Diocesan Services Fund Last weekend we all read a letter from His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo asking us to participate in this years Diocesan Services Fund (DSF). As you all know, every parish in the archdiocese participates in this annual appeal. Our goal here at Christ the Good Shepherd this year is $243,000.00. Do you know what the DSF is? The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is one of the largest social service providers in Texas. The DSF supports 60 + ministries which offers specialized children’s services, scouting programs, support to clergy, housing programs, protective shelters, sacramental preparation, health services, refugee and immigration programs and countless other ministries in need. Our participation in the DSF enables us to impact the lives of thousands and thousands of our archdiocesan brothers and sisters through the evangelizing, healing, nurturing and pastoral ministries of the Church. Some of the many ministries funded by DSF include: the Catholic schools office, Holy Cross Chapel in downtown Houston, the Texas Catholic Herald, on-going formation for adults, adolescents and children, the Office of Worship, Archdiocesan liturgies such as ordinations and Masses for first responders, lawyers and judges, etc, various ministries to the poor, sick and incarcerated including the Catholic Chaplain Corps serving chaplains for all of the Medical Center, Catholic Charities, Correctional Ministries for adults and juveniles, St. Dominic Center for the Deaf, Clergy formation, seminarian formation and recruiting, formation for the permanent diaconate, ethnic ministries, ministries for families and many more. The theme of this year’s DSF campaign is, “Be Rich in Good Works… Ready to Share.” By giving our time, skills and material resources to God, we share the gifts that have been entrusted to our care and deepen our love for our brothers and sisters. Every parish in the archdiocese is asked to participate. It is right that we participate because these ministries are much larger than any one parish could ever support on its own. One of the largest and most exciting ministries supported by the DSF is to the Port of Houston, in particular to the men and women sailors who come in and out of the port every day. The archdiocese has a pastoral center for them to gather, relax, engage in Bible study, get a nice meal and more. Often because of immigration laws sailors are not allowed off of their ships, even after being on them for months at a time. When this happens, chaplains request permission to board the ships with care packages and minister to them on board. Our parish goal is not unreasonable. I sincerely invite you to contribute to the DSF. No contribution is too small. You can also pledge an amount and pay it out throughout the year. Servicios del Fondo Diocesano El fin de semana pasado leímos una carta de Su Eminencia el cardenal de Daniel DiNardo que nos pide participar en esto año del Servicio del Fondo Diocesano (DSF). Como todos ustedes saben, cada parroquia en la archidiócesis participa en esta petición anual. Nuestro objetivo aquí en Crhist the Good Shepherd este año es de $243,000.00.

¿Sabe qué es lo que la DSF? La Archidiócesis de Galveston-Houston es uno de los mayores proveedores de servicios sociales de Texas. El DSF hace posible mas de 60 ministerios especializados que ofrece servicios para los niños, programas, el apoyo al clero, programas de vivienda, refugios de protección, preparación sacramental, los servicios de salud, el derecho de los refugiados y los programas de inmigración y un sinnúmero de otros ministerios. Nuestra participación en la DSF nos permite lograr una repercusión en la vida de miles y miles de nuestros hermanos y hermanas diocesanos a través de la evangelización, la curación, la crianza y ministerios pastorales de la Iglesia. Algunos de los muchos ministerios financiados por DSF son: la oficina de escuelas católicas, Capilla Santa Cruz en el centro de Houston, Texas Catholic Herald, programas de formación permanente de adultos, adolescentes y niños, la oficina de culto, liturgias diocesanas como las ordenaciones y las misas por los paramédicos, los abogados y los jueces, etc., a varios ministerios a los pobres, enfermos y encarcelados como el Capellán católico, Cuerpos de capellanes para todo el Centro Médico, Caridades Católicas, los Ministerios correccionales para adultos y menores, Santo Domingo Centro de sordos, a los sacerdotes, reclutar y formación de seminaristas, formación para el diaconado permanente, ministerios étnicos, los ministerios de la familia y muchos más.

Este año el tema de la campaña es DSF, "sean ricos en Buenas Obras... listo para compartir." Por lo que nuestro tiempo, habilidades y recursos materiales a Dios, compartimos los dones que se han confiado a nuestro cuidado y profundizar nuestro amor por nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Cada una de las parroquias de la arquidiócesis se les pide participar. Es justo que participemos porque estos ministerios son mucho más grandes que cualquier parroquia jamás podría apoyarse por sí solo. Uno de los más grandes y emocionantes de los ministerios apoyados por la DSF del Puerto de Houston, en particular a los hombres y mujeres navegantes que entran y salen del puerto cada día. La arquidiócesis tiene un centro de pastoral para recoger, descansar y participar en estudios de la Biblia, una buena comida y mucho más. A menudo, ya que los marineros no pueden desembarcar de sus buques por las leyes de inmigración, incluso después de estar durante muchos meses en las embarcaciones. Cuando esto sucede, los capellanes solicitan permiso para abordarlos buques con paquetes de ayuda y ofrecen un ministerio a bordo.

Fr. Martino Nguyen has been at the forefront of the fight against child sexual exploitation and trafficking for more than 20 years. He founded the non-profit One Body Village which rescues and rehabilitates child victims in Cambodia, Vietnam and now Malaysia.
