Festive greetings from the tropics!

We hope our inaugural newsletter was enjoy-ed by all the fellow islanders.

The last quarter has been an exciting one with the construction starting of a dedicated boat maintenance area which will be able to house and service all our vessels under cover.

In addition to this we are extremely excited that works has started on our sustainable bottling plant that will eliminate the importing and discarding of plastic water bottles helping us become more sustainable year on year.

This is a global leading system that will provide our guests with sparkling and mineral water glass bottled for their consumption.

In the next issue we shall give you more details on this area and will have you drinking Desroches’ very own mineral water.

The team have been boosted with a mix of cultural characters to assist with a bumper festive season ahead and we look forward to you welcoming the new comers to our island paradise.

Our Dream Team have compiled and exciting mix of activities for the whole family which will keep you entertained during your stay over this festive season.

Looking forward to spending a truly tropical festive season with you on your own piece of paradise and to those who cannot join us this year wishing you a magical Christmas and memorable new year.

Bluewater News

Our impressive game fishing success has continued all the way through the year with numerous Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Barracuda, Jobfish, Rainbow Runner and Sailfish caught almost on a daily basis.

A recent catch report reads, “Conrad Cooper landed his first Sailfish and many other species on his first morning’s fishing at Desroches.”

As the south easterly wind continues to swing to the north west our Sailfish numbers will increase as we enter into our prime pelagic season.

Flats News

The south easterly trade winds have started to dissipate, which means an exciting new 2012 – 2013 fly fishing season is about to begin. The season will undoubtedly start with a bang as the atolls of St Joseph’s and Poivre have rested over the last four months, during our outer island fly fishing off season.

The guide team did a day of test fishing at St Joseph’s and the Bonefishing was simply out of this world. There were also a great number of Indo-Pacific Permit around which lead to our first Permit of the season being landed. It’s going to be a super Desroches fly fishing season.

Our Kids Haven is starting to take shape and is in the closing stages of completion. The Kids Haven will be an exciting new addition for the Little Islanders over the festive season!

inform of her new contact details.

New additioN to the Fleet

To ensure that our fly fishing guests are well taken care of, we have added a new vessel to our fleet. Flying-Fish, a 30 ft Citation with two 300 Hp 4 stroke engines has just been floated and will be used to transfer our fly fishing guests to and from St Joseph’s and Poivre. She has a large cabin and enjoys a comfortable ride only associated with deep-v hulls. Her outboards allow us to enter the channel at Poivre and get close to the flats at St Joseph’s when transferring our guests to their skiffs for the day.

The Cast-A-Way team filmed a brief clip to give guests a broad understanding of what Desroches fishing has to offer. The footage shows Desroches fantastic bluewater fishing and the pristine Bonefish flats of St Joseph’s.

Desroches is the only place where an angler can fish knowing that their partner is having just as much fun whilst staying in luxury.

Sanjeev, from India, has added balance to our talented Escape team, bringing a wealth of knowledge he gained from the International Vishwaguru School of Yoga, Ved Niketan Dham and Kerala Ayurveda Hospital at Aluva (for those who know their Yoga). Sanjeev practises Panchkarma and Ayurveda massage, and will be our Yoga Instructor.

We have two new Spa Angels... From Bali, Novya joins us from Anantara Maldives, and will be specialising in Thai Massage.

Esther, from India joins us from Taj Majal Maldives with experience from many Taj Hotels around the globe. Ester will be our Spa Supervisor supporting myself in day-to-day management of the Spa, and will be joining Sanjeev in Ayurveda massage.

Our other 2 Spa Angels, have been with us for 6 months now. Keira Maria, from the Seychelles loves doing body massage and facial treatments. Sherell from South Africa specialises in beauty therapies such as facials, manicures, pedicures, waxings, hair styling and make-up, and helps us with bridal preparations for our island weddings.

Escape Spa is delighted to promote the ancient art of yoga. Here you will discover an intimate awareness of the physics of your body in our signature Flow Classes. Beginners learn proper breathing, body mechanics and posture alignment. Advanced students are equally chall-enged holding basic postures longer and moving slowly to develop complete awareness within every transition. This class will help you build strength, stamina, and flexibility.

We are now into our rainy season, which of course makes the gardeners happy!! So the island is looking as lush and tropical as ever. The planting that has been done in our new retreats is growing well, despite the heat and still days we have been experiencing lately, much to the delight of our snorkelling guests.

The erosion on our beach in front of the hotel suites is an ongoing problem. The sea has totally undermined, and dropped’ 4 Coconut Palms this last season, which is such a pity. We are doing our best to find ways to try and reduce the damage as much as possible, but as we are all

aware, controlling our sea is very challenging! Fortunately the beach in front of the restaurant is still as beautiful, and user friendly, as ever. Even the turtles have come to lay their eggs around the pool area lately!

Quite a few of the very large, old Cassurina trees are being felled on the island, and are being replaced with indigenous trees. This leaves a few bare patches while we wait for the new trees to grow,

but it is something that we have to do as the Cassurina trees are not indigenous. These trees are acidic and very messy... their brittle old branches drop, and they ultimately fall when old being a serious hazard, and timeous removal should prevent any possible accidents.

We are looking forward to a busy and Blessed Christmas and New Year on Desroches, and wish the same for all of You who are not joining us on the island.

Besides all the clearing and replanting we have been doing, we are finally experiencing “island Life” the REAL way!

By now I think everyone has heard about our competition, “THE ALPHONSE GOLDEN GRAND SLAM”. We decided that we needed some excitement on the island and Yousef and I planned the “impossible”!! You had to catch 1 Permit, 1 Milk fish, 1 GT, 1 Trigger and a Bonefish all on the same day. The guides said it was impossible but we told everyone about it anyway the very next day one of the Russians did it!!!

The excitement that night in the bar was overwhelming. Mat (the winner) was close to tears and the champagne flowed. We have also designed a polo shirt with the Grand Slam logo on it. ( I will post a picture when we get the finished item). Andrew our guide is now a legend... Guiding someone to the impossible!!

The turtles have been very busy laying eggs and the other morning Richard and Oralee came to call us to help rescue hundreds of babies that had gone up to the light of the houses. We rescued over 300. It was a good lesson for the guests NOT to leave the lights on at night!!!

Our vegetable garden is amazing and has helped us out of some dire situations!!! Latief works tirelessly and produces some amazing vegetables… I have found lots of seeds so we are busy planting and trying to expand so that we no longer need fresh supplies from the mainland.

So that’s a small part of our first month on Alphonse in a nutshell... no sorry coconut shell!!
