CONGREGATIO PRO CLERICIS Response to petitions on the

Closure of St. Winefride’s Church “… It appears that there may still be some

confusion as to the status of the former parish

church of St Winefride, so perhaps I could assist

by clarifying the status of the building. It was reduced to secular but not unbecoming use

(cf.can.1222:1). As such, it lost its dedication

(cf.can. 1212) and ceased to be a sacred

building intended for divine worship (cf.can.

1214). An hierarchical recourse against that decree was rejected by this Congregation on 20 April 2013,

and subsequently by the Supreme Tribunal of the

Apostolic Signatura on 9 August 2013. I do

appreciate that has been a painful decision, but the

question is settled and will not be reopened.

Since November 2012, therefore, there has been no parish church in the parish of St Winefride. Having

received your correspondence, this Dicastery was

concerned to ascertain what steps are currently

being taken to resolve this situation. The Diocesan

Bishop has now fully explained his proposals to provide a parish church and I can confirm that this

Congregation is satisfied with those proposals….”
