaches. When you’re done there, head down Rockwell Drive and travel along the lake’s east shoreline. Take the time to visit quieter beach fronts, or rest in the soothing spray of a waterfall. Stay outdoors a little longer, with a camping trip to either Hicks Lake or Deer Lake, both of which have their own picturesque views and trail systems.

Day at the Farm

The Circle Farm Tour is a collective of farms around the Fraser Valley, and Agassiz and Harrison Mills play important roles.

From cheeses to herbs, cows to hazelnuts, there is something to learn and enjoy at each stop. Visit www.circlefarmtour.com to learn more about the

participants.

Day on two wheels

For one weekend, the roads are fi lled with bicycles, as the Slow Food Cycle Tour heads out to Agassiz.

Cyclists check in, grab a map, and make their way to locations around the District of Kent that grow, bake and cook different local food products, from cranberries to salmon to handmade cheeses.

It’s a delicious way to learn about sustainability and local farming practices. For more information, visit. www.slowfoodvancouver.com.

A Day of Rejuvenation

Okay, not every day is meant to be lived in the fast lane.

Relax and take it easy today. Enjoy one of our several spas or beauty services. Or take a quiet country drive on the back roads.

We think each day should be lived to its fullest potential. Read on, and see how to make the most of your leisure time, right in your own backyard.

A Day with the Family

Nothing beats the laughter of children, and you’ll hear plenty of that around these parts. Whether you’re enjoying mini-golf, the waterslides, a farm tour, Children’s Day at the Festival, fi reworks on Canada Day, all the sights and sounds of the Agassiz Fall Fair or trekking around our many trails, it’s sure to be time well spent with the ones you love.

A Day in History

The oldest wooden railroad station still in existence in B.C. now houses the Agassiz-Harrison Museum where you can see period clothing, artifacts and photos of pioneer life. Admission is free and the museum is open from May to September. The park itself is a beautiful place to take a stroll or stop for a picnic.

Visit them at 7011 Pioneer Ave. or phone 604-796-3545. See

page 14 for more information on local history.

A Day to Celebrate

We may act small town the rest of the year, but the Christmas season doesn’t pass quietly around here.

Agassiz is lucky enough to be a stop for the CPR Holiday Train, which winds its way through six provinces and seven states near Christmastime, collecting for food banks along its journey.

Get out and support the food bank, hear some great live music, and have a chance to see Santa Claus, too.

All the food and money collected here in Agassiz goes directly to the Agassiz Community Services food bank. So this year, bundle up, get down to the tracks and spread the joy.

GET BACK TO THE BOOKSLibraries aren’t the stuffy study halls of yesteryear.

If you haven’t stepped into the library yet, or if it’s been a while, this is the year to get back into the groove of reading.

LIbraries just aren’t what they used to be. While there is still always a quiet corner to curl up and enjoy a book, or dig into some research material, libraries have expanded to fi t the modern lifestyle.

And that means they’re equipped with what you and your family needs to stay informed and entertained. And the Agassiz and Hope libraries are brimming with options for the tech-savvy reader.

With an ample supply of e-books, music CDs for every generation, DVDs, and even books on tape and CD, there are fewer barriers to getting your hands on good reading and listening material these days.

Terrill Scott, Agassiz library supervisor, and the rest of the Fraser Valley Regional Library

staff, also work hard to bring fun writing and photography contests into the community. In Agassiz and Hope, the library partners with community groups to help deliver many of the programs families enjoy throughout the year, including Story Time in the Park.

And once you’ve crammed all that reading in, you’d be smart to enter one of the Friends of the Library Triva Contests, held annually at each location.

To keep in touch with what’s going on at the Agassiz Library, watch The Observer for Scott’s column; she’s been a regular contributor for several years to the weekly newspaper, offering readers a little insight to what’s new and exciting “in the stacks.”

For more information on borrowing items, renewing your card, and more, visit the Agassiz Library at 7140 Cheam Avenue, beside the municipal hall.

CENTRE

t: 604-796-3545e: [email protected]: www.agassizharrisonmuseum.org

Located in Pioneer Park, the Agassiz-Harrison Museum

provides a taste of Canadian history with small town fl avor. The museum resides in a CPR

station built in 1893 and records both local CPR history and extensive archives relating to the Agassiz-Harrison area. Come into our Local-Motive gift shop to see the works of

our local artisans and authors.

Come out and see what really goes on behind

the corn fi elds!

