Why learn about File Management on a Photoshop course?

THE IMPORTANCE OF FILE MANAGEMENT

• Without good file management you risk losing or accidentally deleting an image!

• Tracking existing images becomes a cumbersome, boring task.

• Good workflow frees up your time so you can do more fun things, like getting out and making photographs or spending time being creative in Photoshop.

WHAT FOLDER STRUCTURE SHOULD WE USE?

• Use letters from A-Z, a-z.

• Numbers 0-9.

• Only use hyphens and underscores. Avoid spaces, brackets, symbols, or asterisks etc.

• File names should end in a three letter file extension with period e.g. .CR2, .JPG, .TIF, etc.

• A good way to name them is to incorporate your name, the date of the photo (or the date of import) starting with the year, month, day, and the general subject matter e.g. Pjcahill_20151103_Dublin_0001.CR2

• Avoid incorporating detailed job names or complex descriptions in the file names.

WHAT IS ADOBE BRIDGE

Bridge CC is Adobe’s flagship desktop media browser and powerful digital asset manager (DAM) that allows you to efficiently locate, organise, browse, preview, and batch process your content files.

It is very commonly used with Photoshop for quickly viewing and working with your creative files.

It helps us decide which photos we want to edit and it allows us to perform quality control before we bring pictures into Photoshop – this saves us lots of time.

Bridge is available for separate download from the Creative Cloud (www.adobe.com/creativecloud)

You can install Bridge CC either standalone by itself, or together with other applications like Photoshop CC, or even with Photoshop Elements.
