New year, new you?Well, if you’re anything like me, the diet was ditched mere days into 2010 and the resolution to get fit went out of the window as soon as the snow started falling and I hibernated in front of the TV with my duvet!

But the time has come to face up to the realisation that the bikini body I’m aiming for is more, well, SuBo than JLo at the moment and it’s only 6 months til my summer holiday…

If you’ve started the decade in the same way, this ‘Health and Wellbeing’ issue of Digs is here to motivate, inspire and inform you to start thinking about the ways in which you can start looking after

yourself in both body, mind and spirit.

Drinking too much, exercising too little, forgetting about your sexual health – it’s all easily done, but the new year really is the perfect time to start thinking about the ways in which we can all look after ourselves a bit more.

Enjoy!

Ruth

Digs Feb. 10 3

Hello & goodbye!Welcome to our new arrivals - enjoy your digs!

Welcome to our Semester Two arrivals! We hope you like Digs and that you settle into your new accommodation and life as a student in Sheffield.

There’s lots of information in the welcome booklet (you can find it in the kitchen in your accommodation) and remember there are lots of people around to ask if you’re not sure – check out p.2 for a list of useful contacts.

Also don’t forget to return your completed inventory form - you can hand it in to any Customer Services reception.

Although the majority of you will continue to live in University accommodation for the rest of the year, we have to say goodbye to those of you who were only living with us in Semester One.

ACS carry out inspections after you’ve left so remember to make sure your room is clean and tidy (hint – if you’ve put posters up on the walls be extra

careful when you take them down so you don’t damage the paint and wash your shower curtain just in case!) We’re sad to see you go and hope you’ve had a great time here.

For all the rest of you, here’s some advance warning of interim inspections: all accommodation will be inspected during March and April.

We don’t want you to get charged unnecessarily, so make sure everything is clean and tidy and remember to report any maintenance requirements promptly.

Beating the homesick blues

After a good few weeks away from university surrounded by your home comforts and old friends, returning to Sheffield after Christmas can be a tough transition and it isn’t unusual to be hit with a bout of homesickness.

You’re not alone as it can take a while to be fully comfortable with living somewhere new. Try to distract yourself by seeing what’s going on in your accommodation and at the Union.

There’s nothing like a spot of fencing or samba drumming to lift your spirits! You can also give Nightline a call (0114 222 8787) if you’re

after a listening ear. If you feel you need

more support, contact your Residential Mentor or the Counselling Service on 0114 222 4134.

Time to chillNow that your exams have finished, it’s an ideal time to recharge your batteries after a few too many late revision sessions at the IC (or post-exam celebratory nights out).

Relaxation doesn’t have to be antisocial - grab a few friends and some DVDs and you have the perfect night in.

Student life can get tiring, a night of dancing at Roar and a 9 o’clock lecture just don’t

mix well, so don’t be afraid of the odd early night.

Sexual healthWith Valentine’s Day coming up, we’ve decided it’s the ideal time to run a sexual health campaign.

Whether you’re in a relationship or not, there is no excuse not to take responsibility for your sexual health.

Look out for a variety of events in week one of term which aim to encourage you to do just that.

Jenni HastingsWelfare Officer

A fun way to fitnessKeeping fit is essential to staying healthy. But exercise doesn’t have to be dull, it can be a great opportunity to meet new people and alleviate some of the stresses of student life.

For a fun way to increased fitness, check out the ‘Give it a little go’ listings on p.12. There are loads of brilliant activities going on every week right on your doorstep, including belly dancing, yoga and ‘Strictly’-style ballroom dance classes! So, what are you waiting for?

Sexual healthThe Union’s Sexual Health campaign, supported by the Resident Support team is kicking off on 8 February.

Throughout the week there’ll be lots of sexual health related stuff going on in the residences and on campus, including free condoms being given out, information sessions and Chlamydia testing.

Sexplored, the student run weekly drop-in service is also being re-launched and will be out in the residences in High Tor at The Edge on 12 Feb at 6pm.

The Sheffield Sexual Health and HIV Clinic based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital offers free, confidential advice, counselling, testing and treatment for STI’s. To find out more, visit www.sth.nhs.uk/services/specialised/7-2-1.php

YOURACCOMMODATION

You’re probably familiar with all the different eatwithUS outlets in the residences and on campus, but did you know they offer great healthy alternatives?

From freshly made soups, to juicy smoothies, there are lots of healthy meals and snacks to choose from and, wherever possible, chefs will always bake, instead of fry food.

Healthy options include granola pots, fresh fruit and freshly squeezed smoothies – so there’s always an alternative to the chocolate machine!

Top Tips for healthier eating

• Get in tune with your tummy – put that fork down when you’re satisfied, not

when you’re stuffed!

• Start the day in a healthy way. Choose a slow burning breakfast, such as porridge which will fill you up ‘til lunch.

• Limit salad toppings – a healthy salad can be ruined with fattening toppings and dressings.