Agassiz is a friendly agricultural community;

known for healthy country living and endless activities!

Experience water sports, fi shing, hiking, cycling, the Circle Farm

Tour or paragliding in the picturesque Fraser Valley.

For the past 10 years, a large collection of artifacts from Agassiz’s farming and forestry history was under lock and key, tucked away in storage.

Milk cans, fi re hoses, farming tools, carts and more weren’t able to make the move from the old museum at the research station, the newer site on Pioneer Avenue. So they stayed there, all but forgotten. Now, thanks to a grant from Farm Credit Canada’s AgriSpirit program, these historic artifacts have a new home.

The Agassiz-Harrison Museum offi cially opened its new “barn” this summer, giving thanks to the many people and businesses that helped make the building a reality.

The barn will serve as an on-site storage, but viewing

windows will be opened during business hours, to allow the public to have a sneak peek back on the past.

“This all used to be housed in a gazebo at the research station,” Judy Pickard says, looking around the barn.

Even some of the materials used to build the barn have a bit of history. The smaller windows on the building came from the Valdoorn farm, and the large barn doors that can be seen on the back wall came from the Hatt farm, which was previously the McRae farm.

To learn more about the area’s history, or what’s happening today, visit the Museum and Visitor Info Centre at 7011 Pioneer Avenue or call 604-796-3545.

Imagine a place where you could tiptoe back in time, learn some history, throw on some gumboots and get dirty.

You can have it all at Kilby Historic Site.

Here, you have the choice to be as quiet as a dormouse or to tromp around the yard with the many farm animals. The oldest building in the District

of Kent is here, and so is the haunted Manchester House Hotel. Ask Kilby’s friendly staff and volunteers to show you around. You might be surprised at what you’ll learn about local folklore.

See the area as it once was, from farm implements and a fueling station to living quarters and the general store and post offi ce.

Recently, Kilby was delighted to receive government funding for restoration of the main building, to ensure the site can be enjoyed for many more years to come.

Also, the Agassiz Harrison Lions Club generously donated $4,000 to the construction of a brand new play area which is now in place — and very popular

among children of all ages.

The site has several special dates planned each year, inviting the public to share in something as simple as the change of seasons. You could camp at Kilby Park or pack a picnic lunch for the day.

This year marks the 108th Agassiz Fall Fair, and 64th Corn Festival. And if you’ve never been, then trust us when we say it has lasted through the years for good reason. Agassiz has its roots fi rmly planted in agriculture, and the fair makes no apologies while celebrating that fact.

From glorious vegetable displays to 4-H accomplishments and demonstrations, to canning, fl owers, crafts and everything in-between, the fair is a beautiful representation of everything Agassiz stands for.

Throw in the much beloved midway and games, entertainment and sinfully delicious food treats, and you’ve got one amazing fair.

The Agassiz Fall Fair has recently been given the title the Best Little Fair, but anyone who has passed through the gates over

the years already knew that.

Don’t forget! If you’re growing the biggest, boldest zinnias, brew the richest ales, or have a handicraft you’d like to display to the community, the Agassiz Fall Fair is the perfect venue. Prize Lists and information booklets are available all around town from late spring until September.

And don’t miss the perennial favourites, including corn husking competitions, a corn cob toss and a corny joke contest.

For more information on exhibiting, times or other related events at the fair, visit their website at www.agassizfallfair.ca.

This year, visit the fair on September 14 and 15.

• Each year an average of10,000 people attend the Fall Fair and Corn Festival.

Fields of green and gold are more than just a picturesque backdrop for our community. The sweet and juicy corn that grows here is known far and wide as simply the best.

Hiking Rules to live by If you’re the type to be inspired by nature, you’re in good company. There is a dedicated group called the Harrison Hikers, who know the local trails like the back of their hands.

But even those who travel by trail regularly know that the unexpected can arise. They advise you follow these tips when hitting the trails — whether you’re a novice setting out for the fi rst time, or an experienced hiker.

• Never hike alone.

• Travel in groups of at least four.

• Hike at the speed of the slowest member of the group.

• Stay on the trail.

• Resist the temptation to collect trees, plants or fl owers.

• Respect wildlife.

• Never approach or feed bears or other wild animals.

• Always pack out what you take in. Don’t bury your trash.

• Keep pets on leash at all times.

