TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we’ve been hearing these weeks come from the

very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry

of Jesus in its infancy. Today’s account shows some of the strain

or adjustment of his new life of preaching the

reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out

demons. Notice that after sunset, when dark-

ness ended the workday, people brought the

sick and possessed to Jesus.

The following day he rose before dawn

to get away by himself to pray, but to no

avail. Simon Peter and the others don’t just look for him, they

pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited.

With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his

earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose.

Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is tell-

ing us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our

pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the heal-

ing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

On February 11, 1858 the Virgin Mary appeared to

three French children from the small town of Lourdes. There

gushed miraculous waters with the power to heal the sick.

Eventually a sanctuary was built in Lourdes in honor of Our

Lady of Lourdes and millions of sick people have

resorted to healing waters. Many of those who visit

the sanctuary are Latinos, because we Latinos love

miracles and the miraculous. But what is the desire to

see miracles? Can not we believe without them? Do

we need demonstrations of divine power before we

surrender ourselves to God? The Church has always

canonized saints and saints through whose interces-

sion miracles have been manifested, and has sought

its power of intercession. However, he has also in-

sisted that an exemplary life is more important, a life dedicated

to the good of others than a prodigious life. You have to be

very careful, because often in our eagerness to see loud mira-

cles in faraway places, we close our eyes to see the miracles of

the people around us, and who silently help the needy. -Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