• Make sure you get your five a day. eatwithUS outlets offer a great range of fruit, salads and smoothies to help you on your way.

In a fast-moving and increasingly impersonal world, the University Chaplaincy offers a personal approach.

The Chaplaincy has Chaplains and Religious Advisers from 8 major faiths: Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Pagan and Sikh.

They offer care and support to people of all faiths and none, including opportunities for worship, prayer and spiritual exploration.

Located at 344 Glossop Road (just behind the Union), the Chaplaincy is open Monday to Thursday, 9.30am to 5pm and Friday, 9.30 to 2pm.

They have a Common Room with comfy seats and free tea and coffee. There is also a quiet room where you can go to get away from it all and where different worship services are held throughout the week.

There is always someone around if you have any questions or would like a chat.

Feel free to just pop in!There are two Student Workers at the

Chaplaincy (pictured above). Jenny (aka Jelly) works with postgraduates and Asha works with international students.

They organise socials, from chocolate tasting to Persian dinners. Asha also runs an International Drop-In at The Edge Café on Thursday evenings from 7pm.

To report a maintenance problem (eg: no heating, no hot water, leaking tap),

you should contact the Maintenance Helpdesk on: Visit: www.shef.ac.uk/accommodation/maintenanceform.htmlEmail: [email protected] Call: 0114 222 4488 Once your maintenance job has been attended to, you will receive a blue slip to tell you. Exclusive treat for eatwithUS card holdersLast term Digs was lucky enough to be invited to one of the formal dinners held for eatwithUS card holders in the residences.

We had a great time and met loads of lovely people and ate so much delicious food we could hardly breathe in our posh frocks!

Because they were so successful, the bods at eatwithUS are planning on doing them again, and we can’t wait!

The formal dinners are a great opportunity to get dressed up, meet new people and you get to enjoy a scrumptious three course meal created by the University’s very own Executive Chef, Tracey Carr (pictured below).

Best of all it’s an exclusive treat for being an eatwithUS card holder.

Feeling left out? You can still sign up for an eatwithUS card if you’re in self-catering accommodation and enjoy all the benefits and offers including 10% off the already great value prices in the Dining Rooms.

Here are their plans...

Tapton CDCAs well as planning a fantastic 2010 Ents

programme for all of you Taptonites – the CDC are

also working on other ideas, like a new Top Gear

Night to be given a test run in semester two and a

Girls Night In for all of the Tapton ladieeeessssss.

The CDC are also developing an inter-Community

Treasure Hunt, working with the other three

Communities to make this a HUGE event and

a cheapy cheap Tapton Quasar Trip will also be

running soon.

Tapton has also formed a separate Food Sub-

Committee made up of CDC members and other

Tapton students; this group meet with the Catering

Manager on a regular basis to discuss any issues

or suggestions on Tapton catering.

The Thursday Tapton Film Night with free snacks

will continue and keep a look out for the Prison

Block vs. Posh Block sports competition…coming

soon.

Endcliffe CDCThe Endcliffe CDC represents the largest Student Community of them all and as such, the team are keen to make sure that they provide something great for everyone.

The Ents Team are working closely with the Bar Team to make sure a huge programme of events is on offer for all of you Endcliffers – from the Refreshers Traffic Light Party and St. Patrick’s Day Party to Speed Dating and a massive all-day end-of-year Endcliffe Extravaganza…plus a whole host of regular events. The CDC are also really keen to get Block Freps involved and find out what everyone wants to do and what Block trips they can help you to organise.Recycling, the environment and charity fundraising are big themes too and some of the CDC Reps want to work on events focusing around these issues – March sees EEK Week (Ethical and Environmental Week) hit Endcliffe and the CDC leading on a giant recycled art sculpture event, taking place on the piazza.

City CDCCity CDC want to make sure that Opal 2 Common Room

is utilised fully and developed into a real social hub for

City students. The City CDC are currently planning a

weekly Wii Night in the Common Room, as well as a

monthly Quiz and free food evening.

Loads of City students are talented DJs, so the CDC

would like to showcase this by setting up a regular night

at the Union for these people to perform.

Other suggestions include a trip to the Peak District,

a theatre night and a theme park visit…Easter egg

decorating and an Easter Egg hunt…Speed Dating and a

Battle of the Bands night.

There will be more discounted tickets to Union events…

The CDC will also be continuing to run the bi-monthly

Board Games and Cake Night in Coffee Revolution at

the Union, and the weekly Film Night on Thursday’s in

the Common Room.

Digs Feb. 10 9

One of the big aims of the Communities programme is to provide a diverse programme of activities – so what better way to offer this than by linking up with the fabulous range of Union Societies.

The Students’ Union has just under 200 societies on offer, from Darts and Debating, to Ceilidh and Chocolate Soc.

Many societies have either headed out to the Communities to offer sessions already or will be doing so next term.

So far…

• Sheffield Marrow have run sign-up sessions at Ranmoor and Endcliffe; their sign-up at Endcliffe was the biggest sign-up session this year, with a total of 50 new students signing up as donors!

