DECALCIFICATION CHARGE GUIDELINE:4 Decalcification may be required on specimens that contain bone in order to properly process the tissue. Decalcification is a chemical process that softens the bone & can take anywhere from 2 to 10 days (rarely more) depending on the density & size of the bone. If you are unsure if a biopsy specimen will require decalcification, please contact the laboratory to discuss the case. Not all samples that contain bone necessarily need evaluation of the bony component to render a diagnosis. Animal Reference Pathology makes every attempt to perform decalcification only when necessary in order to ensure the most accurate interpretation of the disease process.

MARGIN EVALUATION:4 Standard margin evaluation via the cross sectional or radial technique is performed on all relevant cases. More extensive margin evaluation (serial sectioning technique or orange peel technique) may be best for some types of surgical biopsy specimens & incur an additional fee. If you are unsure what technique is best suited for a specific biopsy specimen, call the laboratory to discuss the case with a pathologist.

LARGE SPECIMEN SURCHARGES:4 If the specimen cannot fit in a 90mL specimen container (the standard container we provide free of charge) it may be assessed a large specimen surcharge. Just as some surgeries are more complex & challenging, handling larger biopsy specimens requires additional time, supplies, expertise & shipping costs.

MICROBIOLOGY NOTES:4 Samples submitted to Animal Reference Pathology for culture are streaked/plated & incubated for growth as soon after specimen arrival as humanly possible. Samples that yield bacterial growth are then analyzed via cutting edge technology by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) at the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (UVDL) [or other partner laboratory with similar equipment] for microbial identification. Antimicrobial sensitivity is also performed at the UVDL [or other partner laboratory with similar equipment] via sensititre.

SHIPPING CHARGES:4 For clients sending samples to ARP via ARP’s FedEx account, the total value of testing in one shipment must be equal to or greater than $50. For those packages with the value of testing below $50, a $10 shipping fee will be assessed. Shipping is not included for test 1650 Plasma Free Metanephrines. For clients in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, there is no additional fee for courier services.
