Let’s Get Started . . .

#1. Frame your shots

This is OK, but add visual interest by

framing

Yeah, that’s better

#2. Look for leading lines

Leading lines should draw the

viewer’s eyes into the image

And this creates visual interest and gives perspective

#3. Use the Rule of Thirds

Place the visual point, or points, of interest at the intersections of thirds to create a non-centered shot

#4. Stop the action

Nice, but it doesn’t match their personalities. Select the stop action feature on your camera and get them to do this …

That’s more like it

#5. Get Close to your subjectThe single greatest thing you can do to improve your shots is to move closer

#7. Turn the flash onYou may need to override the flash setting and turn it on in low lighting to get the best shot…

This was taken at dusk in Gettysburg. The image was NOT what I was seeing at this moment. The flash did not fire.

This was literally 5 seconds later after I turned the flash on. This is what I saw.

#8. Turn the flash offSometimes the automatic flash will fire when you don’t want it to fire. Turn it off.

Low lighting is a great effect and can create the right mood for the shot.

But be careful. You will need to use a tripod or be very still

as the shutter stays open longer.
