ISSUE: The Quarterly Discipline Report fulfills the reporting requirements of Consent Decree paragraph 88 regarding discipline imposed and the determination of disciplinary actions. The report places this information in context by also providing data on the number and source of complaints, the number and type of allegations made, and the disposition of allegations.

BACKGROUND: Disciplinary action is taken against employees, sworn or civilian, who are shown to have violated Department policies regarding misconduct or failure to perform the duties of their positions. The disciplinary process begins with a complaint. Complaints may be made by members of the public, or may originate within the Department. They can include various allegations against one or more employees. Complaint allegations are investigated todetermine their validity. Recommended findings are made by the accused employee’scommanding officer. The type and severity of discipline imposed varies according to the nature of the sustained allegations and the accused employee’s work history and disciplinary record. The Chief of Police makes the final determination of discipline imposed.
