And, as the restaurant celebrates its 21st year in 2012, it is offer- ing customers a chance to win a vacation trip for two to Aruba. Chris Tsiros can be found in the kitchen of the restaurant he opened 20 years ago. “We’re a family-owned business, and the owner is always here,” he said. “We start at 6 a.m. making the soups and sauces and make everything from scratch.” Checkerboards is a full-service restaurant that can seat 200 peo- ple, and Tsiros targets families as his main customers. e origi- nal section, with its checkerboard floor, is a great spot for a quick lunch or afternoon snack. ere’s a bar and lounge area with flat- screen televisions if you want to watch a game, and a spacious dining room beyond. After a day running errands, the family can enjoy dinner togeth- er here. e menu features both comfort food - meatloaf, maca- roni and cheese, baked chicken, and baked haddock - and some more unusual entrees like lobster ravioli, pineapple sesame salmon, and grilled steak and portabella salad. Help for the holidays from neighborhood landmark Tsiros works hard to keep the prices reasonable in the face of rising ingredient costs. Most dinner entrees are $11.95 to $18.95, and the same entrees in slightly smaller portions are available at lunch, most $9.95 to $11.95. e children’s menu features meals from $4.95 to $7.95. Checkerboards’ menu also includes a wide variety of hot and cold sandwiches, burgers, calzones and, of course, pizza. Checkerboards has gift cards available if you want to treat someone on your shopping list. e restau- rant also has an extensive catering menu. “We can deliver and set up meals, or you can order and pick up what you need,” Tsiros said. “Everything is homemade, and we can make what you need, even if it isn’t on the catering menu.” On that catering menu are cold cut platters and hot hors d’oeuvres such as stuffed quahogs, beef teriyaki sticks, mini spinach pies, scallops in bacon, stuffed mushrooms and other choices. If you’re looking for entrees, you can order fresh salads, Ital- ian specialties such as lasagna, rigatoni or pasta with meatballs or sausage, calzones, and pizza and the house specialties, includ- ing marinated steak tips, chicken piccata, penne a la vodka with grilled chicken or baked stuffed chicken. To thank customers for their support over the past 20 years, Tsiros will be holding a drawing for a trip to Aruba. Starting Super Bowl Sunday in January, customers dining in the restaurant can write their name and email address on the back of their check. One lucky winner will be chosen a year later, on Super Bowl Sun- day 2013, from all the checks collected this coming year for the trip for two with airfare and accommodations.
