Type of Services: Break the Cycle's Legal Services Program provides early intervention services, including free legal advice, counsel and representation, to hundreds of young people, ages 12 to 22. These legal services are provided in English and Spanish and are designed to provide clients with important information and tools by informing them of their options, allowing them to decide what course of action is best for them, and then guiding and supporting them through that process. Break the Cycle's staff attorneys assist clients in filing for and obtaining temporary restraining orders and provide full representation to clients at hearings for permanent restraining orders and other domestic violence-related family law court proceedings such as custody, divorce, and child support matters.

Type of Services: Community Tax Aid, Inc. is a full-service, not-for-profit Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic whose volunteers offer free help with income taxes to people with low incomes. Services include help with federal and state returns, other states, prior years, offers in compromise and Tax Court representation.

Intake Hours: Call anytime year-round, 24/7; leave a message and someone will get back to you. There are 12 walk-in service locations (no appointments needed) in D.C., MD, and VA on weekends and evenings from early Feb. through April 15th – call or see website during tax season for locations and times.

Type of Services: D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program sponsors walk-in clinics on the second Saturday of every month from 10:00 am until noon at two locations (see above). Individuals with civil legal matters governed by D.C. law receive valuable legal advice from volunteer lawyers. Eligible individuals may be referred to one of the other D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program Clinics or to another legal or social services agency if their matter warrants further advocacy. Case types include bankruptcy/debt collection, civil rights, employment, family law, health law, housing law, immigration/asylum, personal injury, probate, public benefits, and tax matters.

Type of Services: Workers’ Rights Clinics offer advice and referral services to low-income workers in all employment-related cases (DC, MD, and VA employers), including unpaid wages, overtime, unemployment compensation, sexual harassment, wrongful termination, discrimination, criminal records sealing and expungement, workers’ compensation, family and medical leave, and pension benefits. The clinic is designed to be a self-help advice and referral clinic. Representation is available in only a small number of cases.

Type of Services: The Family Court Self-Help Center Pilot Project is a free source of information for unrepresented individuals with questions about D.C. family law matters such as divorce, custody, paternity, child support or domestic violence.

We serve people who do not have lawyers, and who have questions about D.C. family law issues or who are currently involved in a family law matter in the Family Court of the D.C. Superior Court. No appointment is necessary. There are no income restrictions.
