Weather Forecast Synoptic Situation: Monsoon axis runs through Rajasthan, Hariyana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and thence northeastwards to Assam across Central part of Bangladesh. One of its associated trough extends to Northwest Bay. Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate elsewhere over North Bay. Forecast: Light to moderate rain/T. showers accompanied by tempo. gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi, Rangpur and Dhaka divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places. Flood Outlook

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna, The Ganges-Padma and the upper Meghna river systems are in falling trend which may continue during next 24 hours

The Jamuna at Bhadurabad is in flowing above its respective danger level by 17 cm recorded today at 06.00 AM.

The Surma at Sunamganj, the Kangsha at Jariajanjail & Lakhya at Narayanganj are flowing above their respective danger level by 11 cm, 91 cm and 3 cm recorded today at 06.00 AM.

The flood situation in Sunamganj, Jamalpur, Netrokona & Narayangonj may likely to improve in next 24 hours.

2432.01 MT VGF Rice under VGF programme has been allocated to 81,067 families of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban. (30kg monthly each family).

Food grains have allocated for the 10000000 ultra-poor families of 485 upazila and 315 pourashava of the country for upcoming Holy Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Disaster Management and Relief Division allocated 28,841 pcs of tarpaulin, 1735 pcs of plastic sheets, 749 pcs blue-sheets, 2,546 Sharee and 15 sack old cloths to flood affected districts Chittagong, Cox’s bazar, Bandarban, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj, and Jamalpur.

Flood Situation of 1st Phase Flash flood situation and land slide occurred previously in Chittagong, Cox’sbazar, Bandarban, Sylhet and Sunamganj due to continuous rainfall since 24th June 2012, flow of upstream water since 26th and 27th June, 2012. Flood and landslide causes huge damage at Chittagong, Cox’sbazar, Bandarban, Sylhet and Sunamganj districts where 125 people died (Chittagong-37, Cox’sbazar-47, Bandarban-38, Sylhet-3). At the same time low land and char areas were flooded due to the increase of water at some points of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Sirajganj and Jamalpur districts. 6 people died in this region (Gaibandha-3, Jamalpur-1, Bogra-1 and Sirajganj-1). As water receded, flood situation got normal.

District wise Flood Situation of newly flooded areas

At some points around the country water flowing over the danger level due to the rainfall and upstream water since 15/07/2012. As a result some areas of some districts are flooded again. Flood Situation in North Region of the Country Nilphamari Tista is flowing 30cm below the danger level. Water is receding and situation is improving. 2348 families from 6 upazillas of Dimla and 1 from Jaldhaka are affected due to the upstream water. In addition 152 families are affected due to the erosion of the river Tista. 27 MT GR rice are allocated to distribute among the affected people.

Lalmonirhat Water level of the river Tista increased but still flowing 30cm below the danger level. 23947 families of 18 unions of Sadar, Patgram, Hatibandha, Aditmari and Kaliganj upazilla are affected due to the upstream water and heavy rainfall. Meeting of Disaster Management Committee has been called. District administration is already directed to distribute dry food to affected people. Already 83.500MT GR rice and 100000 taka have been distributed to the affected people.

Rangpur All the rivers are flowing below the danger level. Low land areas of Gongachara, Pirgacha and kaunia upazillas are inundated due to the rainfall of last few days. But water is receding as rainfall decreased. 37 MT GR rice have been allocated to those two Upazillas.

Kurigram All the rivers including Dharala is flowing below the danger level. Low land and Char areas of Rajibpur, Nageshwri, Chilmari, Roumari and other 9 unions are flooded and water logged due to the upstream water and heavy rainfall for last few days. 146262 families are affected. Total 416 families have taken shelter into 5 shelters. Dharala is flowing below the danger level. District administration allocated 1610.700 MT GR rice and 500000 Taka to distribute among the affected people of those Upazillas.

Gaibandha 47120 families from 25 unions of Sadar, Fulchari, Saghata, and Sundarganj upazillas are affected due to the inundation by heavy rainfall and upstream water for last few days. Brohmmoputra is flowing 3cm above the danger level Ghaghot is flowing 2cm above the danger level. A child drowned and died on 19-07-2012. 80MT GR rice and 400000 taka has been sub allocated to those upazillas.

