Course Overview

Aims & Objectives

Directional Drilling is one of the most fascinating subject areas in the oilfield – with high tech tools able to

drill into the smallest of targets great distances from the rig.

The course learning outcomes are:-

To enable delegates to understand why points on the Earth (e.g. Geographic North, Magnetic North,

Latitude & Longitude, UTM co-ordinates) have been referenced as they have;

To enable delegates to understand why certain survey tools reference certain points of reference (e.g.

magnetic tools / MWD, gyroscopic tools, inertial navigational tools etc.) and how positional calculations

are carried out;

To e a le delegates to k o hat goes o i side la k o soft are sur e progra s; To learn why – and how – directional wells are designed as they are: Vertical, KOP, Tangential Section,

Horizontal & Multi-lateral;

The tools used for directional, horizontal and multi-lateral drilli g a d ho the are used, e.g. PDM s, turbines, rotary steerable systems, whip-stocks etc.;

How the Directional Drillers & MWD Engineers drill from the vertical to the target(s) selected by the

Operators su -surface groups. Tool Face, High Side, Inclination, Azimuth, Measured Depth & TVD.

The following media are used during the course:-

1) Lectures (the Trainer began his career 35 years ago as a Drilling Engineer and has designed and been

involved with hundreds of directional wells worldwide on land rigs, jack-ups, platforms and semi-

submersibles);

2) PowerPoints (written by the Trainer);

3) Videos & Digital Film

4) Calculations & Manuals

The aims and objectives of the course are for delegates to understand how directional wells are planned

and how the tools used work. We will also go through Minimum Radius of Curvature Programs to

establish wellbore positional uncertainty.

Provision is also made for delegates to discuss any directional aspect of their up-coming wells which are

perti e t to their e plo er s proje ts i order to attai su ess ot just first ti e – but every time.

DAY ONE

THE EARTH

.

The Earth’s Magnetic North Pole is in North East Canada and Varies in Position

SURVEYING

During this introductory session you will gain an understanding

of why we survey oil and gas wells, how we reference various

points on the Earth and variations – such as magnetic variations

for example. We will cover the following subject areas:-

Why Survey?

Models of the Earth

The Geoid

The Spheroid

Grid Systems

Universal Transverse Mercator Grid (UTM)

Lambert Conformal Conic Projection

Other Grids

Magnetic Declination

Mapping Grids

SURVEYING TOOLS

There are a variety of surveying tools for a variety of purposes,

and in some parts of the world (e.g. on low day-rate land rigs for

example) old Tot o s, Single Shots and Steering Tools are still run.

At the other end of the spectrum, very high accuracy inertial

navigation systems are run, similar in spatial accuracy to modern

day aircraft systems. In this section we will cover the following

subject areas:-

Tool Selection Factors

Magnetic Tools

Photographic Magnetic Survey Tools

Magnetic Single Shot

Magnetic Single Shot Reading 5 ½ Deg. Inclination

South 36 West Azimuth (Raw)
