Digitized Solutions in Food Traceability Technologies Market Forecast 2014-2024: Opportunities for Mobile Devices & Cloud Computing

5.5.1 Eastern Europe Analyses The Eastern European region will reach $0.25bn in 2014; followed by $0.33 in 2019 and expected

value sales of $0.43bn by 2024.

In recent years, following deregulation of the food industry in many Eastern European nations,

Russia being one of the largest, and the lowering of import trade barriers many private, market-

driven food processing and manufacturing businesses have replaced state-supported entities.

5.5.2 Eastern European Consumers Demand Better Food Quality and Controls On the demand side, an increasingly urban population of Eastern Europe with rising incomes and

changing preferences also demands higher levels of food safety, food quality, and of course better

traceability, as increasingly more food produce is delivered from further and further away.

Changes in the food supply environment in Eastern Europe have accompanied changes in the

food traceability industry. The entry of large, private, often international food manufacturing and

processing businesses into Eastern European markets caused fragmented, local food suppliers to

consolidate.

To meet supply requirements, agribusinesses often prefer to source from lead farmers or farmer

cooperatives or directly from individual farmers. International food companies looking to cut down,

move food production to places where factor costs are lower, for example, Poland, Russia or

Slovakia which presents an enormous opportunity for farmers in those countries.

Commercial food supply chain in Eastern Europe increasingly more often falls back on to the

digitized food traceability solutions, as private local or international food businesses are often

sourcing agricultural produce from farmers or selling products to farmers in accordance with a

profit-seeking business model. The digitized entire system allows then all parties involved tracing

information concerning food stuffs all the way from the food retailer backward to the food producer

much more easily.

6.2.2 Economical Analyses Evaluation of the economical impact that digitized food traceability solutions market provides

globally can be determined by the overall grade and amount of small farmers in less developed

regions and their incomes.

Quantitative and qualitative evaluation can include a variety of indicators to document this.

Key quantifiable indicators that are relevant can measure impact throughout the digitized food

traceability chain that includes production volumes, product quality and net income, distribution of

income among smaller food growers and the distribution of costs associated with risk

management.

These economic indicators can be complemented by additional quantitative measures that assess

the overall viability of the digitized food traceability technologies market, such as market position

and penetration of the food producers and manufacturers using these cloud-based solutions,

profitability as compared to similar non-digitized food traceability chains, and trends in digitally

traced food volume sales and prices.

If the farmer in the developing region has access to the Western, high-income, high-value markets

via digitized food traceability network, then value sales of related products and process upgrading

and collective innovation can be quantified in order to see the economical impact of the digitized

food traceability technologies used. Cloud computing and mobile devices in food traceability

increasingly adapt to ever more demanding food market conditions.

Digitized food traceability market is very prone to technological innovations and opportunities and

this is a critical element when defining the economical impact of the overall global market.

Digitized Solutions in Food Traceability Technologies Market Forecast 2014-2024: Opportunities for Mobile Devices & Cloud Computing

8.8.1 IBM Analyses IBM is an American multinational technology and consulting corporation, with headquarters in

Armonk. The full name is the International Business Machines Corporation. IBM manufactures and

markets computer hardware, software and offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in

areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.

The company was founded in 1911 as the Computing Tabulating Recording Company (CTR)

through a merger of three companies: the Tabulating Machine Company, the International Time

Recording Company and the Computing Scale Company.

In 2012, Fortune magazine ranked IBM the second largest US firm in terms of number of

employees, currently the company employs 435,000 people. Also, in 2012, the company showed a

healthy financial outlook, showing the following results: total revenue $104.5bn, operating income

$21.9bn, net Income $17.6bn, total assets $119.12bn, total equity $18.86bn.

In terms of digitized solutions in food traceability arena, IBM puts forward the following cloud based

product: “Smart Cloud” that offers full traceability solution from farm to fork. The IBM food

traceability framework improves the food supply chain, as each asset is assigned a unique

identifier. This could be a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag assigned to an animal, a

barcode assigned to a package or an ID that represents the acre on which a crop was grown. The

product can then be scanned, sending data to the receiving service. The solution helps food supply

chain infrastructure become more interconnected by enabling better communication, allowing

routing messages, converting protocols and transforming data formats. In addition, IBM cloud

based food traceability network provides an intelligent management system, consisting of:

• IBM InfoSphere Traceability Server—maintains product relationships and movement

activity across the food supply chain.

• IBM WebSphere Sensor Events—provides a sensor/device interface, data capture, event

processing and application integration; filters data and correlates between disparate sensors to

derive higher order business events.

• IBM Cognos analytics and reporting software—delivers the business intelligence capability

to integrate data from multiple sources.

• WebSphere Portal—provides the user interface and dashboards that allow human data

entry if the technology-related capability is not available.