• Indian Society ran a Diwali celebration in Opal 2 Common Room, with over 54 students from the Communities enjoying the festivities with a free meal!

• Mental Health Awareness ran a stall in The Edge at Endcliffe

• Sheffield University Theatre Company brought their production of ‘Bed’ to The Edge for a weekend in October

• Sheffield Music Players Society held a Christmas Concert at Endcliffe to get everyone in the festive spirit – a whole five different groups from the society took students through a whirlwind of music from improvisational jazz to medleys of musicals Coming Up…

• Archaeology Society are running a film showing up at Endcliffe

• SHRIMPS Improvisational Comedy are running workshops at both Endcliffe and Ranmoor

• PedSoc will be running a Dr. Bike session and demo on the piazza at Endcliffe

• Lemon Fresh are planning a scavenger hunt at Endcliffe

• Cheerleading, Latin and Ballroom and Capoeira will also all be running sessions in the Communities

• Plus, Sheffield Marrow and Mental Health Awareness will also be returning to run even more sessions

If your society would like to run a Communities session, just Email: [email protected]

Stress-busting Sessions go down a treat! The exam period can be a stressful one – so the Communities set up some Exam Stress-Buster Sessions to help you all relax, enjoy a few moments of calm and tackle that revision refreshed and rejuvenated!

Students at Ranmoor and Endcliffe enjoyed 10-minute massage sessions from an experienced tutor, which hopefully served as a well-earned treat and a break from all of that hard work.

If you’ve just arrived in your University accommodation – WELCOME! It’s great to have you here and we’re sure that you’ll have an amazing time!

Depending on where you live, you’re a part of one of the following Student Communities:

• Endcliffe Village • Ranmoor Village • Tapton • City

This is your ‘Home from Home’ - your very own student community and we’re here to fit as much fun as possible into one year, by putting on a massive programme of stuff for you to get involved in, from festivals and parties, to film nights and dance classes.

We’re also here to help you put on your very own events and activities and be a leader amongst your student peers.

As part of your rent, you’ve already paid what we call your Community Contribution and this is what goes to fund the massive Communities programme.

Check out the listings (p.11–15) to see what’s happening and make sure you read the weekly email we send to your university email account, “What’s on in my Community this week?”

As proof that you live in your Student Community, you’ll receive your Community Membership Card – keep this card safe as you’ll need it to gain

access to some events and venues, and also to claim some discounts on offer, for example to claim your free cake at the Board Games and Cake Night bi-monthly.

RESIDENT SUPPORT

Drink safe, be safe, stay safeEveryone knows that too much alcohol is not good for you, but let’s be honest, sometimes that quiet pint turns into an all-nighter and you wake up the next morning with only a vague recollection of the night before.

In most cases, the worst that happens is that you have a massive hangover which can only be cured by water, sleep and a fry up from the Dining Room.

Think about the consequences

For some though, as the memories of the previous night return, so does the realisation that your behaviour was, to put it lightly, undesirable.

Being overfriendly with someone you’ve just met, a drunken argument, lost belongings, vomiting and photographic evidence of it all on Facebook will keep you feeling worse even after your hangover has gone.

For some, drunken behaviour can have more serious consequences: misuse of fire alarm or protection equipment, stealing traffic signs, damaging University property, using offensive and abusive language to staff can, and frequently do, result in disciplinary action.

Support & action

Have no fear, help is at hand – we can’t turn back the clocks but we can give you guidance and support in these situations.

Your Residential Mentors are here to ensure that University accommodation is a pleasant and safe place to live and work and have the authority to carry out disciplinary interviews and issue disciplinary action to students requiring them to:

• Write a letter of apology to the victim

• Sign an undertaking to be of good conduct in the future.

• Pay fines

• Pay costs for damage incurred

• Sign up to volunteering programmes

In more serious cases we will also consider:

• Reporting matters to the Police

• Notifying the offender’s academic department about any incidents and outcomes

• Referring the incident to the University Disciplinary Committee

The outcomes of the disciplinary actions are recorded on your student record and in the most serious cases ACS may even terminate your accommodation contract – something which several students have had to deal with already this year.

Make sure alcohol doesn’t ruin your time in University accommodation

Remember :• Even if you are under the influence of alcohol you are still responsible for your actions.

• Know your limits and when to stopBe considerate of others – both in your accommodation and in the surrounding area.

• Keep your keys and your belongings safe when you are out – don’t leave them unattended even for a minute.

• Pay attention and be alert.

• Don’t accept drinks from strangers and use a Spikey if you’re drinking from a bottle.

• Be aware that alcohol can lower your inhibitions and that beer goggles are not an urban myth, neither are STDs and pregnancy so use a condom.

• Don’t invite strangers back to your accommodation – you will be responsible for their actions.

• Don’t be led by peer pressure.

• Don’t walk home alone – get a taxi or walk with friends using the green routes.

• Be considerate of others.