Cheam Lake Wetlands Regional ParkSpend some time at the Cheam Wetlands and you’ll leave with a better understanding of nature. Here, 93 hectares of marsh, lake and uplands have been protected as a nature park. The park is home to many bird, animal and insect species, including deer. It is unsuitable for dog walking, fi shing or boating, but the perfect spot for a picnic and a short hike. Cheam Wetlands is 6km south of Agassiz. Take the east exit off the roundabout, following Yale Road to Elgey Road.

Bridal FallsThis is the sixth highest waterfall in Canada, dropping 122 metres to the valley fl oor at Bridal Falls Provincial Park before making its way to the mighty Fraser River. Located close to the Bridal Falls exit on Highway 1, this spot makes a great picnic destination, complete with hiking trails right to the base of the falls, rolling grassy areas and a rain forest canopy perfect for escaping the summer heat.

Campbell Lake Hiking Trail This is a forest hike with good views of Harrison Lake at the top. For this hike, start at the base of the mountain, at Balsam Avenue and Hot Springs Road in Harrison Hot Springs, near the water reservoir. This is a nine km hike, with great views at the top.

Mount Cheam TrailTowering 7,000 ft above us every day, how many of us have taken the time to climb to the top? This hike requires a long drive, and a 4x4 vehicle with adequate clearance.

On Hwy 1, take the Vedder exit and drive through Sardis to Chilliwack Lake Road.Drive until the road crosses Chilliwack River for the second time. Take the forest service road on your left, to Chipmunk Road. Follow Chipmunk Road to Mount Cheam Trailhead (about ½ hr) where the road ends at the tree line. This is where your two to three hour hike begins. Go on a sunny day, bring lots of water, and don’t forget your camera!

It truly is the journey, not the destination, that makes this area a great place to explore. From the wild edges of the Fraser River to our pristine lake shores, there are plenty of “stones left unturned.” And from the highest eastern peaks to the rolling hills that fl ow into the west, there are many “paths less travelled.” Whether you’re up for a leisurely walk, a rugged trail or a breathtaking hike, here’s a guide to some of our popular sites.

EAGLE FESTIVAL

If you head out this fall for a closer look at the bald eagles, there is wildlife viewing etiquette to follow.

1. Keep your distance: Use binoculars, spotting scopes and telephoto lens. ‘Getting closer’ causes the subject to move away.

2. Stay on trails: Straying off them not only damages or destroyssensitive habitat but infringes on the wildlife’s space.

3. Respect your fellow viewing enthusiasts: Once you’ve had a chance tohave a good look, move on.

4. Walk slowly and speak quietly; Nothing can spook wildlife faster thansomeone running towards it shouting “look at the …….”

5. Watch carefully – respect the ‘comfort zone’: all wildlife, including birds, have a ‘comfort zone’ which can vary dramatically depending on species, environment or previous experience. If you inadvertently infi ltrate a comfort zone…stop and retreat until the subject relaxes.

6. Diagonal rather than direct: If you must move closer to a subject, try adiagonal approach, it is perceived as being less of a threat.

7. Teach your children all of the above: NEVER allow your children tothrow rocks at, chase, run up to or try to catch wildlife.

8. Pets: If you are attending an event where there are other viewers…leave your pet at home or in your vehicle.

9. Be Patient: Wildlife doesn’t appear on demand. When possible, pick alikely spot and sit quietly…..you’ll be surprised at what might show up!Visit them online at www.fraservalleybaldeaglefestival.ca.

Each year up to 1,200 bald eagles return to the Harrision-Chehalis delta as the salmon are running.

They travel from miles around to be here, and so do bird watchers.

While these majestic raptors can be seen for weeks throughout Chilliwack, Agassiz and Harrison Mills, there is one weekend dedicated to learning more about eagles. The Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival, held November 17 and 18 in 2012, includes several organized events in Harrison Mills designed to educate the public about raptors and their current plights.

The enormously popular festival takes place in perhaps the most biologically diverse and important areas in British Columbia. Deep in the heart of “Sasquatch Country” you

will fi nd North America’s third largest gathering of bald eagles. The raptors are drawn to the area by the millions of spawning salmon that travel up the Fraser River to tributaries such as the Harrison River. The estuary is also home to incredible wildlife such as trumpeter swans, ducks, seal, bear, coyote, deer and the great white sturgeon.

For thousands of years the First Nation Peoples have lived here in harmony with the land and water and today they work with the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival to welcome visitors to teach and share the knowledge they have gained over the ages.

The festival weekend is also a chance for an annual bird count and volunteers count bald eagles, trumpeter swans and great blue herons.
