Overview This document presents an overview of the integration of the Digital StoreFront® Web-to-Print storefront solution with the MicroPress® print production system.

The MicroPress integrates smoothly with Digital StoreFront by automating job ticket conversion, forwarding the job and the ticket to the appropriate queue, and reporting the status of job production to Digital StoreFront.

Integration Objectives • Enhance productivity for EFI customers who have both Digital StoreFront and the MicroPress installed.

• Provide an end-to-end solution (job submission through print production).

6 EFI Digital StoreFront | MicroPress Integration Guide

• Improve workflow efficiency by reducing manual data manipulation and input.

Integration Synopsis 1. Media catalogs for Digital StoreFront and the MicroPress can be synchronized.

2. Order data flows from Digital StoreFront to the MicroPress as a supported output device.

3. Production instructions are passed into the MicroPress job ticket.

4. Job status flows from the MicroPress to Digital StoreFront (where it is available in the Operator View).

Required Software Versions • Digital StoreFront 5.2 (or higher)

• MicroPress 7.0 or 8.0

Topics Covered in This Document 1. Set up the systems for integration:

a. Install the eProve module to enable integration with the MicroPress from the Site Configuration page in Digital StoreFront.

b. Create a MicroPress output folder in Digital StoreFront.

c. Create monitored “hot folders” in the MicroPress for Digital StoreFront jobs.

2. Synchronize the MicroPress and Digital StoreFront media catalog.

3. Manage custom features with pre-print/post-print options in Digital StoreFront and generate them as special instructions on separator page.

4. Understand the workflow.

In addition, an appendix shows the Digital StoreFront to MicroPress ticket mapping.

Set Up the Systems for Integration

Automated Printing with eProve Integrating Digital StoreFront and the MicroPress for automated printing can be done at the time of installation or manually at a later time by installing the eProve module on the MicroPress server. This module allows job information to be sent to the Digital StoreFront web site. Once the integration is complete, jobs can be uploaded through the Digital StoreFront system and flow through to the MicroPress. Jobs submitted to the Digital StoreFront (without custom features) for production on the MicroPress are automatically printed on the MicroPress without any operator intervention. Some, though not all, job properties will map to the MicroPress system. The job ticket features will apply to the job, and the ticket can be printed with the job.

If you need to change the MicroPress printer integrated with the system, please refer to “Setting up a Hot Folder in the MicroPress RIP” in the MicroPress User Guide to make the needed changes. This provides step-by-step instructions for connecting the new printer to the system.

To install eProve to enable MicroPress support on Digital StoreFront When you install eProve, the MicroPress can communicate production status to Digital StoreFront. Thus a status such as “Job Printed” is sent from the MicroPress to Digital StoreFront to alert the operator (in the Operator View) when a job is completed.

1. From the MicroPress system software, open Internet Explorer.

Digital StoreFront | 7

2. Navigate to the URL (web address) of your Digital StoreFront site and log in as an administrator.

3. Click the Administration tab and go to Site Settings.

4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see the MicroPress Support section:

5. Click Install Eprove to install the MicroPress eProve update module.

Set Up the MicroPress as an Output Device for Digital StoreFront An output device is an end point for a job, and can be a printer or copier, or a hot folder monitored by MicroPress. Output devices are managed on the Print Shops page in Digital StoreFront because each output device is linked to a specific print shop.

Determine a path to the output device

When setting up an output device, you must specify a path to a folder that is accessible from your Web server. The system will create a folder here for storing copies of files associated with jobs. If an EFI product such as the MicroPress is set to monitor the specified folder, it will pick up the job from this folder.

Non-Remote Print Center (RPC): Use C:\inetpub\wwwroot\DSF\dsffiles\output\. If RPC is enabled, the network IP addresses or file system folders refer to the print center network and the RPC host server file system, not the ASP server.

