QUONSET POINT - OPEN HOUSE - KEEL LAYING
Electric Boat, Quonset Point Facility - Open House July 8th, 2017 from 8:00am – 1:30 pm
Keel Laying 10:00am - 11:30am The Electric Boat, Quonset Point Facility will be holding an Open House on July 8th 2017. It will be open to all Quonset Point team members and their families. The QP Leadership Team is in the final planning stages for this event which will include tours and displays around the facility. The Keel Laying for the SSN793 Oregon will begin at approximately 10AM. The ceremony will also be webcast at www.GDEB.com. if you are unable to attend in person. It is rare that we get to share with our families the important work that we perform for our country. In our 40+ year history, we have evolved from light manufacturing, hull cylinder fabrication to the final outfitting of completed submarine modules. It is a suc-cess story worth sharing. You will discover that all departments must come together to support this great facility. No work area is more important than another. It is truly this kind of team effort and a dedicated workforce that has us positioned where we are today. What we do is impressive and awe inspiring. However, none of this is possible without the men and women who dedicate their work lives to manufacture and outfit the best submarines in the world! I hope to see you on July 8th!

Electric Boat continues to make solid progress toward the 2021 construction start of the lead Columbia-class (CLB) submarine. Here is a quick summary of our recent achieve-ments: May: We just completed a comprehensive design review during which our U.S. Navy customer scrutinized all as-pects of our design progress. This was a huge effort that re-quired collaboration by our entire team, including the Navy, and I want to thank everyone for their support. April: 56 missile tubes are under con-tract for construction for both U.S. and UK Common Missile Compartments. We will receive the first tube to start outfitting in the new Quonset Point fa-cility this summer. In addition to deliv-ery of fully outfitted missile tubes, mul-tiple UK kits will be built at Quonset Point for use on the Royal Navy’s Dreadnought Class. The first UK kit started construction at Quonset Point for shipment in the third quarter of this year. March: We recovered the schedule “back to baseline” for issuance of de-sign disclosures (drawings). Disclosures had been late-to-plan due to training issues for the new process, which uses the new Integrated Product Develop-ment Environment to release electronic-design products. This was a huge step to regain our credibility with the cus-tomer and required a monumental effort by all involved. We also received NAVSEA approval of the arrangements in the U.S. / UK Common Missile Compartment. Comple-tion of the 3D design arrangements is a critical milestone, because it enables design disclosure development to proceed with low risk for costly rework. Development of the mature design, in turn, results in a risk-reduced construction start at both the U.S. and UK shipyards.
January: The CLB-class Program achieved Milestone B approval, reflecting the mature state of design, component and program development. This milestone authorizes the program to proceed through detail design and construction of the lead ship. 2016: Year-end accomplishments included development of the ship arrangements to 60 percent, and Design Disclosures to 11 percent. A non-shipboard prototype was completed in November, which supported testing and validation of the
IPDE processes and tools. Other prototypes are under way, including shipboard hardware, further demonstrating design-build processes and facility upgrades. A major In-Progress Review was held in October for Frank Kendall, undersecre-tary of defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, during which he noted the high level of program achieve-ment toward Milestone B. And most importantly, the first steel was cut for the lead CLB ship in August 2016, and we are excited to continue manufacturing into 2017.

ECSA NEWS - BOOKS GIVE YOU WINGS / BLOOD DRIVE
2017 Children’s Book Drive = SUCCESS!!!
May 8 – June 2, 2017 Once again Quonset Point em-ployees showed why we’re a TEAM and when challenged will rise to any occasion to sup-port a worthy cause. Quonset Point in collaboration with the United Way RI just concluded the sixth annual Chil-dren’s Book Drive named “Books give u Wings” to en-gage local businesses, communi-ty organizations, individuals and families to help foster a love of
reading while encouraging chil-dren to build their own libraries at home. Amazingly, the final collection here at QP was a very generous 1,500 books collected. Thank you to all who contribut-ed with gratitude to the generous anonymous family who donated ( 1,000 books ) on the last day of the drive !!
Special THANK YOU to our team behind the scenes: Miriam Eldridge, Jackie Christensen, Kerri Simonelli and Patricia Roy who all pitched in to organized and collect the books.
Fellow QP Team Members,
As told in last week’s WIB our recent blood drive resulted in close to
300 people turning out with 286 able to donate blood. Donations at
QP can increase. Lives are saved and second chances are made possi-
ble by the generosity of blood donors. This is where you come in. We
all can agree with 3,600 people employed at QP our numbers should
be higher. Lives are depending on us. If you’ve never donated please
consider joining at the next drive. Our participation as a TEAM here
at QP has made a world of difference. Reach out to our co-workers
and let’s get involved to reach our next drive’s goal of 400 donations.
Here at Quonset Point every donation counts, even if it’s your first
one. We’ve identified a select group of personnel who are your co-
workers who have worked at Quonset over the years that have been
identified as our highest donors. To be more exact, this is a group of
our TOP 40 donors all-time out of 20,000+ employees who have
worked at QP since the doors opened in 1974.
Here are some continued reasons why your co-workers, some of our
TOP 40 have given so much over the years:
“ I continue to give because it’s the one little thing in life I can do to
help others. It feels good to know that a part of me can help to keep
someone alive. It’s not bad to donate; a small pinch can be a lifesav-
er” . Mike Graichen / D912 2nd Shift
“ I was involved in a motorcycle accident in which I needed 14 pints
of blood. My body only contains 14 pints of blood. I will be giving
back for the rest of my life. Give it a try; it’s really easy to do.”
Ronald Kingsborough / D915 3rd Shift
“When I donate I get to help someone and in the process I feel good
about myself. It’s easy, it’s fast and if you do it at the EB blood drive
you are actually getting paid to donate. I chose to donate with a pur-
pose. The son of someone my father worked with was diagnosed with
Leukemia and needed platelets. I was 18 and went with my dad to
donate. The son was only a few years older than me. It seemed like a
small sacrifice to help in a major way.” Stuart Browning / D924
2nd Shift
“Blood has to come from someone, it cannot be made. It makes me
feel good that I’m helping people fighting for their lives.. It’s all
about the first time, if you can do it will be easy thereafter and guar-
anteed you’ll feel good about yourself. I also have family reasons
why I donate. It started for me a long time ago when my close neigh-
bor got into an accident and needed blood. Also, my brother had
Hodgkin’s and needed quite a bit of transfusions and my sister had
Leukemia. They both passed but I still give because other people
depend on me.” Aldo Manzi / D921 1st Shift
“I give because it’s the gift of life. Please, try it once here at work and
you’ll be hooked. The blood center nurses are so good and it’s pain-
less.” Stu Besser / D902 1st Shift
THEY NEED YOU !
Next Blood Drive: Tues/Wed, July 11 & 12.
