DIRECTORS NOTES By the early 1950's, when Witness for the Prosecution takes place, women solicitors were slowly taking their place as part of the justice system. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was a barrister during this time. But, true to the times, the role of Mayhew has traditionally been played by a male actor. However, I have chosen to partner Sir Wilfred with a woman solicitor, Mrs. Mayhew, to second him in court. With the rising role of women in law and politics, Mrs. Mayhew becomes a vital part of the defense team -- especially in dealing with defendant Leonard Vole's charm and the maneuverings of his enigmatic wife, Romaine Vole. Let the games begin.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Agatha Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time, her works being outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. Best known for her detective novels and short story collections, she penned the world’s longest running play – The Mousetrap in 1952, still running today on London’s West End after 25,000 performances. In 1955 she became the first recipient of the Grand Master Award, the Mystery Writer’s of America’s highest honor and that same year Witness for the Prosecution received their Edgar Award for Best Play. Most of her books and short stories have been adapted for television, radio, video games and comics, and more than thirty feature films have been based on her work.
