Supporting local charities and social enterprises to diversify their income through online fundraising.
Who am I?
● I was the Telethon Manager for SoccerAid 2012 - a live football match featuring celebrities that raised £4 million for UNICEF
● After that I worked for The National Archives on data protection
● I’ve spent the last three years helping 150 Localgiving members in Bath, Bristol, Frome and South Gloucestershire with their fundraising
What is Localgiving?
● Membership network and fundraising platform for local charities, CIC’s and community groups.
● Set up in 2009 as a registered UK charity
● Only online giving platform that allows unregistered charities, CIC’s and community groups to benefit from Gift Aid
● Leading local charity match funding platform
Sustainability
● Over the next 12 months, 83% of local voluntary sector groups in the South West expect to see increased demand for their services
● Only 10% of groups feel they are sufficiently resourced to meet this demand
● 58% of groups believe generating income and achieving financial sustainability is the most pressing issue over the next 12 months

Realistic crowdfunding targets
● e.g. Through this appeal, we want to raise: £5,000
● We think the conversion rate of those exposed to the appeal would be 5% and they will give £10 each on average.
● Meaning that we need to get: Target / Average Gift (5,000 / 10) = 500 donations
● This means we need to generate: Target Number of Donations / Conversion Rate (500 / 0.05) = 10,000 views of our appeal.
Realistic direct debit targets
● e.g. we want to generate: £100 a month via Direct Debits
● We think the conversion rate of those exposed to the appeal would be 20% and they will give £10 each on average per month.
● Meaning that we need to get: Target / Average Gift (100 / 10) = 10 donors
● This means we need to generate: Target Number of Donations / Conversion Rate (10 / 0.20) = 50 individual views
● Need to raise £10,000 to stage this years festival
● No database
● Always relied on cheques from local businesses and bucket collections
● Active on social media
1. Never done any online fundraising
Redfest Bristol CIC - £9,034 raised via 144 backers
● General public are most common income source for groups.
● 62% groups cited generating these donations as a current financial concern.
● Lack of skills and engagement with new trends create an area of opportunity.
Public donations can play a key role
● Need to raise £2,000 to pay for student mental health counselling
● Communty radio station which is CIC
● Seen as a business not a charity
● Large army of young volunteers
2. Identity problem
Frome FM - £2,876 raised & 96 backers
Frome FM - local press still have a role to play
● Trends are not positive and concerns around unrestricted income mean solutions are not easy to find.
● Anecdotally we do not believe these are being used for anything other than dealing with deficits.
Building and maintaining reserves a growing concern
● Established for 90 years
● Older supporter base
● Reliant on event fundraising
● Never tried crowdfunding
3. What’s the need?
Young Bristol - £90,000 raised in total
Young Bristol - social media plan
● Grants and contracts remain a key income stream.
● Concerns over increased competition and restricted nature of funding.
● Findings are consistent with previous years.
Income diversity is required
● 50 members paying small amounts each year
● Have to claim Gift Aid manually
● Never fundraise
● Need some regular income to pay for volunteer expenses
4. Want to manage membership subscriptions with less admin
Friends of Bathampton Meadows Riverside - 12 direct debits = £60 p/m
Organisations with annual incomes between £250-500k are a particular concern over the next 12 months:
● 24% are pessimistic about their ability to survive.
● 45% are forecasting their income will decrease.

Start with a clear idea of what you need
● Agree what your priorities are and explain your ‘business case’ - even if it is a free tool○ Why is a tool needed? ○ What challenges will the tool help you to overcome?
● Define what you need the tool to do.○ What core features does the tool need○ What features are a ‘nice to have’○ Does the tool need to integrate with any other tools?
● Be clear on responsibilities and understand what training your staff will need to feel confident using a new tool