Bogra The Jamuna is flowing 16cm above the danger level. As a result 17750 families of 9 unions of Sariakandi upazila have been affected. 10 Medical teams are working in these areas. 123.280 MT GR Rice have allocated by District administration.

Jamalpur Jamuna is flowing 26cm above the danger level. Low land areas of Islampur and Deoanganj upazilla flooded again due to the heavy rainfall and upstream water. As a result 4200 families of Islampur and 700 famies of Deanganj have been affected. 20MT GR rice and 70000 have been allocated. Situation is under observation.

Flash Flood Situation in North-East Region of the Country

Sylhet: Water level of the main rivers of the district is decreasing and flowing below the danger level. As primary information, 9 unions of Goainghat and 6 unions of Companyganj are inundated. Water receding from inundated areas. Situation is improving. 40 MT GR Rice have allocated by District Administration to these two Upazilas.

Sunamganj The Surma is flowing 21cm above the danger level due to the continuous rainfall and upstream water last few days. As a result 50000 people are affected from 36 unions of Sadar, Doarabazar, Bisomvorpur, Tahirpur, Dhormopasha and chattak and from 3 wards of Sunamganj pourashava. Though 50 shelters opened but at present 4 families staying at one shelter. 142 MT GR Rice and BDT 400000 GR Cash have allocated the affected upazila by the District Administration. Relief activity is continuing.

Netrokona Situation is improving as water started receding. 20 MT GR Rice have been allocated for distribution to affected people. District and Upazila administration have taken necessary action to combat upcoming flood.

Flash Flood and Hill slide Situation in South-East Region of the Country

Chittagong It is raining since morning today. But no damage has been reported yet. Flood Water started receding from the affected upzailas and 41 words of City Corporation. As a result situation is improving. 167801 families have been affected. 3 persons at Fatikchari upazila and 1 person at Banshkhali upazila reported death.

Cox’s bazar Ramu upazilla is flooded again due to heavy rainfall and upstream water. Embankment breached at various points of Teknaf and Pekua. Salt water is entering inside through those points. If the fixing of the embankment delayed, the inundation may be permanent and thus there will be extensive damage of crops. And improvement of flood situation will be delayed due to the entrance of sea water. District administration send letter to water development board to repair the breaches of the embankments. 205MT GR rice and 315 sacks of flattened rice, 200pcs shari, 100pc lungi, 140 pc molasses have been distributed among the inundated families. 192 families are getting free food under VGF. 4 people’s death is reported at Chakoria Upazilla. Things to Do in Flood [English version]

Pre Flood

Decide a place where you will take shelter and move your properties.

Decide what to do to protect cattle and valuable properties.

Keep stock of puffed and flattened rice and molasses.

Keep communications with Disaster Management Committee and volunteers and seek for their advice and help.

During Flood

If any household inundated, take space in nearest highland, embankment or shelter.

Drink water from tubewell. If tubewell is not available, in that case drink boiled water or use water purification tablet or fitkiri.

Know the location of the nearest medical team around your location and ask for help if required.

Keep the cap of bottle containing of carbolic acid open. Place pieces of soap mixed with carbolic acid in different places of home. This will prevent snakes to enter into the house.

Help government and non-government relief distributing agency.

Communicate with Disaster Management Committees of flood affected villages to form volunteer team to keep your area and property safe.

Keep the crop seed in safe and dry place.

Prevent fishes to wash way from flooded ponds by putting tree branches on the pond water surface.

After Flood

Return to own home as soon as water recedes and prepare the household to live.

Start cultivating in your own land. Take help from agriculture officers to cultivate such crop that can be produced in shortest possible time.

Many diseases (like typhoid, Diarrhea, dysentery) may spread out after flood, so take preparation with proper medication. Take vaccine or injections as required.

Contact with Up Chairman and members or volunteers to rebuild damaged household if required.

After water recedes check and take out all the fishes. Then apply 1 kg calcium hydroxide (locally known as chun)

Aman paddy can be sowed taken from a land that has not been inundated.
