Old Opponents
Today we welcome back Redruth and although I know we are all glad to
see them again whether they have the same opinion is an open matter as
they only just succumbed to the spectre of relegation after a right old battle
to stay up, giving some high flying teams a real battering way down in
Cornwall and also on the road. Still everyone loves a trip to Cornwall and
ours will come later in the season, so lets give them a real home welcome
So 3 weeks in and no wins although a couple of near misses and welcome
plaudits for the style of play. We always knew that this seasons fixtures
were hard and we also knew that with some real quality teams now playing in this league, this
season would be a real test. Hopefully the injury list will shorten and we start to think about
slowly moving back up the league, have faith as they say There’s still a lot more to come from
this youthful group of players. So we can only reflect at this time on chances missed and another
last minute defeat at the hand of the Old Albanian National Team for successive season, ah well
there’s always the Euro Millions lottery to aim for!
The rest of the club is now back up and running with 4 sides being put out last Saturday and
thumping wins over Whitehall, and some other club, meant that the score on aggregate was
firmly in our favour, even with the disappointment being endured over at Henbury by the faithful
and some interesting players already fast becoming another bunch of guys who will be well
remembered. This season we have already included 2 spanish internationals and our latest
addition is in fact a cypriot international with a cult following already brewing in the ranks, all
have promised to knock up a batch of the local food at training night one Thursday soon.
As we gain from players joining we have lost the services of 2 well respected members of the
First XV squad, with both Ed Hack and Sam Caven deciding that the lure of the World Cup was
too much and by the time you read this both will be well on their way, although there is some
doubt over Sam actually getting there given past problems, still a once in a lifetime trip so who
can blame them?
As the season starts the well versed ritual of trying to shake annuals out of all players has still
to started and like hunting game should only be under taken when there’s a ‘R’ in the month.
Still as per last year Rich Cecil has been carrying out the task with great verve and I know he’s
keen to break his own record this season, try not to make it too hard for the ol’ fella please.
I finish on a sad note with one of our playing legends currently in hospital, for those who don’t
know him, John Thorne is a living legend and one of whom I have the utmost respect and I
would not have kept my boyish good looks if he hadn’t been there for me on numerous
occasions. I do hope John is soon well enough to sit in his customary corner of the clubhouse
and I know all of his friends and family will wish the same. Get well soon Thorney, no one’s
looking forward to carrying that lot.
Come on you Dings Boys!

Welcome to Redruth RFC
We extend a warm welcome this afternoon to our visitors Redruth hope that all players, officials
and supporters enjoy their visit to our Lockleaze ground.
In a very tight finish that saw just four points covering six clubs for the final relegation place and
despite a great finish to the season that saw them win three and draw one in their final four
games Redruth were relegated from National League One last season after six seasons.
Promoted in season 2004-05 Redruth enjoyed some success in the National One with their best
finishes third in 08-09 and fourth in 06-07 and on their return to this level Dings will be one of
just five sides still in the league they left six years ago.
One of five new sides in the league this season I expect Redruth to be one of the stronger teams
in this league and not many sides will relish visiting the Recreation Ground, hell fire corner and
that welcoming crowd, almost as intimidating as Lockleaze.
With two home wins, Shellford 33-18 and Launceston 15-13, and a narrow away defeat to
unbeaten Worthing 25-27 they currently sit in fifth place in the league with ten points and
represent very stiff opposition after our stuttering start to the season. However we can take heart
from our last league meeting here at Lockleaze back in 2004 when we won a fine match 39-17,
one of only three defeats they suffered that season and they took their revenge later that season
with a 34-3 win in Cornwall.
Good luck to both sides, may the best team win and all spectators committed or neutral enjoy
entertaining afternoon’s rugby.

So, we’ll kick off all the games this season
at 2.30pm, great idea, perhaps we should
have told the team and then they may have
turned up before the second half began.
Never mind for the second week running
once they got started the spirit showed and
it looked as though we meant it. It was a bit eerie on the top touch that first week
though, the deafening silence from the Bear Pit was overwhelming.
Nonetheless it was good to see some of our old friends back, and some new faces.
If we keep getting injuries at the rate we are accruing them at the moment some of
us ‘Top Touchers’ may just have to dig out our boots.
Anyhow I don’t know if anyone else picked up on it but I was looking at the ‘photos in
the Evening Post of the Gorillas placed around the city. Apparently they have been
auctioned off for charity, nice of Clifton to buy a couple and field them in their pack.
Well, today we see the return of ‘Druth to Holy Landseer. I remember the first time
we played down there and took possession of Hellfire Corner, we were very warmly
welcomed, but talk about biased, it made us look like the court of human rights. I
spend a good amount of time in the Duchy and we are well known, and visits to us
are looked forward to, so let’s disappoint them, with the result anyway. Last week
they beat their nearest neighbours The Cornish All Blacks aka Launceston in the
local derby. The talk of politics this week has been the Parliamentary Boundary
Constituency changes, especially those that affect Cornwall. They looked a Tad
brassed off on the Telly so don’t expect any Entente Cordial from our Celtic cousins
today. All the same here’s to a good game, good banter and a win for the Dings.
Oh and by the way two Scots were talking before the battle of Glencoe and one said
to the other, do you know I could murder a MacDonalds.
