The Directory of Hospitals

A national network of selected hospitalsAs an AXA PPP healthcare member, you have access to a national network of hospitals, day-patientunits, scanning centres and other private healthcare facilities. These have been selected following acomprehensive assessment of their quality, value and range of services.All of them are listed in our Directory of Hospitals.

Oral surgery If you need oral surgery, then we’ll provide benefit for those oral surgical procedures that are set outin your membership handbook, when your dentist refers you directly to a facility indicated by the symbol in our Directory of Hospitals. Cataract Surgery If you need an eye operation involving cataract surgery, then we’ll provide benefit when your generalpractitioner refers you directly to one of the facilities indicated by the symbol in our Directory ofHospitals. As we increase the number of these arrangements across the country we’ll provideupdated information on our website. Our quality assessment and improvement programmeOur initial assessment covers most aspects of the hospital’s services. We select hospitals and otherfacilities for inclusion in our network if they meet and continue to meet our strict quality criteria. We’re committed to supporting the hospitals included in our network, encouraging them to invest innew facilities and services – to our mutual long-term benefit.We regularly monitor their performance to assess their quality of care, which is why your feedback isparticularly important.If you need to use a facility, please complete your hospital’s ‘patient satisfaction survey’ form andreturn it to them.

Standards for specialised servicesWe also work closely with network hospitals that provide certain specialised care services such as cancer,cardiac revascularisation, critical care, paediatrics and psychiatric care. National guidelines for thesehave been established in conjunction with appropriate professional authorities and organisations.

The benefits of our network hospitalsBeing treated in advanced medical facilities in a supportive, professional environment can play animportant role in helping patients to recover. The hospitals included in our Directory of Hospitals willendeavour to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible.You can usually have your own private room with en-suite bathroom, television and telephone. You’llbe given a choice of dishes for each course at mealtimes and your visitors may, within reason, comeand go as they wish.

Day-patient treatmentAdvances in medical care mean that many operations are now undertaken on a day-patient basis.This is in keeping with good clinical practice. Please note that you may be cared for in an open dayward (rather than a single room) while you recover from an anaesthetic to enable nursing staff tomonitor your progress more effectively. Most hospitals now offer day-patient treatment and we haveincluded a number of purpose-built day-patient units in the Directory of Hospitals.

This is then followedby a list of the hospitals, scanning centres and other facilities with one or more symbols shownagainst the name of each facility listed. Each entry shows the medical service available,arranged alphabetically by town and ordered in reference to the eleven areas shown onthe map. A triangle (∆) indicates an NHS hospital thatdoes not have dedicated private patientfacilities. (We will recognise an NHS bednominated as a private bed but in such casesthe level of accommodation may be the sameas standard NHS accommodation.)

Scanning centres – these centres provide:

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)A diamond ( ) indicates that the centre hasan open MRI scanner.

CT (computerised tomography)

PET (positron emission tomography)

These are usually carried out on an out-patientbasis. Only the centres listed can be used forout-patient scanning.

General hospitals – acute medical andsurgical hospitals and day-patient unitswhich are recommended byAXA PPP healthcare following our selectionprocess and where you will receive a fullrefund for hospital treatment.

Psychiatric hospitals – hospitals thatspecialise in the treatment of psychiatricillnesses.

Rehabilitation units – units that providespecialist rehabilitation services.
