National Science Digital Library
NSDL is an NSF program, begun in 2004, aiming to provide access to online materials in the STEM disciplines.
Origins of NSDL Program
• Support dissemination of NSF materials created with NSF grant support
• Followed a series of solicitations for a computer-science based program on digital library creation and use.
History of NSDL
2000
• First round of solicitations
• Original funding for MathDL
• Several projects had competing Core Integration projects
2001
• One Core Integration project is selected: Cornell, UCAR, Columbia
2003
• Eisenhower National Clearinghouse’s Middle School Portal designated as an example of a Pathway

MathDLMAA’s Pathway Within NSDL
Today’s MathDL emerges from the combination of Math Gateway and the old MathDL to form the new Mathematical Association of America’s Pathway Project within NSDL.
The MathDL began as a collection project within NSDL, first funded in 2000.

Goals of MathDL
• To provide an outlet to the MAA community for exemplary online articles and online learning materials in mathematics.
• To promote the MAA in general. (This is a major goal of the MAA Writing Awards site.)
• To encourage and support the creation of online learning materials in mathematics. (For example, this is what The Flash Forum does.)
• To establish and maintain a role for the MAA in the National Science Digital Library. (That is what the current NSF grant says that we do.)
• To promote the use of the history of mathematics in the teaching of mathematics. (This comes with Convergence.)
• To support and publicize the online efforts of MAA members and related projects in providing online services and content. (This reflects the efforts to support the MathDL partners.)
