As the Falcons are just over halfway through the sea-son and tied atop the NACC standings, head coach Stacey Brunner-Jones sat down and spoke with with CUWFalcons.com to answer a few questions head-ing into today’s contest against Rockford.

Q: Entering today’s game against Rockford the Falcons are tied for first atop the NACC stand-ings. Is this a good place to be at this moment?A: Defenitely, whenever you are in first place it is a good position to be in. I think the two loss-es to Benedictine and MSOE were important for us. If you use losses to help you and to learn from them, they can be beneficial. I thnk we are in a good place and there are a lot of good teams in our league.

Q: With so many games remaining in the NACC portion of the schedule, does the pressure start to intensify because you are in first and people are taking notice?A: I don’t think so. We don’t feel any more pressure than we normally do. As a coaching staff we don’t put any more pressure on our team and we are kind of a boring team because we do the same things often; watching the same amount of film, scout the same for each team and taking it one game at a time. The only distraction right now is people talking about CIT, but I think we do a very good job of taking it one day at a time.

Q: Saturday is alumni day, how important are they to the program?A: It is my favorite game of the season. To have my former players come back and hear them cheer-ing and saying the things I would say from behind the bench is fun. It is comforting and I love seeing them. It is amazing to see how successful they are now and, more importantly, they get to talk to the team about how important CUW women’s basket-ball is to them. I think it is a really great day and really important.

Q: The Falcons are ranked 27th nationally in scoring defense and first in the NACC, but can this defense improve?A: Defenitely. I think attention to detail is huge depending on who you are playing. Knowing the scouting report and the individual characteristics is key. So yes, we can improve on defense.

Q: Recently you made a chance in the starting lineup, inserting Baylee Barker and Katelyn Sewall. What was the reason behind the change?A: Baylee and Katelyn are new to the starting lineup this season and we just needed to change some things up. After we lost I think we neeed-ed to use that as a learning experience and just changing some things was important. As a coach I need make everyone hungry for their position and want to improve. The competition during practice is important and sometimes we get com-placent because things are the same, and some-times that doesn’t work. Obviously Baylee is a very good shooter and Katelyn has made some shots lately, and we hope that continues.

Q: Your team has struggled at the free throw line this season, but have improved recently. How important is it to shoot better at the free throw line, especially in the final moments when you are trying to win or seal the victory?A: At the end of the game you hope you have your best free throw shooters on the floor, but as a whole, yes, it’s a frustrating struggle we have had all season. As a coach, we have to look at it from different angles. You don’t want to stress about it too much or focus on it too much, but there is a time when you have to. The players know when they aren’t shooting well. We do what every coach does; make them run or do pushups, show it on film and keep track of percentages. I think the players get it and understand what the big picture is -- if you want to be a championship team you have to make free throws.
