EMPLOYEE DISCIPLINE: Employee discipline According to Richard D.
Calhoon,Discipline is the force that prompts individuals orgroups to observe rules, regulations, standards andprocedures deemed necessary for an organization.
Therefore discipline means securing consistentbehavior in accordance with the accepted norms.Discipline is essential in every aspect of life. It isequally essential in work environment.
Simply stated, discipline means orderliness. Itimplies the absence of chaos, irregularity andconfusion in the behavior of workers.

An o rder ly behavior refers to discip l ine asa cond i t ion that must exis t for order lybehaviors in the organizat ion.
Punishment is used to p reventind iscip l ine. When a wo rker goes astray inhis condu ct , he has to be pun ished for thesame and the recu rrences o f i t must beprevented.

NATURE OF DISCIPLINE:Discipl ine can either be positive or negative:
Positive discipline involves creation of anatmosphere in the organization wherebyemployees willingly conform to the established
rules and regulations. Positive discipline canbe achieved through rewards and effectiveleadership.
Negative Discipline Under negative discipline,penalties are used to force the workers to obey
rules and regulations. In other words, workerstry to adhere to rules and regulations out offear of warnings, penalties and other forms ofpunishment. This approach to discipline iscalled negative or punitive approach.

Symptoms of general indiscipline
Change in the normal behaviors
Absenteeism
Increased grievances
Lack of effective performance
Go slowDisorderly behaviors

CAUSES OF INDISCIPLINE:Unfair Management Pract ices:
Management sometimes indulges in unfairpractices like: Wage discrimination Non-
compliance with promotional policies andtransfer policies Discrimination in allotmentof work Defective handling of grievancesPayment of low wages Delay in payment of
wages Creating low quality work life etc.These unfair management practicesgradually result in indiscipline.

Communication barriers and absence ofhumane approach on the part of superiorsresulting in frustration and indisciplineamong the workers. The managementshould clearly formulate the policiesregarding discipline. These policies shouldbe communicated and the policies should be
consistently followed in the organizations.The management should also be empathetictowards the employees.

CAUSES OF INDISCIPLINE:Inadequate attent ion to personnel Prob lems:
Delay in solving personnel problems developsfrustration among individual workers. The
management should be proactive so that there isno discontent among the workers. It should adopta parental attitude towards its employees.However it should be noted that no relationshipcan continue for long if it is one sided. What I am
implying here is that the workers should also liveup to their commitments. They should bereasonable in their demands.
