Video Conference Lighting

Providingproperlightingforavideoconferencespaceisimportanttoensuringoptimalimagequality.Herearetheproblemsandsomesuggestedsolutions.

1.Providelightingforthecameraintheproperquantity,qualityandangle.Thelightshouldcomefromananglebetween45°and60°vertical.

Horizontally,lightshouldalsobecastonthefacefromanangleinadditiontofront.Thiswillassurethatminimumshadowsarecreatedintheeyesocketsandunderthenoseandchin.

Theamountoflightfallingonthefaceofthesubjectmeasuredverticallyshouldbe50-75fc.Thequalityoflightcanbeassuredbyusingfluorescentlampsof3500°K(ColorTemperature)withaCRI(ColorRenderingIndex)of82+.Theuseofhighcolortemperaturelamps(5700°Kandhigher)isnotnecessaryforvideocamerasasthestrongbluecomponentmakesmostskintoneslookbad(blue).

2.Provideminimallightingforthescreenormonitorforgoodscreencontrastandimagesharpness.Thewallwherethescreenormonitorislocatedshouldhavereducedillumination.Noreflectedglareshouldappearonthescreenormonitortoinhibitviewing.Thecontrastofthescreentothesurroundingareas(ormonitors)shouldbeto10:1withthedisplaybeingthebrightest.

3.Providelightingforthebackwallandtoalesserextent,thesidewallstobalancethebrightnesswiththerestoftheroom.Doingthiswillpreventthecamerafromirisingonthebackorsidewallsthataretoodarkortoobright.Thiscanallowtoomuchortoolittlelightintothecameraresultingintheappearanceofoverorunderlightingthesubject.Generally,

thewallfinishesandfurnitureshouldbeneutral.Thereflectancevalueofthesecolorsandsurfacesshouldbearound30-40%.Lightlevelratiosfromtheparticipanttothebackwallshouldbewithin3to1whilethesidewallscanbe5to1.Solutions:Toaccomplishtheaboverequireslightfixturesthatprovideawidehorizontalcomponent.TheVTCSeriesfixturefromLutronthatisdesignedforthisuseisarecessed,indirect2x2footwithtwo50Wtwintubelamps.Thisfixtureproducesanasymmetricdistributionthatprovidesalargehorizontalthrowinthreedirections.VerylittlelightisdirectedbehindtheVTCSeriesfixturessotheydonotwashouttheviewingscreenorglareintothecamera.Thetri-directionalperformanceofthisproductofteneliminatestheneedforadditionallightingonbackandsidewalls,sothethirdconsiderationishandledalso.Alightinglayoutexamplehasbeenprovidedonthenextpage.Dual Function and Participant Comfort:TheVTCSeriesisprovidedwithadimmingballastsoyoumayadjustthelightlevelsforoptimumpicturequalityandhavelowlightlevelilluminationforotherconferencingfunctions.Combiningthelowheatoffluorescentlampswithanindirectopticalsystem,theparticipantsintheroomwillhaveoptimumcomfortvisuallyandenvironmentally.
