Foreword to 2013 Diocesan Cycle of Prayer

The Diocesan Cycle of Prayer enables all parishes and communities in the United Dioceses to uphold one another in prayer throughout the year. We are always conscious of the strength of prayer in our own lives and circumstances. This circle spreads outwards as we remember before Almighty God the people and the places where we and others gather for worship and for community life – young and old alike – in the service of our neighbours and of the church.

But prayer is about much more than the church and its preoccupations. Prayer is about the world which God has created and which God redeems daily by the infusion of grace and by the actions of people of faith, hope and love interacting with everyone else who shares life on earth with us. These characteristics are outlined by St Paul in 1 Corinthians 13 as being pivotal to the heartbeat of a community which dares to call itself Christian. Christian people need always to turn outwards in their generosity and in their carefulness of others. Improving our internal quality of life simply is not enough, neither was it what we were called by God to do.

I should like all clergy and parishes to use this Cycle of Prayer and through it to connect people to people in ways which, while often invisible, are powerful and binding. I should like once again to thank Canon Mark Gardner for compiling the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer and the members of staff in the Diocesan Office for all of their work in its production.