Set up a MicroPress output device

1. In Digital StoreFront, go to Administration > Print Shops.

2. Click the name of the print shop to which you want to add an output device.

3. In the Default Output Device field, click Manage Output Devices. The Print Shop Outputs page opens.

4. Click New output.

5. In the Description field, enter a descriptive name for the output device.

6. Select EFI MicroPress as the type of device.

7. In the Device Directory field, enter a valid path that can be read by the Web server used with the system. EFI recommends that you create this folder as a subfolder of the system installation folder for the system.

• An example of a valid path is C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DSF. The system will create this folder in the designated location. The folder is used to store copies of files.

• The MicroPress will monitor this folder (which you will set up in the following section), “read” the job ticket, and process the file appropriately.

8. Click Save to return to the Print Shops page.

If this MicroPress device is the default output device for the location, select the device from the Default Device Output list. If the location should not have a default device assigned, make sure that Unassigned is displayed in the Default Device Output field.

Set Up a Hot Folder in the MicroPress RIP A “hot folder” (also called a watch directory or spool folder) is a folder on your local drive or network into which Digital StoreFront can drop PDF files to be automatically processed by the MicroPress RIP. The MicroPress RIP will continually poll the hot folder (at intervals you specify) and process the files it finds. You can use this feature in conjunction with multiple setups to allow polling of several folders, each having a

8 EFI Digital StoreFront | MicroPress Integration Guide

different associated page setup. The “page setup” corresponds to an output printer configured in the MicroPress workflow.

To set up a hot folder in the MicroPress RIP 1. In the MicroPress RIP, select MP-RIP > Input Controller... from the main menu.

2. Click New in the Input Controller window to open the Input Channel Edit window.

3. Enter a name for your new hot folder in the Name field.

4. In the Type field, select Spool Folder.

5. In the Page Setup field, select Page Setup for the printer from which you intend to receive the file.

6. Select the Enable check box to enable the input channel.

Digital StoreFront | 9

7. Click Configure to open the Spool Folder Configuration dialog.

8. In the Spool Folder field, enter the path to the hot folder, or click Spool Folder to select the folder.

9. Set the remaining options in the Spool Folder Configuration window to suit the needs of your organization (for detailed descriptions of each field in the window, consult the MicroPress Reference Manual that ships with the MicroPress system).

10. Click OK.

Synchronize the Digital StoreFront and MicroPress Media Catalogs

Importing Media from Digital StoreFront to the MicroPress 1. On the MicroPress server, start the PrintStation Manager (PSM).

2. Select Tools > Media Manager from the PSM main menu to open the MicroPress Media Catalog.

3. Select Edit > Import media from DSF… from the Media Catalog main menu.

4. In the Choose DSF Web Server and Facility window:

• DSF web application home URL: Enter the URL of your Digital StoreFront site (the address must end with a forward slash: /)

• DSF site key: Locate the Digital StoreFront site key by logging into Digital StoreFront as an administrator and going to Administration > Site Settings > About tab, writing down the Site Key Administration value, and then entering it in the DSF site key field.

• Facility name: Select the print shop from which you want to import media.

5. Click OK to import the catalog.

All imported media will be highlighted in the Media Display Name column of the Media Catalog.

Digital StoreFront | 11

Exporting Media from the MicroPress to Digital StoreFront:

Only media with unique names are exported from Digital StoreFront. Because Digital StoreFront introduces new media (many having the same name), some of the built-in media do not export to external systems. As part of the setup process, simply provide unique media names for new media including those that differ only by size. But if you want to use the sample media and you wish to use MicroPress media catalog integration capabilities, use the Language Management page in Digital StoreFront to rename the standard media so the names are unique. (Using the Media Management page to change the names is not sufficient.)

Notes on Media in Digital StoreFront

Custom media types and custom colors can be represented in JDF.

