THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Acts 12.1-11A reading from the Acts of the ApostlesAbout that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.) When he had seized him, he put him in prison and handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel said to him, “Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.” He did so. Then he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening with the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. After they had passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”This is the Word of the Lord, thanks be to God

PSALM 87 (We respond with the bold verses).

On the holy mount stands the city he founded;the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon; Philistia too, and Tyre, with Ethiopia “This one was born there,” they say.And of Zion it shall be said, “This one and that one were born in it”; for the Most High himself will establish it.The Lord records, as he registers the peoples, “This one was born there.” Singers and dancers alike say, “All my springs are in you.”NEW TESTAMENT READING 2 Timothy 4.6-8, 17-18As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. This is the Word of the Lord, thanks be to GodGRADUAL HYMN: Fight the good fight TIS: 594

+ Glory to you Lord Jesus ChristWhen they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.” Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!” This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church: [stand]We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made, of one being with the Father;through him all things were made. For us and for our salvationhe came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

APPOINTMENT OF NEW RECTOR

Bishop Garry has announced that he has appointed Sister Elisa Helen, CSC as the new rector of St Paul’s. Her induction will be held at St Paul’s on Thursday 4th July 2019. Sr Elisa’s first Sunday will be next week, 7th July.

Time to RejoiceI wonder if the Philippians (see scripture below) were a disheartened lot that they needed to be told toremember the Good News of Jesus Christ. And told again and again. Certainly, if we allow ourselves to be bombarded by the Bad News we will have be to be reminded, again and again. Rejoicing isn’t just bells and whistles, parties or even putting on a brave face when your heartis broken. Rejoicing is a growing act. It leads to a deep and inner conviction that the Love of God in Jesus is real and for all.Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4Mothers’ Union members in Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland are rejoicing in Lord judging by the flood of positive response and enthusiastic support to MULOA. On national television in Lesotho the Bad News was shifted aside for a presentatiLet us all rejoice in this Good News.
