My Dear Parishioners,

I so miss seeing your smiling faces and hearing your worshipful voices lifted up in prayer and yet I know we are united in the Spirit of God in one heart each day! Having Mass broadcast on Face-book and on our parish website each day has been my attempt to keep in touch with as many of you as possible! In the current climate I cannot even visit the local hospital. Last week, an ICU nurse put her cell phone up to a dying patient’s ear so I could pray with him remotely. All of this is so foreign and strange and in our own ways, we are being called to be courageous and faithful in the midst of uncertainty and fear!

On Tuesday of this week, all pastors and business managers had a webinar with Archbishop Go-mez. He reiterated some of what is already known to us. Here are some of the bullets from our meeting and a few other words of information:

• Masses are suspended until further notice and church buildings are closed as well.• Archbishop Gomez has asked that all who would like to make a confession during this Lenten

Season should make a good act of contrition and when the present situation passes, come to church to confess individually. We priests were asked to suspend all confessions in or outside of the church except in cases of emergency.

• Wedding and funerals are also suspended for the time being. Gravesides are being permitted • presently. Catholic cemeteries are allowing up to 10 people total at graveside. I had a service

at a non-Catholic cemetery on Wednesday where only 3 family members and the presider were permitted.

• Though the office is closed for the next several weeks, emergency services are available. If you know of anyone who needs a bag of groceries, please contact the office and we will make non-perishable food items available!

• I am also here each day. If you are experiencing heightened anxiety or need to speak with me for any reason please leave a message at 805-498-3602 (ext 101) and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

• Sadly, we know that Holy Week services are cancelled but we will celebrate them here with the few ministers allowed and they will be available on our website!

• Our income has dropped dramatically. If you have not been hit financially by the shutdown of businesses, please help us by registering for online giving or by dropping off your donation in the mail slot at the church office.

There are many wonderful opportunities for prayer and “stretching” your faith by going on line. Each day I find several great retreat talks and reflections on YouTube. Bishop Barron’s “Word on Fire” ministry has several resources. EWTN and Relevant Radio have 24 hour programming that may fill in the gaps of discouragement and anxiety!

Please let ME know how I can better serve you during these difficult days! You are each in my prayers every day and I know I can count on yours as well!

Peace in the midst of it all!Father Paul

Question of the Week

Next Week’s Readings

SAINT POLYCARP (died 155)February 23“Eighty-six years I have served Christ, and he never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and Savior?” Boldly answering the official who de-manded he worship pagan gods, Polycarp, today’s “Senior Citizen Saint,” demonstrates that cour-age, far from being the preserve of the young, is a virtue cultivat-ed through lifelong fidelity and crowned by final perseverance. A disciple of Saint John, who is said to have consecrated him bishop of Smyrna in modern-day Turkey, Polycarp witnesses to the truth that, whatever time and space may separate us, Jesus’ gift of the Eucharist unites us. Polycarp’s final words, preserved by the Church of Smyrna, sound like a Eucharistic Prayer in which the saint offers himself: “Lord, almighty God, Father of your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have come to the knowledge of yourself . . . may I be received among the martyrs as a rich and pleasing sacrifice . . . through the eternal priest of heaven, Jesus Christ . . . through him be glory to you, together with him and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.”

Lord Jesus,You traveled through towns and villagescuring every disease and illness among the people. At your command, the sick were made well.Come to our aid now in this health crisis so that we may know your healing love. Heal those who are sick: may they regain their health and strength.Heal us from our fear, which prevents us from helping one another.Heal us from our pride, which makes us certain of our health and life apart from you. Bless health care professionals with strength and compassion as they selflessly respond to our needs. We make this prayer in your strong and holy name,You, who with the Father and Spirit, live and reign for ever and ever.

Amen.

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe,Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Ameri-cas. We fly to you today as your beloved chil-dren.We ask you to intercede for us with your Son,as you did at the wedding in Cana.Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this ill-ness.For those already afflicted,we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one an-other and to bepatient and kind.Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and toour hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassion-ate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.Shelter us under the mantle of your protec-tion, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
