(The famous sutta taught below by the Buddha to

meditating monks offers some features of one

with metta and some practical directions)

    Karaya-metta-suttaThe Discourse on Loving-kindness

Karaya mattha kusalena yanta santa pada abhisamecca

Sakko uj ca suhuj ca suvaco cassa mudu anatimn. This is what should be done by who is skilled in goodness and who wishes to know the

path of peace: let one be able, honest with action and words, straightforward with one's

own thought, gentle in speech, humble in manner, and not conceited.

Santussako ca subharo ca appakicco ca sallahukavutti

Santindriyo ca nipako ca appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho.Contented, not fussy, not hectic with activities, frugal in one's way of life,

Calm with six senses, wise, not proud, not greedily attached to families.

Na ca khudda samcare kici yena vi pare upavadeyyu

Sukhino v khemino hontu sabbe satt bhavantu sukhitatt.Let one not do even the slightest thing that the wise might later reprove.

Wishing them joy and safety, may all beings be happy.

Ye keci pabhtatthi tas v thvar va anavases

Dgh v ye mahant v majjhim rassak anuka thl.Whatever living beings there be: weak or strong, tall,

    stout or medium, short, small or large, omitting none;

Dih v ye ca adih ye ca dre vasanti avidre

Bht va sambhavesv sabbe satt bhavantu sukhitatt. The seen or the unseen, those living near and faraway,

Those born or to be born, may all beings be happy.

Na paro para nikubbetha ntimaetha katthaci na kici

    Byro san paghasa na-maassa dukkhamiccheyya.

Let none deceive another, nor despise any person in any state.

Let none through anger or ill-will wish harm upon another.

Mt yath niya putta- yus eka puttam-anurakkhe

Evam pi sabba bhtesu mnasam bhvaye aparimna.Just as a mother protects with her life her child, her only child,

Even so, with a boundless heart, one should cultivate love for all beings.

Metta ca sabba lokasmi mnasa bhvaye aparimna

Uddha adho ca tiriya ca asambdha avera asapatta.

Radiating loving-kindness over the entire world, spreading upward to the skies and

downward to the depths; outward and unbounded, free from hatred and ill-will.

Tiha cara nisinno v sayno v yva tassa vigata middho

Eta sati adhiheyya brahmameta vihra idhamhu.Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down, as long as he is awake,

One should establish this mindfulness. This is said to be the Brahma living here.

Dihi ca anupagamma slav dassanena sampanno

Kmesu vineyya gedha na hi jtu gabbha seyya punaret ti.

By not holding to wrong views, [but] being virtuous and having clarity of insight,

Being free from sense desires, he is not born again into this world.

Karaya-metta-sutta nitthitaThe End of the Discourse of Loving-kindness.

(Translation revised by Phra Dr. Khammai Dhammasami, based on five earlier versions

namely from Nyanamoli, Buddharakkhita Mahathera, Piyadassi Mahathera,

the Amaravati Monastery in the UK and Thanissaro Bhikkhu.)
