Executive SummaryThe Greater Richmond Partnership, Inc. is a regional, public-private economic development organization representing the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico and the city of Richmond, Virginia. The Partnership provides free, confidential site location assistance to domestic and international companies planning new or expanding facilities. In support of this effort, the partnership maintains a list of internationally owned firms located in the Greater Richmond area.

HistoryGreater Richmond has been a favorable location for foreign companies and international commerce for 400 years. Virginia was settled by the Virginia Company, a for-profit entity established by the British government. Richmond’s future location at the falls of the James River was noted in 1607 and the city was founded in 1737 to serve as a central marketplace and collection point for Virginia exports to England.

AnalysisAs of March 2014, there were 150 internationally owned companies representing 27 coun-tries with operations in the Richmond metropolitan statistical area. Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan have the most parent companies in the area. Because some firms have more than one subsidiary and/or more than one physical location, the internationally owned firms have nearly 170 facilities in the area. These facilities employ more than 17,500 workers and provide a wide range of products and services.

Machinery manufacturing and distribution are the largest industrial sectors for the area’s foreign affiliated firms. Specific products include turbines, generators, pumps, and a wide variety of special industrial machinery. Chemicals and related products are manufactured in the area and include pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals, silicone compounds and inks. The electrical and electronic equipment industry is also well represented and includes electrical connectors and other components. Building materials, food and tobacco products, medical equipment, optical goods and musical instruments are also produced and distrib-uted by the area’s foreign affiliated firms.

Services provided by local internationally owned firms include ocean freight transportation and freight forwarding, as well as financing, insurance, personnel, security, information technology and consulting services.