The colors work by using a standard JDF color name, which is required. The media type requires a JDF name that must conform to the JDF naming conventions. The naming conventions are complex, but the web site checks for conformance with the JDF conventions and provides guidance on choosing a name. In Digital StoreFront, the custom media types and colors are accepted and do not cause errors, but the ticket is limited to JDF 1.1 names only. (This is because the other systems to which Digital StoreFront connects were designed to accept only the JDF 1.1 names.)

Only these media types are supported for the non-JDF and non-PrintSmith tickets. All other media types will be represented in the XML as Paper.

Digital StoreFront | 13

Handle Custom Print Services in Digital StoreFront Custom print services and some standard print services do not map to the MicroPress and must be manually handled. On the MicroPress, custom jobs are written out as special instructions on the job separator page. You can specify the following actions when adding or editing a print service in Digital StoreFront:

• Requires Preprint Action—Check this box if the feature requires preprint action on the part of an operator at the print shop (such as placing custom paper in the printer). On a MicroPress, this may place a job on hold until an operator performs the action manually.

• Requires Postprint Action—Check this box if the feature requires postprint action on the part of an operator at the print shop (such as glue-binding a document). On a MicroPress, these appear as special instructions on the job separator page.

Digital StoreFront Integration Workflow

Integration Setup Process The Digital StoreFront administrator sets up Digital StoreFront and the MicroPress for integrated production.

On the Digital StoreFront side 1. As the administrator, set up MicroPress as an output device (perhaps as the default output device) and

specify a folder in the Device Directory field that will serve as a hot folder for MicroPress to monitor for jobs.

2. Create one output device in Digital StoreFront for color jobs and another for black-and-white jobs.

On the MicroPress side 1. Install eProve (which enables MicroPress to talk to Digital StoreFront).

2. In the MicroPress RIP: Create two new “spool folders” (hot folders)—one for color jobs from Digital StoreFront and another for black-and-white jobs from Digital StoreFront. These are the hot folders for the MicroPress output device created in Digital StoreFront.

3. In the PrintStation Manager (PSM): Synchronize the Digital StoreFront and MicroPress media catalogs by importing and exporting media to and from Digital StoreFront.

Manage media in both Digital StoreFront and MicroPress if you plan to output to both MicroPress and non-MicroPress output devices; manage media in MicroPress alone if you plan to output exclusively to MicroPress devices.

Production Process 1. Customer submits a file and specifies print and finishing options. Customer pays for the order and checks out

using the shopping cart.

2. The job/order is now in Digital StoreFront and can be viewed in the Operator View.

3. The print shop operator generates a production ticket for the job and then prints the job.

4. The job files are now placed in the hot folder.

5. The MicroPress picks up the job and makes it available in the PSM. The print shop operator can search for the job in PSM by file name (i.e., the actual name of the file submitted to Digital StoreFront).

6. The MicroPress ticket is mapped from the Digital StoreFront ticket, and is a print-formatted ticket. It contains the order and document numbers assigned by Digital StoreFront. The Job Information page in PSM has the ticket information, including print and finishing options, billing and pricing information, shipping preferences, etc. Some custom print services in the Digital StoreFront may not map to the MicroPress or be supported on the output device.

14 EFI Digital StoreFront | MicroPress Integration Guide

7. Print shop operator checks the job information in the PSM to ensure the MicroPress supports all print and finishing options the user has defined in Digital StoreFront. The operator manually configures attributes and options that did not automatically map from Digital StoreFront to the MicroPress. The pre- and post-print actions from Digital StoreFront (e.g., load 80 lb. pink paper in destination tray) are displayed in the Special Handling window in the PSM.

8. MicroPress returns a Printed status to the Digital StoreFront Operator View.

Appendix: Digital StoreFront to MicroPress Ticket Mapping The table in this appendix lists the Digital StoreFront print services that map to the MicroPress job ticket. They are sorted by Category Name, and then by Main Description and Secondary Description. The Mapped column indicates if an item is mapped directly to the MicroPress.

MicroPress does not read (nor does Digital StoreFront provide) data for special pages except as special instructions.
